Deion Sanders - HC Jackson State

Deion in Boulder would be amazing, but it would be amazing for 1 year before he moves onto somewhere bigger and we are back to square one again
That’s my concern as well but I’m having some trouble reconciling why this is a bigger concern with PT than any other candidate.

I don’t think he’s proven he himself is a good enough coach to sustain success somewhere. Great coaches can pick great staffs. Kind of unknown on that.

it’s easy to ride his name/likeness at a nowhere place like Jackson St.
Transfers and even coaches are attracted. But you still got to get the right ones.

it will be easy to improve CU dramatically in the same way in the era of transfers. Dramatically in one year. Even if you don’t pick a great staff. But then the hard work would begin as you can’t get next level without building a foundation.

Much deeper pockets would certainly come calling.

I see no evidence that hard part of foundation building is either in his skillset or interests. So that’s a wildcard.

A team that goes from last to average in one year built on transfers can go back to Last really quickly, I will suggest.

I don’t know that he’d leave us in a better place 5 years out than a guy like Mendenhall.
But damn, I’d still like to find out! It’s too shiny to ignore.

You take a chance on a guy like Deon every time at a School like CU because he has McCartney potential in recruiting. You're not finding that with any other coach available to CU.
This is where I am at. The worst that can happen has already happened so why not take a shot. Looking at j state and their schedule I am a lot less impressed with that program than before but why not give him a shot.

There is no way Prime is coming to Boulder. NONE

Why would he take a job at CU and deal with the dumpster fire that the CU admin has created? He is going to have major colleges wanting him. Schools that care about wining football games.

IF it is true that donors really want Prime and IF it is true that he’s gotten to the business plan discussion phase, then RG and Saliman MUST find the money. They cannot lose Prime.
Getting his assistants paid seems like a major part of the sell. What is your thought on an all JSU staff coming to Boulder?

his JSU staff

his DC sounds legit? DC for the Jets and Bills for a few years, then wandered into the Alliance of American Football league (wtf?)

his OC sounds super green

Tim Brewster is on staff, weren't we wondering if 247 Brewster had an in?

Simply paying, say, $1M for assistants that used to make $300K doesn't suddenly make them 3X the coaches. That's what MM2 did. Unless they're truly worth that much - maybe because others are wanting to poach them and pay them $1M. If we're going to throw more money at assistants, it should go towards better assistants.
It would be shamefully bad if USF outbids CU.

You let him pick every single one. I don’t care if he brings all high school coaches. That being said JSU staff isn’t bad. There’s a few that aren’t real accomplished yet but if you believe in him as a coach/recruiter you have to believe in his ability to identify good coaches.

Nobody is paying non-coordinators $1m, but to your broader point, paying JSU assistants may be part of the deal to get Prime. Bigger programs may not have to accept that, but CU almost certainly has to agree to Prime's terms. And no, USF isn't outbidding CU if CU really wants him.

Yeah the way I look at it is if you choose Prime, you are going all in on recruiting as much elite talent as possible and shelving the "teacher"/"developer" method. Basically, you're going after Deion Sanders. He is the draw. The assistants are almost irrelevant from a recruiting standpoint if Deion is backing them.

Kinda get the sense one of the assistants would stay and take over as the HC and maybe keep a few of the others.

I’d agree to some extent. Deion is very bright and i don’t see him just having a bunch of his buddies on staff. If those guys aren’t recruiting and getting the most out of the players i don’t see him keeping them around. I think he absolutely thinks his staff can teach/develop

we all have champagne taste and beer budgets... sniff, jeeves, i do not know if i could support a deon hire because his assistants seem lightly credentialed.

if you believe in the concept of prime as a potentially great hc at CU then you roll the dice and do this. i find it highly doubtful that CU will not find a way on its side to do a deal. the question will be if prime wishes to grace our sidelines with his presence.

the fact that talks appear to have progressed beyond "hell no, i don't want that job" is a small net positive.
