For those coming down but unfamiliar:
- Generally the tailgating is good for families and the more tame amongst us. Cost for parking is built into your ticket, traffic flows more easily from the south gate but there are small lots by both gates where your group could rally if you need a point to meet up. its a giant field so if you're a flip flop wearer your feet get a little gritty. In my opinion the southeast section of the parking is generally the more fun section. You can work your way there from any of the 3 entry points. the parking staff are volunteers, not military so when they tell you to do something silly nod with a huge smile and then do whatever you were planning to do. There is no cover of any kind. if you want shade or protection from the possible rain that day then I'd bring an awning. If you've got kids with you there are usually some smaller things up near the east side of the stadium to do pre-game. Crowd usually starts to come in about 3 hours before game time. i've heard a lot of locals say they expect a larger crowd with this game and they may come 4 hours early.
- I know with certainty that if you get too rowdy the base police appear out of the ether. they're not bad to deal with and if you cut it out they're usually pretty cool but it is a federal installation so don't **** around too much.
- if you're not into the tailgating scene:
And to be clear for those of you triggered by the Springs...you've not set foot there unless you come in that south gate.
- Monument is 2 exits north of the north gate exit.
- Pikes Peak Brewery - good beer, nice outside area and usually a food truck or you can have **** delivered
- 300 Days of Shine - Retired vet goes legit finally and starts making legal moonshine. Small-ish tasting room, some outside seats near a very small park and usually a food truck
- La Casa Fiesta - locally owned very gringoed-up mexican food. great patio. get the silverado margarita.
- Black Forest Deli - center of town, great food, limited drink selection
- Up valley from Monument is an even smaller town, Palmer Lake. You can get there via i-25 or a better option is to come down 105 from Sedalia. much prettier drive. Palmer Lake makes most of it's cash from a small group of restaurants. think of it like Monument's Pearl Street...that isn't a good comparison but you'll see.
- 105 Social house - great drinks, good food and nice outdoor space. spendy
- Speedtrap - the coffee house from Friends but full of mountain folk
- La Rosa - more authentic Mexican food, slow service. take your time...it's palmer lake
- O'Malley's - dive bar. there's a grill inside to cook your own food or if the staff feels like it they will do it for you in the kitchen. Good burgers, love the wings, get the sidewinder fries, sit outside. There's a salad bar...don't.
- Rock house Icecream - if you've got kids with you it's a must. sit outside and tell the kids to try to get car to honk for them.
- Tthere's others.
For those of you with less Springs Hesitancy:
- Off northgate road there is Bourbon Brothers, over by the Bass Pro. go into the back Bourbon room if it's open.
- right next to bourbon brothers is Vaqueros. Again lots of tex in the mex but its got a great patio
- a little further south but still close is beast and brews. pour by the ounce beer selection, good food, great patio, spendy.
Much further south than that and you're in the thick of it.
ping with questions. I'll help how I can
Air Force fan here (hope that doesn’t trigger anyone YGTBSM). Here’s to a good game with no injuries. I also live in Monument and you hit all the close spots. I’m a lifetime member (older dude) at Pikes Peak Brewing Co and indeed a great local place. You can add the Brass Tap in the same complex as Bass Pro with over 30+ beers on tap and Don Tequila‘s Mexican is excellent in Monument and their Vallarta Margarita is top notch.
PAC Man it will be interesting to see how this unfolds with the line and the week one performance of both teams. Indeed everyone was holding their breath with Northern Iowa as they are a step up in FCS teams but truly was coming off an average year. We didn’t get much penetration on their O-line (avg 330#) with a pass rush throughout the game. But with that said we played very vanilla on both sides of the ball. On defense zero blitzes and played off receiver soft 8-10 yards. On offense really did not show anything on offense only what you would expect just a combination of two plays: 1) Option left/right with either the handoff to FB or QB keep or pitch to TB and 2)Quick pitch to FB/TB. Did throw in a few passes but that’s about it (3-6).Was going to not watch this one and then realized that I love option football and since I don't have cable TV, this would be a chance to watch AFA so I'll tune in this Saturday.
As someone who follows FCS football, I thought AFA's win over UNI was impressive given that UNI usually has good defenses at the FCS level even if the team speed isn't that great. I watched the highlights and even the #2 and #3 QBs led TD drives in that game so AFA played very well in that one. I'd be very concerned with how CU's defense responds after TCU ran over them in the 2H and the CU offense is still offensive.
Either it is going to be ugly or CU surprises us with a close & hard fought game. I'm leaning towards ugly in this case.
For those that don’t know the history of the end of the AF vs CU here is an interesting read. Beer cans and bottles thrown at AF fans, players, Air Force personnel in fall of 1973 playing in Boulder. Pretty ugly. I was a freshman at USAFA that fall. Next year at our place and all was ‘civil‘ but AF said they wouldn’t go to CU again. Pretty sad that people couldn’t just stay home if they didn’t want to watch that game in ‘73.
Take care all and safe travels down I25 if making the drive.

When the first Air Force-Colorado football game I covered as a sports columnist for the Rocky Mountain News occurred in 1974, I didn’t suspect the teams wouldn’t play again at
