Joel Klatt mentioned on one of his podcasts this week that he went through the UCF Film and Colorado went from 80% of the time in 4-Wide to 75% in 3-Wide with a Tight End and that Smalls played more snaps than Wester and Horn because one of them were off the field for Smalls. I have been crying for this non stop and Klatt says that it worked perfectly to accomplish so many good things related to Run Game, Protections, and how it steadied our line etc. He expected us to stay in that and use it as our new primary plan, and it leans directly into Shurmur getting his way, and imagine if we would have used that against Nebraska instead of thinking we could block those monsters.
I still firmly believe that the attitude that having Hunter-Horn-Wester-Sheppard with Shedeur was so inviting and so overwhelming mentally that Prime and Shedeur wanted it to be the thing, and the change is going to propel us forward as contenders instead of getting our QB killed.

Now imagine if we actually recruited a legit TE instead of converting a DE. I actually have hope that Smalls can develop into a decent TE option if they keep him involved throughout the year, but someone like Chamon Metayer would be a huge weapon for this offense right now.
Smalls though is a legit 5-Star athlete, although that is all he is, a big time athlete. His blocks are not pretty, but he is so powerful that it works. I am stunned that Hart is not getting snaps as he has spent 3 years at Ohio State learning blocking schemes, but he is still the odd man out.
I was always wondering if the idea of having both Horn and Wester on the field at the same time with both being really small WR's would come to haunt us, and they have determined that most teams do not put two small WR's on the field at the same time. It also begs to wonder if even though we have a stellar WR corp, we could stand to be bigger moving into next year, and we do have bigger guys in the mix for the future.
It really made the difference in that game. However, Shurmur is going to have to continually mix that up though. Just running 11 personnel with the TE rarely going out for a pass will get adjusted by defenses. Finding a balance to that is what he will have to find.
Prime mentioned during the offseason that one of the key things is that a TE makes the defense substitute personnel. We didn't get that last year but Smalls is forcing that to happen. I think our balance between 10 & 11 will vary from week to week in the game plan depending on whether the opponent has better talent depth at LB or DB.
