Games thread- MEN'S BBall opens season hosting Eastern Washington (Mon., 11/4/24; 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and No. Colorado (Friday, 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

Quickest fix (or at least gives a living chance towards end of season) is to leave Hammond out of starting line-up…and try to let RJ develop into a leader. Despite lacking playing time, he is a redshirt sophmore and has practiced w some real dudes the past couple of yrs. Hammond will bring the team down to his own, very limited on energy and leadership, level…that is just death by a 1000 cuts…and prefer not having to watch it.
Even if it isn’t a fix for this year, it’s the best plan to help us next year.

The best plan for next year is for Tad to get off his soapbox about NIL, accept that the landscape of his profession has changed, and proceed accordingly.

Having said that, congrats to him on his 300th win! He's had a hell of a run here.

That’s not true and kitchen sinking it. Patton had numerous teams which would run circles around this team.
Yes, RP had some solid teams. Good players, players I respect and love.

The quote, however, was "This is worst Buffs team I can remember"

You don't have to go back that far to find this rotting ****pile, coached by, yes, RP:1000003362.jpg

It is hard to find many bright spots on this team. I think that Dak, Rancik, and Kossaras pass the eye test as solid big12 starters once they develop. RJ also made a bunch of winning plays and Malone should be able to hold his own. We are going to be bad this year but I hope that we use this as a developmental year for the guys I mentioned above. Interestingly, the first three guys I named all rode the pine most of the second half.

Jakimovski was surprisingly bad and inactive on offense. Baskin looks like he feasted in a lower level due to his athleticism and he isn't more athletic at this level. Hammond just isn't what you need from a point guard. Diop is not very skilled and doesn't have the size and athleticism to make up for it like Dak does. Ruffin is fine but it is a bit of waste to invest minutes in him during a lost season.

JMO but player development in the NIL era won't have as big a benefit to a program as it did before. We'll be a minor league to the bigger fish.

Yup. Tad's whole model is shot. It's a miracle he kept last year's team together. At least two guys took way less money than they could have.

yep, I hear you and the 2006-2007 RP team was awful. Having said that, he was forced to resign by Tharp during the season, so everything collapsed on itself. That team had some decent talent with Roby, Dominque Coleman, Xavier Silas and Jeremy Williams. In fact, the prior year 2005-2006, RP's team went 20-10, 9-7 in the Big 12, and arguably could have made the Tournament.

Tad is obviously a vastly superior coach to RP, which is why I am surprised this team is so lacking in talent from what I have seen. I was told several times Tad had a $2 mm budget from 5430 for the transfer portal. If so, how did we not end-up with a couple of high end D1 transfers? I don't get it.

Because the top dogs are working with over $10M and anyone we'd call a peer is $4M+. We basically have a MWC budget for NIL when it comes to hoops.

Just making sure to correct the history here:

- Mike Bohn was the AD, Tharp had stepped down in Nov of '04 during the football scandal.
- I don't necessarily agree with 'forced'. RP announced before the season that he would resign. "I will neither seek nor accept an extension of my contract," was his quote. Bohn: "This came as a big surprise to me. I'm also disappointed, we've had weekly meetings that have been constructive and positive." This was announced Oct 25th.

I think RP was just done with Colorado, and when Bohn didn't immediately offer an extension, he decided to bail rather than have to answer questions about it all season. That said, I do not believe Bohn would ever have offered an extension. Regardless, the decision on his future shouldn't have waited that long -- this was reminiscent of the end of Hawk's tenure, when Bohn (due to political pressure, granted) gave him a lame-duck year, as well.

My perception: RP had put everything into the '06 season. Multiple transfers, rolling the dice on another NCAA run, like '03, to earn a new deal. That season was... fine. Some decent home wins, but only one Q1-level win in a down-year-version of the B12. They did not earn any significant consideration for the Dance, and quickly got bounced from the NIT. 7 players graduated, and RP brought in the biggest frosh/transfer class I can remember for '07. When Hall was declared ineligible in Sept, that meant there were only 3 returners, with one of them Marcus King-Stockton. With Hall, they're probably in the 125 range, nationally; maybe higher. Without, behind a checked-out RP, and relying on Kal Bay to run the point, it was a disaster. Highlight -- RP chucking Silas into the advertising boards during an on-court fight with Nebraska.

Re, NIL: I have been told by people who would know that the NIL budget was nowhere near $2 mil, but I understand that sources/stories/perceptions of the NIL situation can vary, since there's no accountability/transparency.

Ultimately, I disagree with Tad trading one season of LOB, Hadley for one season of Baskin and Jak, and think that was a flawed thought process (Eddie leaving is... fine, and probably as much Eddie's choice as anything). Failing to get a guard, even more flawed. Honestly -- I think he was ready to retire, then, some point midseason, decided to flip the switch back to 'on', and realized he was behind the 8 ball on the recruiting trail. This is a gap season -- the roster reflects that; the recruiting class for next year reflects that.

yep, you are correct on Bohn vs. Tharp. Great memory of that time frame, which is almost 20 years ago!

I do know the coaches thought Hadley was a pain-in-the-ass in the locker room. And it sounds like they were very surprised when Eddie Lampkin left. I am also surprised Tad decided to return to get destroyed in the Big 12 this season.

I was told Tad had a much larger budget for NIL than he utilized. Again, not sure why. I hope to find out in the next few days the current status of NIL for basketball.

That 07 season was my super-senior year, and I have vivid memories of all of that craziness, lol. That stretch of 02-07 is my bread and butter.

You can find the details from a post I made in Barzil, but Hadley was only encouraged to leave after Louisville gave him stupid money that we couldn’t come anywhere close to matching, ultimately our staff told him to go cash them checks, and Eddie had one foot out the door and had no interest in being back in Boulder for another year.

Yep, that all tracks

I also want to bring up the point that everybody expected KJ to be good but not good enough to get drafted. No 6'1 guards get drafted these days. Yes they could have made arrangements in the spring portal but they didn't but makes sense why they weren't able to go in on anyone big for the fall class. I wonder if the Mason Faulkner grad transfer then bailing commitment has caused Tad to be weary he also loves to develop his PG's.

Also, it's expected after losing 3 draft picks to have a down year even 500 play after the year we had last year to build towards next year. I love our 25 class and think it will be great to see Ruff get his confidence back, and see Dak, Rancik, Smith, Diop develop into rotation players that we can retain for 25 to be even better.

I still think we will be way better by year end. I think Dak will be vastly improved on what he's shown in the first two games. I think we will have some upsets at home and it will be a fun year to follow. We will win games we shouldn't. This team hasn't shown quit early and I respect that.

I thought we agreed we would never discuss Kal Bay again…

AllBuffs hoops street cred question.......

Who sat through the whole Air Force game in Boulder during Patton's last season?

"THIS IS OUR HOUSE!"
