#Fire Coach Dorrell

Yeah, I'm quoting myself - I still think this isn't a bad idea.

It kind of doesn't matter which coach you put the interim tag on - you'd be laying down a marker now that this performance is unacceptable.

If you really want to make it clear that we're hiring someone new as opposed to giving Chev or Wilson an audition you find one of the retired coaches hanging around Dal Ward to be interim for the rest of the season (Cabral or Barnett would work - no one would think either one would want to be here next year).

We're going into a "bye" week - let Chev throw out KD's playbook and show us what he can do without constraints from above. Give him the opportunity to succeed or fail instituting his own plays.

We might pull out a couple wins this year if the above happens, and we'd be better set for next year.

If nothing happens (and that's the most likely) we'll finish 1-11, maybe 2-10.

And then I'd say we'd have 2/3 odds of an lame duck year with KD in 2022, and a 1/3 chance that he gets fired sometime around January 10th, you know, a great time to be hiring a coach!
Can’t tell if that last part is sarcastic, but I feel like it’s fairly standard for programs to be making new hires after the new year, no?

It is sarcasm. It's not a terrible time to actually hire someone. But let's put it this way: it's a good time to be *concluding* a coaching search, but a pretty ****ty time to be starting one.

I would hope that if that’s the plan, the “search” is starting well before that and they move quickly after the first of the year so they can make moves for the Feb signing day

Didn't he call his own offense as a senior in HS? That would point to the young man being smart & just woefully uncomfortable with the offense right now. Locked up, afraid to make mistakes, and slow to process decisions. Game reps last year would have absolutely improved the situation.

Not what I heard.

Of course I didn’t. You’re a ****ing nightmare in the game threads. Regardless, you continue to make subtle and indirect excuses for the staff

Cool. Call me crazy, but I'd prefer not to make a coaching change. Frankly, the only way I'd want to do that is if this team loses 10 games.

You’re all over the place. You’re participating in the “who’s the next coach” thread, you’re suggesting that you have been critical of the staff in the game day thread, and yet now you’re saying you’d prefer not to make a change.

Also, why? It is so evidently clear that Dorrell has zero clue what he is doing in every single aspect of program management, from recruiting to staff management, to X’s and O’s, to gameday coaching, and media relations. There is nothing that anyone can point to to suggest he should get more than this season.

I was very negative about the team performance last night, just as much as the next person that was realistic about what we saw last night. But this is one of the most comically bad posts I’ve ever seen on this board, so congrats on that I guess?

How much would you like to post that CU doesn’t win another game? I’m happy to take that bet.
You butchered the quote post… but I stand corrected. I still think Arizona is bad enough that we could somehow win that game just barely. But yeah we’re likely 1-11, so I’ll eat crow

This incident with the cameraman isn't going to be grounds to fire, neither would be his refusal/failure to do post game radio interviews, etc.

I would be interested to see what the exact wording regarding press relations is in his job description.

In many occupations the formal job description at the time that a person enters into an employment contract is considered a part of that contract. My contracts when I was in education specifically referenced the job description.

If the job description that came with his hiring has wording regarding maintaining a positive relationship with the media, doing the regularly scheduled appearances, etc. and he is failing to meet the expectations of the description this could be looked at as cause. They would probably have to communicate to him that he isn't meeting expectations and give him an opportunity to correct his performance but if he failed to do so they would then be able to fire for cause.

The same may also apply if the job description has specific wording regarding activities and relations related to relations with donors. I have no idea how KD is doing in terms of his relations with donors and the fund raising efforts but this is an accepted part of being a head coach at the FBS level.

I don't want to make another change unless we absolutely have to (Lose to Arizona and we're looking at 1-11. Like 2012, that's a point where the ****show has to stop.) because that would make 3 coaching changes going back to December of 2019. That's a ridiculous amount of program instability, and that's something that is going to limit our pool of candidates should we make a move. Is that really that hard for you to understand-or is your head that far up your ass?

It’s becoming more and more common for coaches to be fired early on if they aren’t showing progress, or in this case showing a lot of backwards movement. See: Taggart at FSU for example. No, we aren’t even close to the level of FSU, but saying that no one would touch this job if he’s fired after/during this year is just false. If anything it shows more of a commitment to winning than letting this **** go on and putting CU in an even worse situation further down the road. Do I think it’s likely that he’s fired? No. Do I think we would be just fine getting another coach if he is? Yes.

We fired Mike MacIntyre after 6 seasons and poor results, Mel Tucker left after one season because he doubled his salary in a better situation than CU, we hired Karl Dorrell because it was mid March and the candidate pool was pretty weak, and he was fired because he proved very quickly to be in way over his head.

Context matters. If Rick George can’t explain and sell that to a candidate, then he needs to get as far away from this program as possible.

Good thing we get to play Arizona. A one win season would suck but get that second win and it makes it all worth while.
Lol, I should not have to clarify that I don’t think 2 wins makes anything worthwhile. He needs to go, I was responding simply to the point that I think 1-11 is likely but Arizona is that bad, there’s a chance there.

Try selling that to an agent of a candidate who is looking at multiple other jobs. Good luck!

I would expect that most candidates and their agents would understand that coming into the interview phase. What RG really needs to sell is the institutional investment in providing a coach everything he needs to win. Also, that institutional investment needs to be increased from its current level.

What would scare candidates away is if CU tried to use this cameraman incident to get out from Dorrell on the cheap. Unless it’s an absolutely terrible offense, trying to find cause to fire a losing coach to save on the buyout looks incredibly small-time.

If Dorrell isn’t the guy to lead your program, then take your medicine, fire him and pay his buyout - coaches aren’t idiots, they know there’s a chance they may get fired someday if they take a HC job, so be a program that will honor his contract and pay his buyout if that day ever comes.

So what are the buyout numbers? We’ve been talking about this $7.5m this year and $5m after 12/31, but that appears to be if HE terminated the contract. If CU terminates the contract without cause, they owe him whatever’s left on the contract, which is currently just below $15m. Is this accurate?
