CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

They’re already at 32 and I don’t think they are going to boot 10-12 teams to make room for the ones that would make sense to bring in.
This is a pure money play. I could see more if they have some sort of promotion/relegation. Otherwise, too much money gets spread to lower producing entities.

So, uhh, where did the 50 mil go
That is a good question. My feeling Is that it was included as PAC 12 revenue and would have been disbursed to the member institutions net of expenses. The reporting suggests, at least to me, that it was not embezzled, but was distributed. And now the media partner wants its money back. This also suggests that the performance of the PAC 12 was less than thought, and each member may get a reduced distribution of $4 million in 2023 to cover the repayment.

Damn glad they found this before USC and UCLA are gone. It would be much harder to clawback the funds from Big10 teams.

I get it but the money/school will continue to grow over the years just like it always has. The B1G isn’t kicking out Indiana, Rutgers, Maryland, or Purdue and the SEC isn’t kicking out Miss St, Vandy, South Carolina, or Missouri and relegation/promotion system is pure fantasy.

The total money for the conferences will increase, but the addition of teams will keep the per school payouts at a plateau, but it will behoove the blue bloods to agree to this because they need middling and lower tier programs to maintain the hierarchy they have always had. IOW, if they get rid of the steerage, they risk damaging their own brands no cupcakes to beat up on

It won’t grow as rapidly with the some of the fluff. NFL Lite is the future. The brands are just fine when they pull in $150mm a year in guaranteed $.

but what @manhattanbuff said was “some form of relegation.” If the top brands (eg. ND, OSU, Bama, USC, UT, etc.) said, “we’ll share our revenue, but only with 32 members, so we are the ‘Premiere’ teams which do not participate in relegation/promotion, but all the non-‘Premier’ teams participate in relegation/promotion” I’m not sure that the Marylands, South Carolinas, or frankly the CUs of the world would have any option but to accept that arrangement if they wanted to continue to field a football program roughly equivalent to the scope of todays FBS programs.

Relegation is such a long shot. It's pretty much an internet fantasy cooked up by a sub-section of people who jumped on the bandwagon of adopting an international soccer team and thought it was interesting.

Relegation is a great idea until Alabama or Ohio State has a couple bad years and gets relegated. Simply not going to happen.

If the P12 package is $30-$40 million, then we call the SEC and say take CU for $41 million to start and then increase from there to full participation over 4-5 years
Prime is SEC not B1G

Like the NFL, which is exactly where CFB is heading because it’s proven to be the most profitable model in sports, the entire revenue model is built on the collective. Ohio State, Michigan, Bama, Georgia, USC, etc need Maryland, Rutgers, Vandy, Arizona, etc.

But they don’t need 15 of them.

I agree it’s a long shot, but it makes a ton of sense for the bluebloods if they can find a way to be exempt from relegation.

That’s what I’ve been saying the entire time. There will be a CFP division. There’s not more than 32 teams UNLESS there’s some sort of promotion/relegation scheme. Too much money to split if you go over that figure.
Lol no, you think there will be a lower division that isn’t competing for the CFP and there will be a relegation/promotion system in place every year. It’s pure fantasy and isn’t going to happen.

Let me simplify: there will not be more than 32 without a lower division and promotion/relegation. If you think promotion/relegation is off the table, so will be >32 teams.

So then you have to believe that promotion/relegation is for sure going to happen then? Because you can’t possibly believe that Miami, ND, Clemson, FSU, UNC, Oregon, UW, etc are going to be left out

I think that your idea of actual academic institutions continuing professional football is laughable. The B1G experiences several losses (in addition to Vandy, South Carolina, Mississsippi State) and makes plenty of room for other programs.

Way to much overthinking here, since the beauty of college football is how it is spread throughout the country. Need to have a countrywide spread of properties, and that is what needs to be considered. I think that 40-48 is about right

The CFP super league doesn’t care about that.
