Offensively inept

Something that needs to happen is for Larry Scott and the Pac-12 officers to get off their asses to sign a B1G and Big 12 challenges as annual things. It had been very close to happening in the past and needs to become a thing.

I just quickly looked, and I can't find any contractual information for the ACC/B1G challenge. So, I'm surprised that you say a PAC/B1G challenge was close to happening. Can you expand?

But yeah, I think we all agree that a PAC/Big12 challenge should have been happening for years. Hope you're right that it was close to being agreed to in the past.

We actually had an announcement that Michigan was on the schedule as part of a B1G challenge that would happen as a break from conference play late in the season. Then they walked it back, never to be mentioned again. Maybe 5-7 years ago now?

Crazy they scored 22 and 59 points per half
I didn't think our offense was poorly run in the 1st half. Trees played great defense, but we worked to open shots and FT attempts. Just didn't make a damn thing. 2nd half was just as ridiculous with our shooting, but the other way. I suppose that in the grand scheme of things it ended up going in the books as an above average shooting night.

And Stanford made the same percentage half to half. Weird game

If we aren't hitting 3s, our offense is awful. We are one of those live by the three die by the three teams at this point.

That's pretty much every team in the country.

Today was weird. Other teams have recently been playing by the metrics book and forcing us into the mid range. Bey's been killing them for it. Stanford didn't do that and just manned up HAM and also doubled Bey in the post. Stayed on our shooters, though.

You note both offense and defense run either team, but it's seems defense is always more noticeable then offense, at least for me. CU defense is remarkable, do a good job keeping up man-to-man, I don't care for when Battey, el al, try to set the pick on the guard, because he's not that quick and can't get back in time to defend under basket. Stanford centers were excellent at this. So was their defense. They stymied CU the first half and adding almost 80% shooting the first part of the 1st half. Could tell CU and Boyle were flustered. Cal seemed to figure out how to slow CU as well. Add to this poor shooting and horrible free throw shooting, it didn't bode well. Usually on an intense defense from the opponents, they get into the bonus situation and free-throws will catch you up or at least keep up the scoring. When you're missing the first FT every time, not going to work. Stanford was amazing and deserves credit. But everything changed with 0.2 sec left in the 1st half.

We've seen Rick Randall and crew before, and while he's a very chatty guy (guy in front of me gets to know all the refs, and had a long chat with him during a time out). I recall his calls and that of his crew to be either very inconsistent or very technical. . like intentionally trying to catch that foul no one else see or getting attention for the call. But as a 35+ year soccer official I understand not all calls have to be "right" but "acceptable" to the discerning objective fan. But with the visiting team, who ratings suggest they shouldn't win at the league leader's home court, and they ahead by 6 pts, the first half is closing in seconds, trying to get that last shot off, and it's 3, and a home team defender tries to block. . even if there's body contact or hand/arm contact. . you . . let . . it . . go. Visiting coach may be upset as his players, but to make this call under these circumstances. . home coach/team/fans frustrated with surprising being behind. . with 0.2 second left. . and even the replay and the TV announcers say there was no contact/no foul. . . people are going to be upset. Boyle isn't afraid to get a ref's ear, but he seems to know when to do it, and when to stop, and he was livid.(we sit next the CU team 2nd row on the end) and he was livid! I didn't see the technical call, but was shocked when #3 got 5 shots and made them all. I wasn't sure Randall was going to exit the arena easily, but had police escort.

2nd half, I figured Randall would start on the opposite side from teams, but instead started next to the CU team. I thought this odd, since when a ref T's up a ref, policy says he moves to the opposite side in rotation to avoid further dissent. But then I though, hey, good stratedy, Boyle's sitting on a T and a 2nd gets him ejected, so not much promise of further comments. But Randall and his team, especially the dark haired ref started making the same ticky-tacky phantom calls. One, CU on defense, Bey's opponent got away from him and streaked to under the basket and Bey kind of grabbed his arm. . didn't have the ball nor would of been open for a pass, but Randall called this. . an "off the ball ticky-tacky contact" which did not restrict the players movement, just a reaction to reach out and try to grab his arm. Classic Randall apparently. So why we all have issues with refs, it's never as serious or consequential as this crew. A coach should have a right to 1st refusal on a ref crew that behaves like this one did. Randall gave Stanford 5 pts at half, and expanded their lead to 11. Overcoming the great Stanford defense and offense, turned into overcoming the 6th man. . the referees as well.

The guy who knows the refs, says he's always like this. . excessive and mystery calls. On the way home I googled "Rick Randall" and in 2013 the NCAA disciplined him for a blown call in the final secons of the Wichita State vs So. Ill. game calling of all things. . "goal tending" which gave So. Ill the win of 2 pts, and review showed the call was blatantly wrong Another incident a few years ago in Florida, the coaches complained to NCAA that his crew were calling so many ticky-tacky calls the game was one of the longest on record. He's been around a long time, but can't understand why he continues. The NCAA has referee assessors usually at every game and review video of a game, especially ones that have controversial calls. . . remember the K-state - Kansas game, where fight broke out. The KU guy that started, picked up a chair and was going to slam it into a prone KSU fan, but a coach grabbed his arm. . only got 10 game suspension, just enough to still play in tournament and playoffs???

On a follow-up we saw the Battey-de Silva injury under the basket. I commented to my friend, "he's unconscious!" as I could see his face 10 ft away. CU trainer did a good job of covering up the blood, but Battey saw it, and broke down. He was an emotional mess the whole game, but glad he came back and played. Nobody plays with a bigger heart then this kid. A fan favorite. Comes over and fist-bumps our fans before the game.

I'm almost "surprised" the Buffs are soley in 1st place in the league. Watching these teams play CU live and on TV, the league has really gotten talented. Picking only 2 from the league for the NCAA tourney in the past was always a reasonable complaint. This season it would be a crime. Perennial power Washington is at the bottom, followed by OSU, which beat CU at home and just beat 2nd place Oregon. This is a talented league. But of course Arizona 3rd in the league, and ranked ahead of CU in the polls, will get a pick.
