Bowl Games Thread

Sun bowl can't be happy. Stanford can't be happy. I'd kick him off the team (as if it would matter)

It's a team sport until it isn't? How about the seniors that aren't getting drafted? This is their last game and the best player quits.

How does this help his draft status? If I was a GM this could be enough to take him off the board.

Yep. I don't trust him to be a warrior for my team. I don't trust him to be a professional.

I see that side of it, but I'm old school with this. You're on a team. You have a game. If you're physically able, you play.

Agree with this

He has a team full of guys who busted their a**es to make him look good and to win games. Him bailing out on them for the bowl game stinks of selfishness.

Do you feel the same about leonard fournette, the UW Dlineman and several other players who left school during the season to prep for the draft as well?

I'm with nik and Mtn. here, complete BS move. It simply reinforces the notion that wherever they are, the McCaffreys are all about the McCaffreys. Personally, I wouldn't want a teammate like that.

If you were in the League, would you claim a phantom injury and sit out to protect your body once you'd reached whatever performance bonuses you had in your contract? Or does your team winning matter to you?
The post season matters in the NFL. Guys want to win a Super Bowl. Aside from the CFP, nobody gives a **** about college postseason. Especially the Sun Bowl.

 Pay attention. McCaffrey isn't the first or only person to make his decision

I don't like it at all. It's setting a bad example imho. Now more guys will do it, wait and see. I'm kinda more old school I guess but I was always taught you represent yourself and your teammates. I understand the angle but it's simply something I couldn't do. To each their own.

Not being first doesn't make it right. If I'm a teammate I'm not impressed.

He is going to get drafted either way, wonder though if this makes a few GMs push him down the board a little bit.

One only has to look at the Jaylon Smith injury last year to understand Christian's decision. As fans we hate it. But for him, the stakes are high - even with a large insurance policy.

We are always told that bowl games are a reward for players. I have no problem with a guy who stands to lose millions foregoing that reward. Stanford isn't exactly preparing a Sun Bowl banner to hang if they win. C Mac already made them a bucket of money - time for him to get rewarded.

I did a quick perusal of 3 articles on line about McCaffrey's decision. They all went along the lines of "I get it, the Sun Bowl is just an exhibition game anyways."

This mentality, if it permeates widely, will be the downfall of the FBS and hasten the roll out of a 32 or 64 game playoff. If the players aren't taking it seriously, it won't be long before the fans don't, either.

Before you say "There could never be a 64 team playoff!" keep in mind the 2016-17 bowl season has 41 games and 82 teams participating in them.

Yes. But with Fournette I understand it more since he's been injured all season.

Yep. If this is the attitude, then it's time for the Power Conference teams to split from the G5 teams and have a 16-team playoff.

Wtf? McCaffery won't play?? I'd be insulted if I was his teammate. If I'm in the NFL I wonder if he will give up on my team or go even when he shouldn't.

McCaffrey was injured this year as well and he has been the most heavily utilized player in college the last 2 years by a wide margin. Not sure why you're giving a pass to Fournette and not him.

How about if I'm an NFL team that is 7-6 and barely hanging on to hope for a playoff berth. Does McCaffrey give me his all considering that he is going to be a free-agent in the off-season or does he shut it down and look for the next contract?

Character matters and actions prove character.

All within 3 weeks of each other. We going to start playing 2 games a weekend?

Glad to see people are up in arms about top flight players skipping bowl games to solidify their financial future, but don't bat an eyelash when coaches bail on their teams before bowl games for more $$

Different issue but yes I don't like it when coaches bail on their teams either.

Again, the NFL postseason matters. College does not. It's a non-issue.

Responsibility to your team matters. It is an issue.

A bunch of those guys will never play another football game in their lives. Finishing their career with a win matters, even if it is in a "meaningless" bowl game.

NFL players are all about the business of football. They understand the risks with playing. That's why the CBA is structured the way it is. There would be no malice against McCaffery in the NFL locker room, but there might be some ribbing.

You don't really believe what you are saying here.

Meaningless to the players that will get drafted. But I guess that is what this is about. Screw the scrubs!

So let me get this straight... Elite players who stand to make millions of dollars owe it their less talented teammates to play even if it comes with some serious risk? Since when has this mentality been the case in any part of American society?
