Fishers return

A League of Their Own is better than everything on your list other than Bull Durham and Major League.

I didn't notice Mac's reaction, but I read the post game. MM was laughing about it, I think the conversation you all wish he had with Nick was, in fact, the conversion they ended up having. Also funny was Fisher saying he knew as soon as he left it was a bad decision, but he hoped if he took it to the house Mac would forgive him:ROFLMAO:

I hate to agree with you patebuff (cause you never agree with me), but you are totally right in that upgrading Gamboa's spot is a necessity to advance the Defense. I have honestly not even seen Jones play a down this year? Is Gamboa so smart that he knows if he takes a play off that we will all see what two athletic middle backers would look like and realize he is a minor liability? Also, the DL is still a step below being a really solid bunch, and maybe there is a late recruit or another JC guy that can come in and continue that upgrade.
I always agree with you! Just not to your face. :D

Two points in favor of what Fischer did.

One is that you never want to take the aggression out of your players, especially defensive players. This is kind of like the discussion about having DBs knock the ball down instead of intercept it on fourth down. I don't want my defensive players worrying about should I or shouldn't I. Just make the play, it will lose you a lot less than the hesitation about should I or shouldn't I will cost you.

When he was still playing somebody once asked John Elway about why he changed the play call and threw the ball downfield late in a game the Broncos were leading. His response, paraphrased was "The best way to protect a lead is to add a touchdown to it and let the opponent burn clock trying to get it back."

Now the balance of all that is that Fischer had to get through some traffic before hitting open field. Had he been tackled inside the 10 or 15 then the Buffs make a mistake Cal could have won the game on it.

I'd rather have the points on the board than worry about coulda, woulda, shouldas.

So you were okay with Blackmon catching a punt inside the 10 and retreating to them 5 and getting tackled? Or Irwin cleaning a guy’s clock and getting ejected? Or Montez throwing into coverage and getting picked? Those are all aggressive plays. You want guys to be aggressive but you also want them to play smart.

I think you've gotta find a way to balance the two no? You've gotta gamble at times depending on situation.

You will notice that I specifically emphasized defensive players.

You do want players to be intelligent, no I don't want punt returners to be regularly retreating and losing yardage. At the same time had Blackmon gotten around the corner and ended up with a huge return we would all be praising him.

QBs all the time have to balance risk and reward, no QB goes without some INTs, the question is how many vs. how many plays they make.

Irwin's play wasn't aggressive, it was dumb, big difference. There is no reward to going after somebodies head, you don't ever get good results when you make contact with an opponents head.

Like everyone else, watching Fisher streak up the sideline to paydirt was a thrill and emphasizes what is fun about college football. Unbridled passion. Then I watched Fisher reach MM on sideline and MM giving him strong words which I assumed was about taking the ball out of the endzone...but wait. MM kept waving at the south endzone where NF scored. I was expecting MM to be pointing at the endzone where NF intercepted. Then after game in interview MM said what I think is key. He wanted NF to go down at the cal 2 yard line. So while many are fretting about him coming out of endzone and thinking MM yelling about the same, I think MM wanted him to just drop at other end of field so as to be nowhere near where cal could score.

Really? I'd rather have 7 more points and kick it off through the end zone.

Yes I’m not prepared to accuse MAC of being so clueless he’d rather run out the clock than take 2 steps and get 7 points.

This discussion is fine but going nowhere. Bottom line is we got 7 pts so many want to claim it was the right move. And from the result, it apparently WAS the right move. Failing to get the TD on the fake field goal vs UCLA was the wrong move, since it didn’t work. Had it worked, of course Mac would be applauded for boldly choosing the right move.

I’m done with this. Go Buffs beat ASU!!

Remember, a guy suffered what is probably a season ending injury after that play. Fisher takes a knee, no injury.

It was a thrilling, exciting, amazing... and stupid thing to do.

You can't play afraid of injury. Sadly a career ending injury can happen on any play. Don't remember the game but last year I saw a guy stumble and fall on the leg of an OL in victory formation and he had to be carried off. Fischer had no way of knowing nor should he that play would result in an injury.

It's different if you are making a play that involves taking direct shots at other players but returning an INT isn't one of those.

I missed missed this. Who got hurt?

It’s just been so long since we’ve had a big play like that (pick 6, kick return for TD, long post completions, Hail Mary, heck even many exciting turnovers), as a fan, it was like plunging into a crystal clear, cool clean mountain spring after hiking up and down the Grand Canyon on the hottest, dusty day of summer.

I was sitting near the south end zone when Fisher scored. That play was a ton of fun, period.

That's a reach. He caught that ball with about 2:50 left so CU couldn't just take a knee to run out the clock - who knows what would have happened.

Am I actually getting an argument that it wasn’t a very ill advised and downright stupid thing to do?

Yeah not like the lineman couldn't have got hurt any number of ways. If you think that's what football is, God Bless ya.
