Big12 Considering 1 Billion From Private Equity Investment Firm

Community note: The "Big XII" has only been around since 1994.

the allstate conference is nearly as bad as the walmart conference of the truck stop conference or the flyover conference and so forth.

next step the team uniforms will look like nascar.

i am in hell. not only are we relegated to the junior league but we get to lean into the madness.

I hate this. I don’t know exactly why I hate this, but I’m certain I do, in fact, hate this.
We would be trapped
We are the biggest brand now in the Big allstate buckys 12
This is dumb, and will likely lose us Prime
Everyone else besides CU, KU, and Utah should love it.
We have the wealthiest African American in Denver and he is supporting Prime and the program.
There is a better and more creative deal to be had for us and we are more likely a P2 candidate

I’ll treat you with respect because you’re cool and the way the world works you’ll probably end up owning the company I work for someday.

I will not treat the people that cause us to play in the Allstate 12 Conference with respect.

THERES NOT EVEN TWELVE ****ING TEAMS YOU DIPSHITS
I don't treat George Kliavkoff, Larry Scott, and the university presidents in the former Pac 12 with respect either.

$30-50m total works out to a max of $3.125m per. I'm not doing something this silly for that little money.

Do the private equity thing and call it a day.

the biggest question is how would this move help to narrow the gap between the b12 and the sec/b10. both now and in the next round...

it is probably a good move from the standpoint of the b12 but i am far less sure about it for CU.

the price of the money is going to be quite high and very restrictive.

a "good" example of PE helping in sports is guggenheim partners buying the Dodgers. basically, it allowed them to take a longer term view because cash reserves are no longer an issue. you can make 1.4B in contract bets in a single off season. i am a bit skeptical that a similar benefit accrues to the b12. how do they make the cash infusion work to build value?

what a ****ing world.
Of course you somehow found a way to rope the Blew in this discussion.

a reference to the model franchise in all pro sports for the modern economic circumstances? why yes of course i did.

suck it rangers fan.

Can you help clarify your post, you are for or against PE?
We should get ourselves trapped in the Allstate League?
We are more valuable now than any other school in the league except Kansas and Utah because all 3 of us bring the next 3 contiguous states full markets to bear
PE has ran out of Shopping Malls, Car Washes, and other **** to run into the ground, so why not go **** up sports

I hate this. I don’t know exactly why I hate this, but I’m certain I do, in fact, hate this.

Whenever I told my mother I hated something, she told me that something hated me more. So take it in stride since that thing hates you more.

As for this very topic, conference names no longer have the meaning they once had so just sell the naming rights to the conferences.

I like the idea of the Big 12 being the Dr. Pepper Conference. Just need to add 7 ACC schools to match the 23 flavors of Dr. Pepper.

They didn't "need" to add OU/ UT/ USC/ UO etc. either. They were already making great money. If there's a lot of cash to be made in favorable terms to them, they'd absolutely explore it.
If they need money (and they don’t), Just take out a loan. There is zero need for the p2 to do anything with PE.

Yormark is trying to look good and creative and throwing around Dollar Bills, but what he is trying to do is get his teams locked up with another method other than GOR or whatever will likely be thrown out by the courts.

If we take this money, we are on the hook, and will need to buy our way back out of it.

When CU has 9,000,000 viewers for the Nebraska Game or the CSU game or just about half our games, and Texas Tech or West Virginia have 600,000, this type of money is not a good thing for us

Plus, how do we not lock up Prime and get ourselves to the Mountaintop over the next 1-3 years?

I do not trust Rick George to be honest

PE money
Prime's Extension or Creative Contracting
Everything is just so sloppy and clunky

If RG got ritually pantsed by mere agents of prospective HC's, I shudder to think what the flesh eating sharks of PE would do. I think Conference Commissioners might fare only a little better in that game.

Need a team of folks like Bloom and SMAC to save us. Shoot, I would love to have Wilhite in on this stuff
Would not do this PE thing in a million years, we have a different situation, and I bet you Utah and Kansas feel the same way.
The other schools are not in the same boat, neither is Louisville or Miami or anyone at the top of the ACC that may or may not be in on the next moves
PE is for G5 or PAC12 or schools that have a very shaky future and would roll the dice

I don't have an issue with conference naming rights as a new revenue stream. I think it's smart.

Could get interesting with conflicts, though. What happens if United Airlines paid CU for naming rights to the Keg and Delta sponsored the conference & put its logo on the court?

Explain how Conferences are helpful these days?
The NFL is a single monolithic entity and the "Franchises" stand up on their own, because they are the value.
Conferences mean unequal operations
Such a useless exercise for sports beyond regional Olympic Sports

I think NASCAR has models for that. I definitely remember a Budweiser car running in the Busch Series (now Xfinity Series), Jeff Gordon drove a Pepsi sponsored car in the Coca Cola 600, races sponsored by GM have Ford's and Toyotas in the lineup (and sometimes in the winner's circle), etc...

Look at who is scrambling to make all these moves

NCAA - Idiots
CONFERENCES (Conference Commissioners) - Idiots
TV and MEDIA - Idiots

Those who should be in control

PROGRAMS (With a good leadership team)
PLAYERS (With a Union)
NEW COLLECTIVE LEAGUE (Ran by the programs without Middle Men like Conference Commissioners, but it may need a League Czar)
ALUMS/FANS (We speak with our viewership and merchandise, etc, but maybe there needs to be even more connection)

This is why stupid things are being done or discussed or pursued

Agree that this isn't a new or unique problem.

But, um, Budweiser and Busch are brands from the same company.

Well if they are taking PE money as others have stated it's to raise the valuation for the next media rights. So when you take capital you have a specific investment thesis on how you are going to utilize it for maximum return. It isn't, I hope, going into general funds.

My pitch deck is: what drives eye balls? Winning and dominating, and markee players. What's changed in the market creating opportunity? Paying players. How are many markets won? By being the first to maximally capitalize on changing market conditions. Action plan: How do you dominate quickly? Spend $1B 100% on player acquisition, and do it quickly. Blow the market up, dominate , then redo your media rights.

I'll take my cut in Bitcoin please.

I'm struggling to find serious flaw with this.
