CU has rejoined the Big 12 and broken college football - talking out asses continues

A few gems from Wilner here:

"If a school participates in a conference for 12 years, wins no major championships, churns through five football coaches, then decides to leave, was it really ever there?" (didn't we win the MBB tournament the first year?)

"Also, CU’s departure is, at this moment, more about the psychological toll it could have on the remaining Pac-12 schools than any material damage sustained by the exit. The Buffaloes can be replaced, and easily so. They have made little competitive impact and lack the brand value and media market to kneecap the Pac-12 as it negotiates a broadcast contract." (Ha, we shall see. Hello Mountain West + Stanford).

"Of the 10 current members, Colorado is the only school the Pac-12 can lose in the realignment game without triggering either mass panic or a rush to the door that decimates the league." (do emergency meetings count as panic?)

"Our strong suspicion is that Kliavkoff has accounted for CU’s possible exit in his media rights negotiations and will pivot to Plan B." (ah yes, the media rights get better without Colorado).

"One president, DiStefano, took the option. Could others follow?" (is DeStefano our president now or is Jon Wilner a hack?)

I honestly don’t know if it was GK or the University Presidents who ****ed this up, but I’m not happy about it. I suspect we will get some details eventually. We had a good thing going and they ****ing trashed it. Assholes.
Yup. Given Kliavkoff had multiple years at NBC and MLB I have a hard time understand how a deal couldnt get done. Either TV never bid high enough. Or there were school(s) being difficult/obstructing/hindering the progress of a deal over some details or demands. Now we have everyone panicking and trying to jump ship. Ridiculous.

If he couldnt control the situation he probably should have resigned.

Likely there is a lot of blame to spread around.

Is there some sort of force field that prevents the "Prime Effect" from manipulating these opinions?

Jon, I’m more interested in your opinions on the 2023 outlooks for UC-Davis and Sac State. Best polish up that resume….

The CA (particularly SoCal) factor is very real and it's significant. It's why I've been such a big proponent of SDSU. It has about nothing to do with the Aztecs and everything to do with that geography's importance to CU. I lived off and on in San Diego County for years. I can't remember meeting a single Aztec fan and never went there for a single game. That's irrelevant. If it was a school in a city I enjoy and have some good feelings about, I'd be talking up UNLV since Nikita went there and it's the best road trip in the west. But back to SDSU, lots of CU alums and prospective students & lots of recruiting success in SD & OC.

For the university priorities, SDSU and ASU would probably be the best adds for us.
I remember people saying this about SoCal when the move to the Pac 12 was going down but I don’t think it actually made a difference once they were there.

Colorado had more success recruiting Texas when it was elite and the program wasn’t swimming in cash from donations when they were in the Pac 12.

That would make me feel a ton better about this move.

That said I have no faith that B12 is going to get UofO or UW, but stranger things have happened and they don't seem to have a lot of options (i.e. B1G has made it clear they aren't getting an invite, P12 expansion is a tough proposition with SDSU stepping on their own dick and up for a $34M exit fee to the MWC if they were to join, no real obvious candidates after that).

But the fallout would be probably Stanford going Independent, and then what happens to UU, OSU, WSU, Cal, and ASU?

Would be pretty hilarious if UU joined the Pac12, kicked all sorts of ass including winning the last 2 (potentially 3) P12 titles, and then ended up back in the MWC.
I don't want Oregon any part of what we're doing. They are walmart Texas.

Leadership was atrocious - but I do wonder if this was inevitable due to the time zone disadvantage of the PAC. The PAC was never going to receive the same amount of money as its eastern counterparts. When that happens, doesn't it become inevitable that PAC institutions will look to join other conferences?

He gets a pass for USC but not adding SDSU the next day and allowing B12 to cut the line on us with ESPN and Fox is on him. They could have (should have) worked out an offer w/ the networks and gave up the P12N. They made all the wrong moves.

Writing was on the wall all year but it was a fire alarm when there was no deal for SDSU by June 30 then again by media day.

My impression from most of the replies I've seen is that more Pac additions is something most of us would feel is signicantly positive for CU. We don't perfectly fit either conference's geography and have important ties to both. When politics creeps in, you also see the purple state CO stuff where we're a state that's home to "Focus on the Family" Colorado Springs, "Berkeley of the Rockies" Boulder, and everything in between. So a conference which balanced Midwest, Southwest, Rocky Mountain and Pacific Coast is pretty much as home for CU/CO as you can get.
Great point. But Colorado is no longer purple. It’s consistently blue.

Oregon State and Washington State are literally state duplicates with Zero value

Blue by population growth and metro concentration with how that's impacting majority votes.

But still very purple culturally with suburbs which go either direction politically and other areas which are as red as it gets.

I still think it's mostly a state that has that frontier and "new west" attitude of entrepreneurship and individualism with almost an overdose of "live and let live" which doesn't neatly fit either party.

Nevada is similar. Types of states where most people support your right as an adult to smoke weed and own a gun as long as you don't let your choices fvck over someone else - so mixing those things is frowned upon.

RG: We want to be on linear networks and we get that with ESPN and Fox (in the press conference). Said linear at least three times. Basically said it’s all about team travel (?), linear exposure, game times and additional revenue streams outside of the media deal (maybe a nod to the playoff revenue?).

Basically, he’s anti-Apple and uses an Android (Samsung at that).

Yeah, about that Rick….
“We haven’t really changed our position regarding basically migrating ESPN’s flagship service as a direct-to-consumer or streaming platform,” Disney CEO Bob Iger said on the conglomerate’s May 10 earnings call. “We think there’s an inevitability to that, but it’s a huge decision for us to make. And we know that we’ve got to get it right, both in terms of pricing and timing.”

Well, the Pac 12 will just have to trade up for those lost teams.

And also, **** USC and UCLA.

I get being mad at USC and UCLA since them leaving was the beginning of the end but they were just doing what's best for them.

Any real blame for the demise of the Pac starts right here with this arrogance: "It's hard to imagine very many scenarios for our conference to expand because the bar is so high".
