MBB - Change & Commitment for 2023-24

This is a big loss on the floor and it seemed like he was a really good guy off the floor as well

He was a difference maker on defense. Ridiculous thing is that he looked to be just on the verge of becoming more comfortable on offense as well. Wouldn't have surprised me if he had become a guy who regularly contributed double digit scoring next season.

Just remember, according to advanced metrics, he was one of our three worst players.

He is still learning to be a D1 big man.

He does a lot that doesn't show up in statistical numbers like discourage guys from driving the lane and altering shots.

His offensive numbers were not good but think of if he scores a couple more follows a game and one or two buckets on teammates driving and dropping him the ball and you then have a guy scoring double figures with a high shooting percentage.

We also lost his best offensive games. Not sure why, but maybe spacing issues that hurt the offense of others.
 
This shocks me. Maybe the last guy I would have thought would leave. Too much abuse from fans/no-nothings?

He is able to change his mind, right - is there a deadline on that?

Oh no! Next year was fixing to be special. Let’s hope things stabilize and we don’t lose our two best to the NBA. This year was rough. That kind of year makes jumping ship more desirable.

And Lovering's dad tweeted about how some CU fans yelled at him and his son as they were having breakfast about how much LL sucks. I'd post the tweet but it appears he deleted his account.

I critiqued LL in the context of his play, nothing more or less.
I do not even rip on Clifford like everyone else.
I just felt his game was still weak

If we get the right big man to transfer in and don't lose anyone unexpected, then next year figures to be more special than it would have been with LL

My big fear is I don't know where we get the defense now. LL was going to be the anchor that allowed mediocre defenders to look better. Suddenly we're looking at a setup where people are going to have to REALLY buy in next year for our D to be where it needs.

and we will be playing big minutes to a true frosh too. Rare to see those guys lock in to the level Tad wants.
 
This is a nice perspective on an otherwise pissy day on the BB front. (the scores they show - like .932 - are from 247):

"The top signing from the Buffs’ 2022 class was 6-foot-10 center Joe Hurlbut, who didn’t play this season but does possess quite a bit of promise, as demonstrated by his 3-Star, 0.932 composite ranking. He’s the 12th-highest-rated basketball recruit in program history, and for the sake of comparison, Tyler Bey ranks 13th, Jabari Walker ranks 14th, and Spencer Dinwiddie ranks 17th.

Also, although he’s been outshined by Cody Williams, Asane Diop is another highly recruited player (4-Star, 0.959 composite score) in the 2023 class that’s headed to CU. Diop is a 6-foot center from Denver, who was targeted by more respected programs like Arkansas, Auburn, Baylor, Kansas State, Memphis, and Seton Hall, but chose to stay home, where he’ll become the Buffaloes’ eighth-highest-rated recruit in program history.

Four out of the top eight on the roster would mean that KJ and QA are still on the team next year. Interesting that he didn't say five out the top ten and include Nique.
 
For the record, the way I'd construct a college roster (12 players):

4 (1/3) guys who have a primary ball handler skill set. They may not all have a PG mentality, but they all have the skills.

4 (1/3) guys we'd call a wing. Good handle as a secondary ball handler. Multiple scorer (jump shots and off the bounce). Needs to give some weakside & loose ball rebounding while also giving good perimeter defense.

4 (1/3) guys who have the size to provide post defense. I prefer these be big forwards. Bey, Battey, Walker types who can score from the block or the arc while being able to defend/switch on anyone. If there's an opportunity to sign a Center who has the feet to defend on the perimeter and the stroke to extend the defense, you absolutely sign him and apply him against these numbers.

Edit: 13th scholarship can go wherever.

PG - 2 with KJ & JH3. Hoping this number is actually at 3 since RJ mostly played PG as a HS senior.

Post - 2 with Hurlburt and Diop. I think we can probably call this 3 with Hadley, but he needs to add 15 lbs of bulk this offseason to be able to play his game and hold up against taller players.

Wing - 5 with TDS, LOB, Ruffin, Williams and Anderson. This goes to 7 if RJ doesn't display PG skills and Hadley remains too undersized to guard, box & score over a legit big. Could reduce if those guys do what I hope, TDS and/or LOB bulk up to 235-240, and/or Williams demonstrates PG skills.

My suspicion is that we'll add a Post and a Wing with the 2 open scholarships.

If Knecht is the wing, then Ike better be the post. That would be a very good roster.
 
Does anyone really think KJ is going to get drafted?

I guess I feel like TDS might, but KJ has no chance.
 
Just pondering Lawson's decision to transfer, is there any thought that Hurlbert was looking better than him in practice and he was expecting to be replaced in the starting lineup?

I don't think so. Very different players. My impression was that they were seen as complementary. LL had said that he would never be the shooter Hurlburt is, but Hurlburt was never expected to have the paint presence & shot disruption of LL.

I believe Tad was excited about the prospect of playing LL at the 5 with Hurlburt at the 4 and having a lot more flexibility in the front court as Diop could sub for either and guys like Hadley, LOB and TDS could all give small-ball options for stretches.

Without LL, we seem locked into the following similar lineups:

2G, 2W, 1F
or
1G, 2W, 2F

I don't think we will have a C type lineup unless we sign a guy like Ike from the portal (which would bring that 2-3 zone that was so effective this year back into play).

Okay, only one more LL question, because if he wasn't worried about Hurlburt, I'm more confused.

Is it possible that he heard about Ike leaving Wyo and wants to go 'home'?

I'm just trying to make sense of it.

He got sh!t on constantly by fans and unlike some others on the roster this year, gave everything he had for the cause. Wants to go somewhere where he's appreciated. End of story.
