Andre (Edit: LEAVING FOR NBA)

Dre is at the Draft Combine, up as we speak. "Awkward release." He doesn't look comfortable or confident, he missed every 3 in that drill.

Well if you didn't say his name and described his game he would sound most like a big guard or small forward.

He doesn't box out well, but gets rebounds with his athleticism and instinct, has no legitimate post moves, plays D best on the perimeter where he can poke the ball away or interfere with passing lanes. He's trying to improve his 3 point shot and is listed at 6-7 210.

Comparison:
Listed height, weight and position.

Jordan Hamilton: 6-7, 220 (SF)
Rip Hamilton: 6-7, 193 (SG)
Jimmy Butler: 6-7, 220 (SF)
Kyle Korver: 6-7, 212 (SF)
Kobe: 6-6, 205 (SG)
Andre Iguodala: 6-6, 207 (SG)
Paul Pierce: 6-7, 235 (SF)
Metta World Peace: 6-7, 270 (SF)

Not going to even pretend like he is as good but the guy on this list who a team would hope he would become like is Iguadala who is another player who is very limited offensively but an impact defender. Iguodala gets listed as a SG but routinely ends up defending the opponents 2 or 3 depending on who is the biggest threat. He can also slide over and cover some 4s as well as occasionally match up with 1s.

Dre is going to be smaller than virtually every 4 in the NBA and will be smaller than most 3s. In college he has done well against a number of guys who are bigger than he is but the league is a big step up.

Iguodala has also over time developed a limited but much more effective offensive game than Dre has. I can see a team drafting him hoping that he can develop into something similar to Iguodala but he has a long way to go to get there.

Yeah, the ESPNU crew couldn't have been less impressed with Andre's chances in the NBA. Even his greatest strength arguably, rebounding, was something that they had doubts would translate due to his lack of size.

In all fairness, they and other NBA analysts don't expect a first round pick out of all of the people in the PF group at the combine.

They don't know what they are talking about - It's generally accepted that rebounding translates between college and the NBA better than any other statistic.

Andre is a bit of a special case though being as small as he is. Plus he doesn't box out.

I don't see how that would make him a special case in a negative way. It's not like there was a type of player or team he struggled to rebound against in college.

It's said he met with Detroit and Orlando. Detroit has pick #38 (early second round) and Orlando has #51 (mid-late 2nd round). Detroit seems to have had success with guys his size and being defensive minded - Tayshaun Prince and Dennis Rodman come to mind.

Detroit is my team, so that would make me ecstatic, and he'd be a good fit there given his style of play.

Detroit would be a good fit for Andre because they only have 10 players under contract for next year. Better chance he can stick for a year or two at least.

Dre's measureables at the combine:

NameHeight w/o ShoesHeight with ShoesWt.WingspanReachBody FatHand LengthHand Width
Andre Roberson6' 6.25''6' 7''205.86' 11''8' 8.5''7.18.759.5

Dre has a great wingspan, but little size or good height.

NBA loves the measurables just like the NFL for the 1st rounders, but Dre isn't a 1st rounder. I still think a team will take a chance on Dre somewhere in the mid to late 2nd round for his defense, and he will be a D leaguer next year and maybe get some minutes off the bench in blowouts in the NBA. I hope he can develop his offensive game, but it will take years to get even to a mediocre level.

Due to his offensive limitations, he was never going to be a 1st round NBA prospect.

Great college player no doubt, but the NBA is tough a for a undersized PF with no size or strength.

I really hope he makes it because he can be a great defensive specialist in the NBA.

I don't think the height is much of a concern. There are plenty of players that have made their way to the NBA that are undersized at their position. It will keep him from getting drafted in the 1st, but no reason he can't stick if he improves somewhat on the offensive end of the court.

That's the big issue. Really has no post moves to speak of, or a consistent jump shot.

True. But the first part of the paragraph sums up why they talked themselves into going this year.
"The power forward group at the combine was hardly overwhelming...."

The problem is that he's not a power forward.

I'm afraid Andre passed up an unbelievable life experience for a D League season. I hope he at least goes over seas to make some good money.

Some of you folks need to get over it. Dre has been one of the greatest Buffs to ever don a CU uniform, and this constant harping on his decision is ridiculous.

His combine performance is kinda irrelevant. As is his draft status since he won't be a 1st rounder. It'll come down to his summer league performance in Vegas. If he plays like the Dre we know, he'll sign an NBA contract. That's where 2nd rounders/undrafted free agents get their chance to showcase skills.

It's a CU sports website, designed for people to post opinions. Not all are going to be positive....

Thank you! Dre gave everything he could for three years, then made the decision he and his family felt was best. It's easy to throw stones from a distance, but I can't fault him at all for what he did. Besides, I find it hard to believe that all of these posters criticising him for leaving early would have passed up even a 50-50 chance at leaving school after their junior year for a 500k per year job for the chance to have their senior year of college paid for.

And not all will agree with you. He will earn some money next year no matter what, he will improve, and if he is good enough he'll be successful in the NBA. No different than if he stayed.

Which is what I'd expect on an internet sports forum... Anyway, you speak the truth. I just tend to think his senior year would've been extremely valuable (in a number of ways), and more valuable than a D league season. Seems like Coach Boyle felt that way also.
