BUFFS WIN!!!! BUFFS WIN!!!!!

Pulled it out. SDSU is a pretty good mid major. Oscar Cluff always seemed to have pretty good games against us while he was at Wazzu. How the hell did he end up at SDSU?

Tonight was Hammond's best game as a Buff.
I feel like he’s gotten a lot of hate on this board, as our fifth highest rated recruit in the touted 21 class he’s been the second best recruit from that class. Better than Lawson, Quincy, and Ruff.

Stayed all 4 years played his heart out after KJ went down in 22, and helped us make a run. Having a career season shooting split wise 48, 44, 90 splits. Yes he has turnover issues and can’t drive but such an amazing use of a scholly. Especially in today’s transfer portal era. Love the local kids. Think he’s been asked to do too much at times but that’s not on him one bit.

Also holy **** has Carrington really played well in his role. Thought this was a Strating situation at first where Tad rewards the hardworking walk on to show everyone else how he wants them to play. But he’s got some ups with his recent dunks, had some and ones and rebounds well.

What I love about Tad and our program, how many walkons nation wide have turned into rotation players in the power 4 level?

Agree 100% with all of this.

I also really like his confidence as a shooter. Last year it felt like he was the only guy who would regularly and confidently pull the trigger on an open look from 3. He just looks locked in and decisive when he shoots, which I think helps his make rate.

Carrington is a plus defender.

I'll give him credit for a very good game last night. I was pleased and impressed. He was also playing a bunch of mid major true frosh guards for the most part.

KenPom individual ratings should give some confidence. Here are the guys over 100 (plus players) on offense:

Malone (121.0)
Carrington (120.6)
RJ (116.5)
Jakimovski (111.8)
Hammond (111.5)
Baskin (108.0)
Ruffin (102.9)
Dak, Rancik and Diop are all 90+. The only guy really struggling is Kossaras (71.1 😲), but Tad keeps giving him more minutes so I have hope that he's doing things in practice we just haven't seen translate to games yet.

There's reason to believe in this team.

Again thats nothing to do with Hammond though, that’s your perception on Tads roster construction. Outside of us not being able to afford a big time transfer guard, bringing one in would have prevented RJs growth this year.

If you told me this year through 10 games Hammond was our leading scorer, I would have thought we’d be 5-5 at this point and that our transfers haven’t played well at all. Neither is true. I don’t think anybody expected this team to go 9-2 non-conference this year with the Maui invitational on the docket.

I feel like people also forget he was on his way to a great season last year averaging around 10 ppg on the stacked team into January before he kept getting injured and lost his mojo down the stretch, kind of was like KJ in the second half of his sophomore year.

Hammond Propels Buffs Past South Dakota State

By: Neill Woelk, Contributing Editor

BOULDER
— Colorado's Julian Hammond III scored a career-high 23 points Friday to lift the Buffaloes to an 81-70 win over South Dakota State at the CU Events Center.

Tad Boyle's Buffs won their third in a row to improve to 8-2 overall while SDSU fell to 8-5.

Hammond scored 10 of his 23 in the final four minutes of the game, including a clutch 3-pointer and free throw with 49 seconds remaining to salt away the win. He also had seven assists and just one turnover. Elijah Malone had 15 points on 7-for-8 shooting and nine rebounds for CU and RJ Smith added 11 points.

Joe Sayler led the Jackrabbits with 16 points.

While the Buffs led for almost the entire game, they never pushed their lead into double digits until the final minutes. SDSU stayed close by hitting 11 3-pointers, including seven in the first half, but the Buffs shot 50 percent from the floor (28-for-56) for the game to make the difference.

Colorado finished with a 35-26 edge on the boards and the Buffs were better defensively after the break, holding the Jackrabbits to just 4-for-12 shooting from long range.

CU also hit 18 of its 19 free throw attempts, including 16 in the second half.

"I've got a lot of respect for them, and I knew it wasn't going to be easy," Boyle said. "I was disappointed in our ability to guard the 3-point line tonight … I thought we did some really good things offensively, but defensively, if we take away their threes and make those tough twos, you know, it's a 20-point game. But overall it's a good win and we'll take it."
...

DECISIVE MOMENT: Colorado's lead was down to five with just more than a minute to play. But Hammond hit a long 3-pointer just before the shot clock buzzer, was fouled and hit the free throw to give CU a 79-70 edge with 49 seconds remaining.

WHAT IT MEANS: Colorado is now 200-40 at home under Boyle, including 103-8 in non-conference home games.

NEXT UP: The Buffs return to action Saturday, Dec. 21, with a 1 p.m game against Bellarmine at the CU Events Center. Colorado then opens Big 12 play on Dec. 30 with a 7 p.m game against Iowa State.

