Can you win consistently in Boulder?

There’s a lot of talk on this board about RG needing to find a coach who can win P12 championships ... RG says it himself. That is a total joke. We have to start facing facts in Buffland. At best, we are the Iowa State of the Pac 12. (Some might say more like the Kansas.) A team that will occasionally have a good run in a down year for the league and get close (like 2016). But more likely, this program’s ceiling is about 7-5 or 8-4. And most years we’ll wallow in the 3-9 to 5-7 area. Why is that?

Support ... I’ve always said, if Boulder was 30 minutes further from Denver, we’d draw 10k a game at most. Not enough people at CU care about football ... least of which is the administration. That’s a fact. Boulder is a GREAT college town, but first and foremost an ultra progressive crunchy outdoor adventure town - meaning it is simply not a supportive environment for conventional sports. Why would any top-tier coach come here, knowing that (and its widely known in football circles)? People talking about Holgerson coming are completely delusional.

When I hear RG talk about the beauty of Folsom and Boulder as being factors in drawing players and coaches, I just laugh. I love those things ... but most football people don’t give a **** about that stuff. That might draw skiers, lacrosse and cross country and soccer players here, but not football coaches and players. All most football players see is a lilly white hippie town that doesn't give a **** about football.

Convince me I'm wrong.

That's my point ... that doesn't matter. We'll never get the type of coach that can overcome those obstacles. There are those coaches out there ... but why would they come here?

The 90s are gone and they're never coming back. CU is about 18 years too late to make the changes that were needed. College football has passed CU by.

CU is a place you can win big at, but you need an SEC level buy in from the administration and locals. I for one hate how much people down there care about sports, but that's what it's going to take to win here. Just let the head coach do his job with complete impunity.

We aren't going to ever be Ohio State or Bama but CU can do what Washington is doing now. We need the right people in charge to do it but it can be done in Boulder.

Coming to terms with the fact that we've had one winning season in the last 11 years, and every coach we hire fails isn't "contempt for CU" it's a realization that this situation probably cant be fixed.

CU has historically been able to recruit Texas much better than UDub. Outside of the past few years the historical profile of the two programs have been very similar, and don't forget that it wasn't that long ago that Washington was 0-12.
 
With the right coach why can't CU be a consistent Pac-12 Champ contender? @seattlebuff

What is lacking? It was facilities, admin support, long term contracts, budget. Those things were fixed over the past several years, and we've had a coach who didn't recruit elite players. Why is that a permanent problem in your mind?

Contempt for CU? What ****ing joke! I love CU football and was exhilarated in 2016. I would have been stoked if we had managed to go 6-6 and get to a bowl. But I'm just pointing out the obvious here.

Washington packs out a 70,000 seat stadium and has the will, resources and fanbase to win.

I'm not saying we can;t win .... I'm saying we have adjust our expectations. The upgrades in facilities, contracts, etc certainly bring us to being able to compete for bowl eligibility. But championships? That's not happening without a top-tier coaching staff ... and I don't think we'll get one.
