Kwahn Drake to be named new DL coach

I actually like this guy even if he doesn't really fit what I wanted, hopefully it works out and MacIntyre found a gem. His DL's advanced stats at Tulane are somewhat encouraging and I like his personality and focus on techniques based on the Mic'd up video. Getting promoted after one year at EIU also speaks well of him, I guess.

“Drake spent the 2016 season as an offensive analyst for Memphis under head coach Mike Norvell. Memphis posted an 8-5 record on the season playing in the Boca Raton Bowl.

Prior to that Drake coached for two seasons as the defensive line coach at Tulane under head coach Curtis Johnson. His defensive line group helped the Green Wave rank 12th in the FBS in tackles for loss per game during the 2015 season.”

He must come highly recommended because he doesn’t have much experience to go off of.

Looks like his recruiting connections would all be in Louisiana.

From EIU

"A respected New Orleans recruiter, Drake coached two seasons as the defensive line coach at St. Augustine High in New Orleans helping the school win back-to-back District Championships. He served as the program's recruiting coordinator and academic advisor helping 25 players sign NCAA Division I football scholarships. He coached the 2009 season as the defensive line coach at St. James (La.) High School.

A 2009 graduate of Nicholls State, Drake began his coaching career as a student-assistant at his alma mater working with the defensive line and on scouting reports. He earned his master's degree from Tulane in 2013. "

Well there are usually a lot of damn good D-Lineman to recruit down there normally.

Welcome Coach!

I'm going to expect some unknown, under the radar, DL to sign next month for 2018, from somewhere in the Houston to Florida panhandle area.

This recruiting ties talk is crazy. Coaches move around. They get promoted. If they can recruit, they can recruit. Main thing is establishing a relationship in an area. There is plenty of relationships in Cali. Now they just need a recruiter that can walk in a house and talk to players and sell a vision. Watching this guy and hearing a little about him, he has the energy and youth I want in a DL coach. That sort of guy needs to connect with younger guys. This guy will. Nice to get some youth instead of another old dude like Jeffcoat that has coached forever but can't recruit and gets average results. Welcome, Coach Drake.

Still, MacIntyre's hires are rarely encouraging and fail to respect our natural footprint, but it is what it is.
I'm no expert on the stats, but I think Louisiana may be a better area to recruit DL than CU's current footprint. Being able to recruit Louisiana may also translate to Texas DL recruiting/leads. CU has plenty of football alumni from Louisiana, so it's not technically out of our footprint. I thought the same at first but then gave it some time and I'm not upset about the recruiting aspect of the hire. Coming from FBS/non P5 is where my issue lies.

St. Augustine, according to wikipedia, has had some good recent football talent in the NFL:
Honey Badger
Leonard Fournette
Benjarvus Green-Ellis
Lorenzo Doss
Trai Turner

He may have been there during Doss and Fournette.

Welcome Coach!
He’ll be competing with Eddie O and Karl Dunbar for the good ones, latter for 3-4 players. He better have chops.

Welcome coach. The dude is obviously rapidly rising in the coaching ranks, so I hope he continues that trend here.

Coming from FBS/non P5 is where my issue lies.
I wonder what Texas Tech fans said when they hired Chev from Riverside Community College?

If young/dynamic is what you are looking for, there's a lot of boxes to check, but CU is not hiring an up-and-comer, young/dynamic guy from a P5 program. No matter what.

Boulder is maybe the most lily-white town in college football. Another black on staff will be nice when black players are considering CU (someone will say that's crap - but it's true) Seems to have good energy and personality. Wishing him well