I'm one of those Buff fans who thought the Buffs would be at this point and also the Buffs have one extra win thanks to the one over UConn. It doesn't take rocket science to get to that point. I even posted a take from a coach who coached at the D1, D2, and NAIA level showing that the top D2 & NAIA teams aren't that much different from those good non power conference D1 teams and the NAIA & D2 transfers just needed to adjust to tougher competition.

That UConn win is looing really good right now. They seem to have righted the ship with wins over Gonzaga and Baylor. That was the win the last few Buffs teams needed in non conference.

If we take care of Bellarmine, our only loss outside of Big 12 opponents will be a neutral loss to Michigan State. That plus a neutral win over UConn means that all program goals they may have for this season are very much alive.

It's crazy to see that with probably the least talented team in the past 10 years, we are having the best OOC resume in the past 10 years :ROFLMAO:

I did predict seven Big 12 conference wins. With that 9-2 record (assuming we beat the last non-conf team), seven wins would get us to a 16-15 overall record before the Big 12 tourney. A winning season is possible this year.

I would argue for 2016 (2015 non-con), 2020 (2019 non-con), and last season's resumes. Especially that 2019-20 season -- we played a top-80 non-con schedule and went 11-2.
2020 season we lost to NIU, last year we lost to CSU.

Both are good teams, but on paper, neither is top 20.

ISU is for sure a top 10 team and MSU will more likely than not a top 20 team in the end of the season.

We are definitely worse than the teams in those two years, but the OOC resume just looks a little better

THE BUFFALOES: Colorado is 8-2 overall and winners of its last three following an 81-70 win over South Dakota State on Dec. 13. The Buffaloes improved to 7-0 at the CU Events Center this season, have won their last 10 home games dating back to last year and have won 23 of 24 since the beginning of the 2023-24 season.

Away from the friendly confines, Colorado placed sixth at the 2024 Maui Invitational. A thrilling 73-72 win over then-No. 2/2 ranked UConn on the tournament's second day (Nov. 26) highlighted the trip for the Buffaloes who eventually fell to No. 5/5 Iowa State 99-71 in the consolation final (fifth place game) on Nov. 27 to round out the event with a 1-2 record. The game against Iowa State counted as a nonconference game and the two long-time rivals are set for a rematch in the Big 12 Conference opener in Boulder on Dec. 30.

Colorado is averaging 76.5 points per game, shooting 47.3 percent from the field and 38.6 percent from 3-point range. Colorado's 3-point percentage ranks 28th in the nation and third in the Big 12.

Defensively, Colorado is allowing 69.7 points per game while opponents are shooting 41.4 percent.

The Buffaloes have had a flair for the dramatic this season. Colorado has had to overcome double-figure deficits in three wins including a rally from 11-down in the win over Pacific. The Buffaloes erased a 17-point deficit in the opener over Eastern Washington (details on page 6).

Colorado is 3-2 this season when trailing at the half, compared to the 2024 NCAA Tournament team that won just two of 10 contests in that situation. The Buffaloes are 3-0 in games decided by 10 points or less.

At home the Buffaloes are averaging 80.7 points per game while shooting 49.0 percent from the floor and 38.5 percent from 3-point range. Colorado is holding its home opponents to 64.9 points on 37.0 percent shooting while enjoying a plus-10 advantage on the boards.

GRAND GRADS: As anticipated, Colorado's three graduate transfers, spanning all levels of collegiate basketball, have made immediate impacts for the Buffaloes.
...

ABOUT THE KNIGHTS: Bellarmine, out of the Atlantic Sun Conference, is 3-9 overall and has lost two-straight and four of its last five. The Knights are coming off a 92-55 setback at Wyoming on Dec. 19. Bellarmine has just one win against an NCAA Division I opponent, defeating Bowling Green at home, 80-68, on Nov. 23. The Knights average 74.3 points and are the top shooting team in the ASUN both overall (.472) and from 3-point range (.366). Defensively, Bellarmine allows 79.8 points while opponents shoot 48 percent from the field and nearly 40 percent from 3-point range.

Junior guard Ben Johnson averages 13.2 points and has a team-best 30 3-point field goals. Junior guard Billy Smith averages 12.8 points and leads the team in assists (29) and is second in 3-point field goals (29). Junior forward Curt Hopf is Bellarmine's top rebounder at 5.1 per contest.

THE SERIES: This will be the first meeting between Colorado and Bellarmine. The Buffaloes are 9-1 all-time against schools that currently make up the Atlantic Sun Conference, the last game an 84-60 Colorado win over North Alabama on Dec. 15, 2022.

Heading to the game today mostly to see the Heisman stuff. Taking my two young boys. Anyone know how strict CU is on outside food? Trying to bring them some snacky stuff
Just don’t make it obvious and you’re fine.
