Games thread- MEN'S BBall opens season hosting Eastern Washington (Mon., 11/4/24; 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and No. Colorado (Friday, 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

We have a two point lead with 15 seconds left and they have the ball and your concern is trying to foul out another of their players?

Especially one shooting lights out behind the 3 line…why wouldn’t you do that?

Because with 15 seconds left and being on defense, clinging to a 2 point lead, it’s far too late in the game for such a strategy. Your sole focus is getting a stop on defense to win the game.

I’m glad Malone stepped up tonight since Jaki went ice cold shooting the rock and Dak was MIA. Ruffin and Hammond weren’t too hot either tonight.

Two more games before Michigan State.

That might be the last win of the year. Good thing Tad got his 300th. Now he will be able to retire at the end of the year with 300 wins.

Local (Thornton) kid, Brock Wisne #14, held his own last night. Malone was a bit much for him but it was fun watching him play. The Wisne's are friends of ours and an interesting "basketball" family: sister played at Indiana the last 5 years, Brock is at UNC, and they've got a sophomore who's kicking butt at Horizon and on the club circuit, but what makes it interesting is that parents were highly decorated athletes at Notre Dame in different sports. Mom an All-American (Olympic qualifying) swimmer and dad an NFL tackle.

So.... What I miss?

We look really short on talent this year.

Dak and Diop do not look like they have developed much.

Guard play is slow. Both Hammond and Ruffin seem to penetrate, hit a brick wall, pick up their dribble, then try to turn around and kick it out. Recipe for turnovers. And neither handle the ball all that well.

Jakimovic is a decent piece - but history suggests he is a less than average shooter - and it looked like that last night.

Baskin looks okay - but I really question whether he will be able to defend in the Big 12. I think that is going to be a problem for him.

Same with Malone. Has nice skills for a biggish man. He may struggle offensively against bigger, more athletic defenders. And I also question whether he will be able to defend in the Big 12. But doesn't look like as big of a liability as Baskin on defense.

Early in the year. And I'm usually wrong about this stuff. Hope that's the case here.

I hope you're wrong as well.
I am usually optimistic about Tad's teams, but this team looks like the worst Tad team I can rememeber. In the past, even on bad teams, there was always someone who you could point to and say that guy has a lot of potential . I just don't see it on this team. There are some decent pieces, but no leaders. I see a couple records getting broken this year and not the records you want to break.

Unfortunate timing that this will be our first year back in the Big 12. The program will probably catch a lot of sh*t from the other fan bases (more than normal because everyone now hates Colorado). People won’t remember we had three players drafted last year, with two in the first round.

Pretty spot on analysis. I would add that RJ really looks and acts like he could be the next stand out guard for us. Rancik has that look and attitude as well.
The most glaring thing I'll note is that this team has zero leadership, zero attitude and zero fire.

Yeah. I almost edited my post. RJ looks like a player who could take a big step forward, and gain a lot of minutes as the year progresses. I need to see more, but he almost looks like the best ball handler on the team. Ball handling is going to be a big problem for us. I didn't mention Rancik because I didn't see the first game, nor the first half of last night's game (as I was f*cking with my TV to add ESPN+ - I have too many LG products in my house - they don't work very well).

And I agree with your last comment as well. I would expect that to improve. Right now, this team seems like a bunch of dudes who were just thrown together on the same court.

Quickest fix (or at least gives a living chance towards end of season) is to leave Hammond out of starting line-up…and try to let RJ develop into a leader. Despite lacking playing time, he is a redshirt sophmore and has practiced w some real dudes the past couple of yrs. Hammond will bring the team down to his own, very limited on energy and leadership, level…that is just death by a 1000 cuts…and prefer not having to watch it.
