Games thread- MEN'S BBall ends non-conf. play hosting South Dakota St. (Fri., 12/13/24; 7:00 PM; ESPN+) and Bellarmine (Sat., 12/21, 1:00 PM; ESPN+)

I’ll give credit to the athletic department for organizing the Heisman celebration. Certainly the atmosphere wasn’t close to the best I’ve seen at the Keg, but it was a lot better than what you would expect from a game against a really bad non-conference opponent over Christmas break.

watching the highlights, looked like Bellarmine was a half foot shorter than us and slower at every position. I want to see Diop get those buckets against B12 competition, if he can that's a really good sign for our tourney hopes
The game reminded me of 5th graders playing 3rd graders with CU basically having their way with Bell. Often just took the ball away from the visitors at will.

Crazy he's waited this long to ask for the AD to acknowledge his existence
I think he’s probably getting close to retirement in the next couple of seasons so he’s probably more willing to rock the boat and, as he’s made clear, he loves Colorado basketball and I am sure he doesn’t want the program to fall back into irrelevance after he leaves.

I also believe part of that is him thinking about his legacy. He has had a huge passion for growing basketball in the state of Colorado with the flagship university leading the way. So he wants to do everything he can to leave the program in a good place that doesn't take a rare coach to succeed. And he wants CU to be a program that plays in front of a sellout crowd every home game. He sees these things slipping.

he should have been saying this in 2014, not 2024. I listened to that whole interview and it comes off like a man realizing how much more could have been done for his program if only his leadership cared. It comes off more than a bit bitter. In 2014 it would have caused waves and maybe created change. Now it's going to result in nothing, at best, for him

He probably should have said it much earlier but 2014 was a year after Bohn, who had been very supportive of the basketball program, was fired so Tad probably didn’t know at that point that things would get bad under RG.

Some of the timing is also that the football program is finally in a stable position for the first time since Tad got here so he feels like now that the cash cow is producing he can tell the AD to spread the love.

That's when it became obvious and it was the time to strike. But he didn't. Tad kept saying his job was to make the bball program good and that was it. That attitude kept him quiet and now that prime is getting freaking luxury jets for a bowl game and the red carpet in tad's building the year after a tournament run, the difference in support has overwhelmed his blinders.

Tad deserved a better AD. And probably a better fan base.

I’ve never quite understood the binary nature of the CU AD. It doesn’t have to be Hoops OR Football. It can be both. I realize that the football program was such a gigantic dumpster fire that it required a disproportionate level of resources to turn it around. Hopefully we are in a position now where we can support the basketball program more.

I think things went south when they merged the hoops C-Unit into the football one. It got swallowed.

I wasn’t aware that happened and I agree it’s a bad move. Hoops fans have their own priorities compared to football fans. As a student, you can be in both, but the leadership needs to be separate (while being afforded similar support levels).

Tad Boyle - wow! To me, that’s a fairly direct shot at RG and Saliman.

RG still doesn't know that CU has had a decent hoops team for over a decade. I'll give him credit, he's really good at handing the game ball to whatever corporate sponsor bought his daily lunch.

For the most part, yesterday's crowd was an embarrassment for the basketball team. Sure, I get the hype in having the Heisman trophy winner and starting QB in the building. But they should have just canceled the basketball game given the crowd's interest level. The majority of attendees would have rather watched Shedeur and Travis jack up shoot-around 3's for 2 hours. I'd be willing to bet that over half of the crowd will never return to the CEC and for probabiy half, it was their first time in the building.

Yep, but if he is this frustrated, why did he not make his frustrations known much earlier? RG is a not a good AD, but I am surprised Tad is taking his frustrations public. Seems like might be his last year.

I have a different take.

I've also been critical of the CUAD for not better marketing hoops.

And, I applaud ADRG for leveraging the popularity of TH12, SS2 and the football team at a hoops game that was scheduled during an academic break to expose more CU fans to basketball.

Yes, many probably hadn't attended a BB game before. That's good! Expose sports consumers to the best entertainment value in Boulder. They saw CU dominate and hopefully had a fun time. Some will be back.

This. More butts in seats is always a good thing

I was shocked at how quickly people left after they realized the whole Heisman thing was over. People sitting next to us left as soon as they saw the football team go up to the concourse before halftime (guess they didn't realize they were going to do a tribute at halftime?) Guy and his kid left half eaten food and a 90% full beer.

Don't get me wrong, that was probably one of the least entertaining basketball games I have been to, but still, sit back, relax, enjoy yourself a bit.

I don’t think Tad stood up the entire second half, something I’ve never seen before. Although he mentioned he was very upset the team didn’t win the second half, so I’m glad he’s still got it.

That team playing the CU intramural winners (A league) would be an entertaining game. Assuming they got tad to coach them for a week or so.

I get why he scheduled them, but it was a bit unfortunate that is they level of game a bunch of non-basketball people got to witness.

Said the same thing as we entered. It was obvious.

This.

After halftime, Nikita and I had a quick conversation about staying until the end. Basically came down to, "Do we have any other plans or know of any fun events we need to get to?" "No." "Then hanging out at the Keg for an hour is going to be more fun than sitting on our couch at home for an extra hour."

I'm not sure what calculus goes on for others. I feel like most people spend their lives racing to red lights - rushing through whatever they're doing instead of being 100% engaged in the present moment. I think a good portion of any crowd I'm in is spending as much bandwidth thinking about their strategy for beating traffic as they are on experiencing the event. And most of them are just going home or out to eat afterwards anyway, so it's not like they're on a schedule.

Rushing to beat traffic is one of my biggest pet peeves. If you are going to stress out about traffic at the ending of a game, you are often missing some of the best parts of the basketball game.

I used to go to Maryland basketball games with my Dad and his buddy, at a minimum we would be at the top of the concourse ready to run to the car at the end of the game if not leaving with time to go. I was always like WTF, this is the best part. Later on, it was just my dad and I, we would just sit there for another 15-20 min, listen to the coaches postgame show that they broadcasted on the speakers, and drove home without issue.
