Games thread- MEN'S BBall opens season hosting Eastern Washington (Mon., 11/4/24; 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+) and No. Colorado (Friday, 7:00 PM MT; ESPN+)

yep, you are correct on Bohn vs. Tharp. Great memory of that time frame, which is almost 20 years ago!

I do know the coaches thought Hadley was a pain-in-the-ass in the locker room. And it sounds like they were very surprised when Eddie Lampkin left. I am also surprised Tad decided to return to get destroyed in the Big 12 this season.

I was told Tad had a much larger budget for NIL than he utilized. Again, not sure why. I hope to find out in the next few days the current status of NIL for basketball.
CU MBB has $1M give or take this year. Last year they got a bump to "make a run" and keep people happy, so maybe it got up to $2M.

this might be the hottest take I've ever made here, but I don't think Tad is good at recruiting PGs

he is way above average at finding combo guards/forwards then developing them into not only facilitators of the offense but plus scorers and defenders – Spencer, DWhite, Cody, KJ (who was undersized but played like a combo guard)

the main exceptions here are true PGs Kin and maybe KJ depending on your view, and they both fell into Tad's lap after another school fumbled things. these exceptions don't overshadow the numerous misses with XT, Eli, JH3, Deleon, Yaz, Peters...with players like Dom and Daylen being a notch above that group

takeaway being, Tad needs to improve his focus on evaluating solid true PG talent so we always have a Jr or Sr that can run the offense without being a massive turnover liability

He has had great point guards. My complaint is that Tad seems to only have 1, turns the team over him for 3-4 years, and doesn't focus on recruiting another high level one until the current QB is going to be gone the next year.

I would add he always overvalues the #2 PG as someone who can step in for the departing starter. This trend goes waaay back. Did he honestly think Hammond could become even half of what KJ was? C'mon!

I've heard Spencer talk about Tad recruiting him. He was recruited as a PG.

To be fair that means Tads had an elite pg in 11 of his 14 years as coach.

We also just last year switched to the 4 or 5 out system, which increases the need of multiple players who can break the opponent down of the dribble.

Tad also got 3 players under 6’ 4 that have a penetrating ability in 25 class so seems to be adjusting recruiting to that.

Tomlinson was fantastic

Meh, I don't think the offense is going to change recruiting style.

I was very underwhelmed by what was supposed to be the "5 out" offense last year. It really ended up being a high post offense (which isn't a far cry from what they've run in the past) with Lampkin in the high post, which I guess is a variant of the four out, but I really wanted to see a true 5-out with flair screens, slip screens, back screens, and back cuts. But, IMO, you've got to execute that in the first 1-2 options and quickly when you get down the court or it doesn't work, and I just don't see Tad operating that way, he's too deliberate.

I hear you I think a part of that was our roster, having Lampkin and this year Malone impact that. Having said that I do think Tristane, Cody, and even LOB had the ability to catch and drive from the 3 point line last year and make plays in the lane. We just had a lot of lineups with 4 players over 6'6 last year.

I think with this 25 class we will have more several guard lineups than previous doing similar things if not even more so!
