Howell: Buffs to hire Kurt Roper as new QB Coach

When Chiv leaves, I’ll spill the beans you can either take buffoon back now or later. Ha!!

I bet you think RG didn’t force the Baer decision either.

Old topic.
That’s a very convenient take. Basically all the good hires/fires were forced by RG and the miscues orchestrated by MM. crazy how that works out when you have an axe to grind with a guy.

The firings do not seem like a huge deal to me, comes with the territory of being an assistant coach.

My main question is more how he will recruit QBs. At the very least, he needs to be able to recruit a good QB every year he is here. Given Ty Evans was offered by South Carolina, I would guess he is at the top of the board. Makes it pretty easy to judge success in that regard.

And let’s see him impact in Montez’s footwork, decision making, reads, ability to throw deep. And Lytles’s development and sling shot motion.

He may be great at these aspects

If this guy can get Montez fixed, we’re in for a great season and next two years. I don’t really care about his recruiting so long as he is a QB whisperer. Montez just has so much potential. He could really take this team to a whole new level with the right coaching.

Transitions are always acceptable. Happens to most all. Just think there are possible questions about his recent
career trajectory.
I would agree. However, it doesn’t seem out of the question that an opportunity to have less responsibilities and just focus on what he enjoys coaching may be possible. My son has a QB coach that spent three decades college position coaching, then head coaching them on to the NFL. He now enjoys coaching kids and traveling. Maybe this is a breath of fresh air after coordinator responsibilities

I agree, if the OL and defense get fixed.

I can't see why anybody would be excited about this hire.

Perhaps because Cutcliffe has a history of developing QBs at a college level, Roper is a disciple and has had success with QBs in the past. Also, Montez is an incredible physical talent who, with the right coaching, could be one of the best Buff QBs in recent memory. One could assume Roper also gives MM some piece of mind on the offensive side with two young guys taking over.

I don't see how he isn't a total upgrade from Lindgren, as a QB coach. He's pretty well respected for that, and that trumps everything else at this point. Raw talent is there, but I believe both Montez and Lytle will need some serious refinement.

I just hope that Roper helps Montez reach his potential. My vision scope on the Buffs doesn't go beyond a year or two.

With Utah naming Anderson Associate Head Coach", I'd expect a similar moniker be hung on Roper if he joins.

I don't think anyone is excited...but many think it's a solid hire. Proof is in the pudding...if he can take Montez to the level his physical gifts indicate he can go, then watch out PAC12.

Plenty of people are excited because they use their brain. That doesn't mean there aren't concerns about that hire though.

Suggestions for Roper’s list of items to fix Montez:

- Footwork
- Finess
- Frat signals
Biggest issue is helping him grow up a bit with maturity and as a leader. If he reaches him in those areas, the sky's the limit.
