CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

So you want CU left out to dry going forward because of politics?
I think every path other than a B1G or SEC invite is getting left out to dry in this new era of college football.

I don't think that playing in the Big 12 gets CU any closer to an invite in the next round than staying in the Pac.

And since I don't think it matters, other things matter to me. When I sell out, it's only when the opportunity is life changing.

The Big 12 feels like tying to rocks together to see if they float. Like the Kmart Sears merger.

I honestly don’t get this take Nik, because I am missing how going to the B12 is a sellout versus staying in the PAC. Not sure how ASU, UofA, Utah, WSU and others are better than the B12 schools in terms of what you value. They all ****ing suck for what you are looking for.

Versus Baylor and BYU?

Would depend on how it's structured. If it's earning more based on bowl and tourney money earned as well as for getting tabbed for national broadcast, I think that's fair. If it's an unequal share regardless of performance, gotta walk. That was a big reason for 1/3 of us leaving the Big 12 - things weren't balanced and LHN made it so much worse.

Edit: "Fair" is the wrong word since it's subjectively defined. I should have written "acceptable to me since it's performance-driven".
Yeah. CU can clean up on bowl money.

Wait, what?? We're not a good add for the B12???

Shocker. Garbage white trash school schilling for other garbage white trash schools. The L finger fits. Maybe chubbs should get off the radio and go jog around the block some.

No answer's perfect here. The question has to be what puts us in the best position to get an opportunity at the B1G or SEC?

Unless Kliavkoff can pull one out of his ass, I think we know what the answer there is.

Not sure how that matters. They've been in the Top 25 enough for long enough that their football brand can draw an audience, their home market gives a needed bump of in-market cable homes, and the rest of the teams in the conference rely on SoCal for recruiting so a presence is needed.

It's a no-brainer for expansion if that's the path.

My big question is who to take for #12?

I think that outside of raiding the Big 12, if we look at the MWC it would be Fresno State, Boise State and UNLV in some order.

P.S. The move might be to take all 4 on a reduced share deal.
You don’t really believe this is a good idea do you?

Whatever happens, Buffs have about 5 years to become relevant again to hop on next round of consolidation, or forever be a have not.

And you guys are talking about programs in markets where they are trampling the rights of women, ethnic minorities, LGBTQ+, the poor, the mentally ill, and anyone who believes in a secular society. I guess many of you want to associate with that because those folks seem to care more than average about football.

My strong preference is that the Big 12 can fvck right off. Stay with a group that doesn't make me want to puke and delivers at least as much likelihood of a path to the B1G (which is the only move that would matter).
That is painting with an awfully broad brush. Even if it were true, we are talking about football.

Western G5s, led by Boise State & SDSU which drove MWC media deals and national broadcast selection, were mostly left out due to geographic isolation and the Pac-12 being very conservative in its expansion approach. Other programs in the G5 have not had their sustained winning.

On the culture war, I guarantee that at the university level CU will do everything it can to not trade association with Cal & Stanford for BYU & Baylor. It matters. And I don't believe that an association of flagships and pro markets represented by CU, Utah, UA, ASU, Cal, Stanford, Oregon and Washington should panic. Stick together, restructure to fix Larry's mistakes on the conference network/offices/distribution/revenue sharing, and consider grabbing western markets and brands if it makes sense to do so.
It is too late to fix it. The sands have shifted

I don't know what the numbers are and neither does anyone else.

There is a possibility that the best deal is keeping the P10 together is the best financial path and, within that scenario, that adding 1 or more western G5s with appealing media markets or brands is the most lucrative path.

The one thing I do know is negotiations. First offer = worst offer. An offer without competing bids is going to short your value. And the worst thing would be to make a panic move. At the least, stick together and see what comes to the table when the pressure of being about to lose the exclusive negotiating window is facing ESPN. Right now, they're losing broadcast rights to 1/3 of the country and trying to park the Pac members they value into another of their properties on the cheap.

You are missing the most important point which is that the PAC-12 (10) is a sh!tty football conference. No amount of lipstick is going to make that pig attractive. Get out while you can and let’s get back to some good football.

Baylor or BYU coming to town would be a lot more fun than Oregon State or Stanford.

Les Grossman said it best…hatred makes for good football.

