Signed to other '25 MI QB Bryce Underwood

Portnoy basically explained how the entire situation went down. He was working with UM and other boosters on NIL stuff and his UM contact told him Jolin Ellison wanted to talk to him. He didn't know who that was and kind of blew it off until they told him it was Larry Ellison's wife. He then did a meeting with both Larry and Jolin (who is a UM grad) and she told him they wanted to do whatever it took not to go back to the Rich Rod and Brady Hoke days so she and Larry were going to pay whatever it took to get Underwood.

Apparently Portnoy didn't put up any of his own money for Underwood, but it running a big Barstool merch campaign with 100% of proceeds going to Underwood.

Edit: Oh and Tom Brady has a personal conversation with Underwood about Michigan.

I mean, good for the kid to get what he can, but a company like Barstool running a merch campaign based on the contingency that he goes to a certain school feels slimy to me.

I guess it's no different than an Omaha tractor dealership, but it feels grosser.

I don't get it. An actual NIL deal feel slimy to you, but the second richest person in the world throwing the change in his couch cushions at an 18 year old kid because his wife went to Michigan is all good?

Well, not to get too far in the weeds, but hell yes what Ellison did is slimy and it's why NIL needs to be reined in.

I get that what Barstool is doing is actual NIL, but remember that the original idea behind NIL was that the guys that college sports were making money off of should get a slice of the pie. A big ass company selling merchandise for a guy under the condition that he goes to a certain school is a perversion of that idea. But like I said, it's no different than a guy signing an NIL deal with a local business under the condition that he stays there.

agree, what's the difference between barstool handling a merchandise deal as opposed to a local sporting goods store? It's simply a mercahndise deal and fortunately for Michigan they have one of the biggest one in their pocket.

The only connection our major benefactor has to CU is Coach Prime. Not sure that's any better.
Right. None of this would matter in the slightest if we could just fast forward to when there's one governing body over all of P4 or whatever "power league" is created, with a true CBA in place, centralized media deals, salary cap, etc. But, because this is the slowest moving sport of all time with all entities pulling in different directions, we are stuck with this pay for play world that relies solely on which program can get the most wealthy people to pony up their money to pay for players with zero monetary ROI.
