Howell: Buffs to hire Kurt Roper as new QB Coach

Will Muschamp explains why he fired Kurt Roper
It wasn’t a conversation he wanted to have, South Carolina football coach Will Muschamp said.
He hired Kurt Roper twice. At one point, he said if he’d brought in Kurt Roper when he arrived at Florida, things wouldn’t have ended so badly in Gainesville. But after the 2017 regular season with the Gamecocks, he parted ways with the man who ran his offense.
“It wasn’t a fun conversation,” Muschamp said. “He’s a guy I have tremendous respect for. He’s an outstanding football coach and an outstanding person.”

Well, he is Peyton’s brother and Archie’s son. It’s a pretty good bet there are some genetics at work there.
Some credit to be given that he was a GA in Tennesse when Peyton was there, and then when Cutcliffe went to Ole Miss he brought Roper with. The Mannings liked Cutcliffe and Roper enough to have Eli play there.

If we're going to give Peyton and Archie the kudos for Eli's success, then we acknowledge that they gave Roper a stamp of approval.

I don't think Eli's success is the end all be all, but it's only possibly a positive for Roper, but just a small positive.

Or...just spitballing here, Archie was the most recognized football player ever to come out of out of Ole Miss and brother Peyton was the only Manning who did not attend school in Oxford, MS.

This hire looks to be about as high up the possible food chain as possible for MM. Solid positional coaching, young enough guy that he has energy and desire to recruit. Looking at his 24/7 profile and other information says he is a better recruiter than most on the current staff, and he mentions that his areas of focus previously were in Texas and California. He is all over top 4* QB's all the time, and has helped with other recruiting areas. I would say that I am very happy with what has happened thus far with the staff, and the cherry on top will be what is done with the 10th assistant. Lindgren leaving was a PLUS, Chiv as playcaller is a PLUS, Roper is a PLUS, Herm Edwards at ASU is a PLUS for us, the Arizona dumpster fire is a PLUS, Darnold and Rosen to the NFL is a PLUS, so we are seeing many positives for our Buffs. If MM is fully engaged and passionate to win this year because the Tumpkin stuff is behind him, then let's roll.

Has Roper helped at the Manning Passing Academy? This could really be a big deal for Montez and the rest of the QB's!

Mrs. Roper is probably pretty psyched....

There still some fat grease streaks on that perspective, until Jeffcoat and Bernardi are replaced with solid recruiters and position coaches. But I agree, some stuff could go in our favor. The dead weight is hampering the **** out of real progress.

I went to school with a Randy Roper once. I wonder if they’re related?

As is the case with all coaches, Roper will also spend a lot of his time recruiting, and, in fact, has "hit the ground running" with recruiting this week, he said.
Although he has worked almost his entire career in the southeast, Roper has done a lot of recruiting in the areas CU targets most: Southern California, Texas, Arizona and Colorado.
"At Duke, you have to be a national recruiter and quarterbacks they end up anywhere in the country," he said. "I signed kids out of Phoenix, signed kids out of LA, out of Dallas.
"Recruiting is about relationships. It's more hard work than it is anything else. If you're willing to work at it, you have a great place to sell here (at CU) and people are going to want to come."
Roper now knows that first hand. He was sold on the Buffs and sold on Boulder.
