Howell: Buffs to hire Kurt Roper as new QB Coach

Some help with situational awareness would also be beneficial. No more sliding two yards short of the first down.

It really is strange. MM has identified that his ability to remain employed is finally based on winning immediately. I think this hire demonstrates that. But he leaves his biggest hole from his whole tenure unaddressed. Lack of line players at a PAC 12 size and athleticism. There are days that this program confuses me.

To his credit, Roper had a hand in developing Eli Manning, Thad Lewis, Sean Renfree and Jake Bentley. We also shouldn't overlook the fact he was able to help Arian Foster (got screwed over by coming back but was a 2nd round prospect his junior year) and Montario Hardesty (2nd round by Browns, 2010) receive high draft grades. Clearly the man knows how to coach and get the best out of his respective position players.

The more I read about it, the more I think Roper is a great hire. He is probably not going to recruit NTs for us, but he should recruit some good qbs. If we can land Ty Evans that will be a huge step for our program. If he can help Montez develop, that will be huge too. Qb is critical to this offense.
The pressure is still on MMac and RG to bring in a stud recruiter with the next hire at a minimum. Ideally like many others I hope he brings in a great recruiter with the 10th spot and upgrades a couple other spots.
Unfortunately, our thinking and talking about it won't make it happen.

Done deal. I like what he brings to the table. I just hope all the coaches get along, thats key.

I really cannot complain about the hire. I think he fits just what CU needs, P5 experience as OC to add a little leaven to what a first time OC is going to bake, a guy with a solid QB coaching experience. If he can recruit, it is a solid upgrade.

If he can take Montez up a couple of notches, continue developing the rest of the QBs on the roster and help out with recruiting in Houston and with future QB commits, I'll be happy.

Aren't most QB coaches also the OC for their teams?

My opinion is that if a QB coach isn't also the OC, he better give recruiting a whirl. Your post read to me like you were fine with Roper giving a Bernardi/Jeffcoat effort in the name of developing QBs. I think there's a happy medium between being a good coach and at least trying in recruiting.
No

I was really disappointed in Montez’ lack of development. Even though he had some extremely important game experience, he showed no improvement as the starter. Now, couple that with the potential we have among the QB corps, I now realize how important a good, dedicated QB coach is to this program.

Not only is the development of our starter important, having the next guy prepared and ready to step in is a prime ingredient in sustainable winning. Montez’ lack of development was a big factor in last season’s disappointing results. Hopefully Roper will not only develop Montez but will build a pipeline where we are reloading the QB position and not rebuilding it when the next guy steps in.

About time we have a coach dedicated only to QBs not like Lindgren calling the plays as well. In the Pac-12, the QB seems more essential than during the Big 12 days. Someone to get into Montez's face on the bench if he will be on the sideline.

And he helped develop Eli Manning...let that sink in.

I'm feeling real good about next season due to the coaching turnover in the South and USC looking for a new QB for next season. Going to be interesting to see where the preseason predictions place CU.

I’m ok with the hire. I’m not ok with anyone giving credit to him for Eli. He was destined to be the number one pick and would have been with Cody Hawkins as his qb coach. It’s no diff then giving any rb coach credit. They can maybe improve pass blocking but they aren’t cultivating god given strength/speed/vision.

Please describe Eli's god given football talents. No fair citing his color blindness.

Great stuff from Roper in here.

I love that he doesn't believe in "game managers" at QB, that they have to be playmakers. And I love that he stresses mental toughness as the #1 trait in playing the position (having "it", whatever "it" is).
