Mark Kennedy new, but soon to be old CU President - Official CU president Thread

I was too pissed off earlier to make this point, but this is my position. I could completely overlook the "fit" concerns with him if there was a stellar CV, but his CV to me is unimpressive.

Also, rumor is that a bunch of grad students egged the regents' cars this afternoon.
If that is true, this is just becoming embarrassing all around

It's nice that the Regent can't even even be bothered to make it to every forum

An open letter to the University of Colorado Community from Presidential Finalist Mark Kennedy
Dear Members of the University of Colorado Community,

I am honored and humbled that the Board of Regents has named me as finalist for the CU presidency and I look forward to visiting each campus to meet as many of you as possible. I am excited about the prospect of working together to elevate the positive impact and reputation of CU.

The heart of a university is its students, faculty, staff, and the communities and state that it serves. CU’s four campuses have a history of excellence, they advance research and learning in countless ways, and they have produced strong leaders. It would be a privilege to join you in advancing the vital role that the university plays in the continued success of Colorado and the nation.

Some of you have voiced concern about my voting record when I served in Congress more than a decade ago. While in Congress, I cast perhaps 4,000 votes, many on difficult topics. I am happy to address votes as to how they would impact my actions and decisions as president. On some, the societal consensus has changed over the past decade-plus, as has my own thinking.

Like many friends and colleagues on both sides of the aisle in Congress, my position on marriage has evolved. Would I vote the same way today? No. My record in supporting the LGBTQ+ community reflects a deep respect for the dignity of each individual. Students, faculty, staff and members of our community will have my full support and respect no matter who they love or how they identify. I am committed to be a leader for all.

At the University of North Dakota, I issued an anti-discrimination and harassment policy covering sexual orientation and gender identity as strong as similar policies at CU. At UND, we have attracted talented LGBTQ+ individuals to leadership roles and expanded programming in support of our LGBTQ+ students, faculty and staff. I will ensure that senior university leaders share my commitment to nondiscrimination and the benefits of diversity.

Let me also note that I support shared governance and academic freedom issues that leave the authority for research activities with the campuses.

I am passionate about advancing diversity and inclusion in higher education. Inclusion is one of UND’s key goals, and I pledge to foster a welcoming, safe and inclusive environment at CU and to keep CU a forum for the free exchange of ideas. I know you share these commitments, and I would make them foundations of my presidency if appointed to serve at CU.

I will be on each campus the week of April 22 for open forums and to meet you. Please attend these forums, bring your questions and concerns, and share your hopes and aspirations for the University of Colorado. I am excited to meet you.

Sincerely,

Mark R. Kennedy

Vetting process = Benson pretty much picking his successor through the cover of a search firm and the Regents knowing where their bread is buttered

This is false and not how how the process was conducted. Nice assumption, though.

I would have preferred that he address the issues of alumni/donor disenfranchisement, though. His voting record in congress is a straw man.

Oh great. He’s wishy washy.

I would have preferred that he address the issues of alumni/donor disenfranchisement, though. His voting record in congress is a straw man.
Not a straw man. Something he needed to properly answer with how (if at all) those views & votes would relate to how he’d govern CU.

Once satisfactorily addressed, we can get down to brass tacks. How will he be at raising money, growing CU, fiscal responsibility, and influencing the state’s political bodies to CU’s benefit? That is the job, mostly.

That’s not going to change any minds of people who already have him pegged as a gay bashing bigoted knuckle dragging Neanderthal, but it does give me a little confidence that he will address issues as opposed to remaining silent.

He actually addressed it head-on and did not use your copout stance from yesterday, so I applaud him. I am glad he willing to discuss his votes in Congress that some view as irrelevant for some odd reason.

I don’t know how pointing out that his votes in Congress are irrelevant to his ability to be University President is somehow a copout, but whatever. I’m glad he addressed it and I hope it’s behind us.

“Did not your copout stance yesterday”

I don’t know what that means, but I applaud him as well.

That’s pretty much where I am on this, too. His votes don’t make him “anti-LGBT” or a bigot. It is possible to oppose gay marriage without hating gay people. I think a lot of people are unable to make that distinction. They’re irrelevant to the position of University President anyway.

BUT, there are a lot of red flags on this guy.

This post where you danced around it and did not say the vote was wrong, which he was able to do quite concisely. Good for him.

I assume he uses his stint in Congress to bolster his resume, including for this job, so not sure why his voting record is irrelevant.

I don’t know why my opinion on whether the vote was wrong or not is relevant to the conversation, but alrighty then.

It goes to the larger point of its relevancy to his views on LGBTQ rights. But as I said, his explanation is straightforward and appreciated.

It's good to see that he explained his voting past. People can evolve. I'm at a loss why people don't think his voting record matters.

I'm still underwhelmed by the hire.
I’m never concerned when my boss takes an active stance against my freedoms. I still
Think I’ll get a fair shake.

Beliefs have no impact on performance.