Step 1) Join Big 12
Step 2) Big XII absorbs ACC leftovers
Step 3) BIG/SEC form new league to jettison deadweight from their leagues
Step 4) BigXII absorbs those leftovers
Step 5) Blue bloods are NFL-lite in their super league and the Big XII league is the home of “real CFB”

Wouldn’t be surprised if this is end-game. Also wouldn’t be surprised if the super league (see: Icarus) follows the fate of all NFL competitors and crashes back down into our CFB league and everything gets scaled back to old school again
I have posted some of this (not the B12 stuff) earlier.

What I am sure of is that we are far from settled on what college football is going to look like in the future. I do see a point where multiple school administrations see how far college football has drifted from fitting the missions of their schools and deciding to get out, at least from the high levels.

Also see the NFL looking at the SEC/B1G paying out over $100 million per team per year and moving to get their hands on that money, and they have the clout to do so.

We were in the same conference with Baylor. Last time they came to Boulder, they had RG3, we had a winning record, and we drew under 50k fans. Let's not pretend there's any sort of draw there beyond a Stanford or Beaver game.

Please get over yourself.

To digress, has anyone seen a line posted on Liberty at Southern Miss on Sept. 3 ? I saw something unofficial and very speculative as Liberty -3, but this was just some internet mumblecore I believe. A number of G5 game lines are getting posted but this one isn't yet, at least on the site I use. Liberty -3, even in Hattiesburg, and even with a mild rebuild, would get my attention. On the hunt for screwed up obscure G5 lines again this year. Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure who those guys are other than some B12/Baylor centric podcast, but they think realllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllllly highly of themselves based on a couple videos I've watched

They found the Mandel tweet that Oregon/UW were bigger brands than anything B12 was the equivalent of kicking their grandma

And youtube wants me to watch some new video of their's that apparently claims B12 might get $60M in a new tv deal now. I just don't see how that's possible at all.

None of this is cut and dried. is Oregon a 1st round pick out of the pac at this point? Yes, 100%. Is uw? Maybe. But maybe just barely and only if they are coat tail riding with uo. But, ok, put them as picks ahead of CU. Then who? It is a group— us, Utah, and asu. Maybe ua sneaks in right behind the group we are in. Then Stanford, then cal, and then wsu and Osu. By process of mere elimination, it isn’t like we won’t have few options. if the pac sinks, due to greed or panic, we land better than a lot of the rest of the leftovers. I am not sure at this point the pac is going to Sink. It may stand pat. And the ucla wildcard is interesting.

i am not sure how we would have to **** up so badly as to not land in some alleged power conference although i do acknowledge if any program could find a way to **** it up, it is us.

Yes. UO and UDub have leverage, with others. First mover advantage likely.
With their little brothers and the Bay Area schools (all of whom are looking at a very uncertain athletic future if the Pac folds)? Yes. With the desert/mountain schools? No.

I find it hard to believe that a conference is going to abandon the promise of the Denver market, even if the Buffs suck.

Agreed.

Combined AZ-CO-UT population in 2040 is projected to be a little over 20 million as well. That's half of the projected 2040 Texas population. OR-WA is projected to be about 14 million in 2040.

This is where I am too. If you are not in the B1G or SEC, every other conference will be behind $50 million per year or more.

If you want to enjoy college football as a CU fan at this point, you would be wiser to simply give up on any national aspirations and focus on a league where CU can be competitive and is a fit. Personally, I could make an argument for both the Big 12 and PAC 10.

In the Big 12, they definitely take their football more seriously, there might be a few bucks more to be made, it would be kind of fun to be the high minded lefties from the mountains that are reviled by Baylor, there would be some real rivalries to gin up the fans. All of that sounds pretty good.

However, in the PAC 10, you have the better academic links fwiw, the better alumni footprint, better travel destinations, the two marquee names in Oregon and Washington, and similar cultures. I also think CU may compete better there. With realignment people have sort of forgotten about NIL. You should take a look at what Texas Tech is doing. The Matador Club says it’s raised funds to pay 100 football players $25,000 per year. CU isn’t competing with that type of football culture.

Again, not sure there is a correct decision here. For the most part, it seems like a personal opinion about which league you like. I’d personally go Big 12, but understand why others would want to stay in the PAC 10.
