CU Coaching & Support Staff Moves

Prime made two impressive coordination hires with Lewis and Kelly. But the rest of the hires are very underwhelming. Especially considering the now elevated status of the program and a large increase in the assistant coach pay pool.

“On paper” this is probably the worst group of position coaches we’ve had in recent years. Which is saying something considering how bad those recent years have been.

Kevin Mathis/Andre Hart: Only coaching experience prior to Jackson was as HS assistants. Appear to have mainly got the jobs because they’re long time friends of Prime.

Tim Brewster: Nice overall résumé. But he's 62 and considering he was coaching at Jackson there probably wasn’t much demand for him at this point in his career.

Dennis Thurmond: Same as above. Good résumé but is 66 and his last “legit” job was in 2016.

Bill O’Boyle: Another 60yo. Nice career at lower levels but this will be his first P5 job.

Nick Williams: Was a key recruiting assistant at big programs but this will be his first “on the field job.”

Vincent Dancy: Head coach of an awful fcs program. And résumé very thin prior to that. Not even sure how he got a head coaching job.

Rumored: Hagan back as RB coach. Yawn. Brett Bartolone as WR coach. Did a nice job as the Jackson OC last year but résumé is very thin prior to that.

Brewster is an elite recruiter, but otherwise fair.

I'm ok with OL because we need to get this offense set up asap. He's also been a part of legitimately great offenses with Lewis.

The rest: mostly TBD. dancy may not be on field. I don't think the positions are finalized yet, but you've raised good concerns..

Do you remember if the NCAA proposal passed to have unlimited football staff? Iirc, there was still a limit to how many guys could be on the road recruiting at a given time, but the staff could be as big as you want. Eliminating bogus titles like when Bama had Lane as OC while Sark was an "analyst."

Bartolone will not be WR coach, according to @#1 pick above. Hagan also has murmurings of moving off the field.

Also, I kind of agree, the position coaches let go have pretty good on-paper resume. However, we were 128th on offense and 130th on defense. Enough for me to say that anything could be better

Nope. The last few years of CFB have been fuzzy for some reason

Prime was very transparent about one of the reason he wanted to move up to P5, and that was to get some of his loyal assistants paid. He mentioned it on his most recent interview with Rob Jay at JSU that over the next couple years, the guys that have stuck with him for 20+ years coaching little league, HS and JSU are going to become millionaires.

This was a perceived "downside" of hiring Prime and it was discussed quite a bit here. However, Prime isn't dumb. He understands there are certain positions that don't require an elite position coach, can get by on hard work and being a good recruiter (RB, TE, WR, DL), and others that require more experience (QB, OL, DB and of course the coordinators). I also think it's why he is likely retaining a guy like Mike Zimmer to really help with the X's and O's aspect of things, in game adjustments, gameplanning, etc.

One thing that will likely be glossed over is the importance of using a tight managerial unit in a hostile takeover. He needs to place his supporters in key roles to dig out the rotten culture and a fully mercenary staff isn’t best suited for that.

I could see a year 1 staff primarily focused on cultural overhaul and establishing control with changes made in year 2 once the shock work has been done

Dennis Thurman is coming as well. I just don't know the title and it's not official yet

Sanford may not be a good OC, but he's a good guy. Hope he lands on his feet somewhere

I wish there was some kind of a place for him within CU athletics. He truly cared about the players. Wishing him well and that he ends up as a HC somewhere- he’d be good in that role.

Nope the NCAA currently has the limit set with 1 coach and 10 assistants who can work with the players. Staffs can be as big as the program is willing to pay but they will be analyst, directors of players and so on.
