I personally think USC is the better job, but it’s close enough that I wouldn’t criticize anyone who likes Penn State better. The lifestyle for the coaches at each place is so vastly different, and the quality of the job is so close, that this is one debate where a coach’s personal taste (happy valley versus L.A.) is probably a significant factor. Quality of management (the university president, the AD, the boosters) is even more significant.

I think the dysfunctionality of USC counteracts all of that-there's no leadership there. Given the clown they just hired as their new AD, I'd argue its probably gotten worse. I'll say this on this-If you put me in James Franklin's shoes and I get an offer from USC, I'm saying no. Would it surprise me if he takes that job? Not one bit.

Does being 4th in the initial CFP rankings and sitting behind a division rival they have yet to play tell me they can win a title? Not necessarily. It tells me PSU is a very good team this year, but he’s 3-8 combined against Michigan and tOSU and has never beat them both in a season. Let me reiterate - PSU is very good, but let’s wait until we see them win in Columbus in a few weeks before declaring them title contenders.

If I asked you which program would have a better shot at winning the most conference titles over the next decade, do you really think it’s PSU?

Fair enough, and no. About the only place PSU has an advantage is leadership.

Open Jobs:

Rutgers- Chris Ash is out (h/t dwyermj), Nunzio Campanile is interim. No firm news on the new Capo dei capi, or whether Campianile will be consigliere, but rumors abound Greg Schiano left the Pats last March to muscle his way back to New Brunswick (or is it Camden?), honestly, who cares where it is, it is still NJ. Chris Ash reportedly still alive and well. Joe Moorhead, Miss. St. HC getting some mention. UPDATE: Schiano looks to be the man in Piscataway. Rumors a deal is in the works are flying.

Florida State- Willie Taggert out after less than two years. (h/t vinniew_11). That was a big one. Kirk Herbstreit drops a nuke on FSU, then pees on it to put out the fire. See ahoelsken's post above. So, who's it gonna be? FSU has spent roughly $30M (h/t sinkratz) on coaches over thelast couple of years...that is a lot of oranges to sell. Odell Haggins, longtime FSU AC takes over as interim. UPDATE: Bob Stoops not interested in FSU job. Likes his part-time gig in the Arena league, or whatever it is he is doing now. FSU AD wants to have man in place by season's end. That would limit the pool quite a bit, I would think.

Possibles:

Harbaugh- UM is a mess. After tOSU dismantles them, it will likely be curtains for Jimbo. UPDATE Rumors of an exit strategy by Jimbo, then a strongly worded "I am staying" letter from Jimbo to player's parents. Almost as good as an indicator he is going as the dreaded AD vote of confidence. The win over ND is a nice scalp for Jimbo's wall.

Charlie Strong- Severe downward trajectory. Off to a bad start for an embattled HC.

Derek Mason- below .400 at Vandy in year six. UPDATE Rumors swirl, the Vandy AD is unhappy, despite a nice upset of Mizzou. Jeff Fisher, Dave Aranda, Willie Fritz, Ken Numaatoilolonamaalolliteamnaaomommlo, and last but not least, MikMac himself, getting some early mention.

Clay Helton- Sitting at about .640, not a good look for the plastic SoCal fan. UPDATE: Swann out, Mike Bohn in as AD. Bret McMurphy reproting Urban Meyer is target numero uno. Pete Thamel says look at James Franklin, and if not him, then: Bob Stoops, Kyle Whittingham, Matt Rhule, PJ Fleck and a cast of thousands. This one will be big. I wonder how Bohn will screw it up. And of course, Lane Kiffin has expressed interest...in the HC job, not some random coed, although you never know. UPDATE: Some reports Bohn to USC as unwinding. Bohn wants Urban, Pres. Folt does not. Reports that other AD's said no when they were told they could not hire Urban. Pete Thamel reports Bohn will likely come anyway. I agree, he has always been a windsock. He will do as he is told, which is why SC will end up with him. My guess as to the SC hire is not novel, it is Jack Del Rio. Let me be the first, I think, to nickname him, Jack The River.

Matt Luke- Ole Miss always presumes their team should be more than it is, but even by reasonable standards, Luke is underachieving.

Mike Bobo- CSU may not be able to afford to let him go yet. When you look at his overall record, it isn't that bad by CSU standards. But the losses to the flagship, AFA, Boise and Wyoming weigh heavily. Wins at UNM, UNLV and Fresno could save Bobo, yet. 4-5.

Mike Gundy- Fans getting picky. A .670 HC not good enough anymore.

Chad Morris- Arky making noise about somehow avoiding Bielema's buyout, harbinger of firing Morris with the illusory "found money"?


Other News:

Show me the Money- Cali leads the way to player pay, starting 2023. Hapless NCAA and Conferences clutch pearls.

Sheriron Jones- The well-traveled QB gets caught in a solo routine. CU dodged a bullet. (h/t sewallbeach)

Arizona- Gets defensive about its DC and fires him, and one defensive AC. (h/t Jens).

USC- hires Mike Bohn as AD (h/t ZKobalt), 11 other P12 programs chuckling uncontrollably.

Minnesota- PJ Fleck extended for 7 years, kNU in mourning.

Indiana- Tom Allen negotiating a raise, and presumably, an extension. kNU mourns more.

If Chad Morris gets canned at Ark, hire him as OC at CU?
 
Hiring Morris at this point in his career is merely paying for the name. I would be very wary of doing that right now.

Here’s my thought. He likely is not cut out for P5. SMU is probably his kind of school, but will he get an opp to go back to G5 immediately if fired?

I think he is a good OC. Has experience with DT QBs. Knows Texas, good connections, can recruit.

Just spitballing possibilities.
 
I think it completely depends on how you define a better job. Money, tradition, fan/admin/booster support and expectations, location for personal reasons, location for recruiting reasons, conference affiliation, divisional opponents, ease of winning big, etc. I don't think people should look at history when determining what's a better job in 2020 and beyond.

1. Money - All big time programs are going to be about equal when it comes to this = Wash
2. Tradition - Shockingly similar win % over the last 50 years (.723 for SC and .731 for PSU), SC has a lot more Nattys but if you only go back 40 years, it's 2-1 in favor of SC. Bowl records are almost exactly even, and conference/division titles are heavily in favor of SC. = If you're staying semi recent, this is a wash, IMO, maybe a slight lean to USC
3. Fan/Admin/Booster Support and Expectations = Lower expectations at PSU probably. Fan support definitely goes to PSU = Edge is PSU
4. Location for Personal Reasons = Who knows, but LA is likely more desirable for most people, outside of population and cost of living = Wash
5. Location for Recruiting Reasons = USC is the no brainer, although PSU recruits nationally and that area of the country isn't devoid of talent at all = USC
6. Conference Affiliation = For monetary purposes, PSU by a mile.
7. Divisional opponents = USC by a mile
8. Ease of winning big = USC due to the easier division and recruiting advantages

I think the biggest ones for being considered a better job are 5, 3, 7, 8, 6 - in that order - which adds up to a 3-2 advantage for USC.

The historical data tells some of the story, but what about each schools current trajectory? Where do you weigh the AD as a whole?

At these types of programs, I weigh the AD as a secondary concern if the football team is elite. Hire the right coach at USC and Mike Bohn is viewed as a God. Maybe I'm naive, but an elite football program makes life extremely easy for the entire AD.

The AD has to be looked at but a good question to ask is who really calls the shots. At PSU as long as he is winning Franklin will be running his own show. The AD will officially be his boss but he will be the decision maker, even the university administration isn't going to argue with him. Remember that this is what allowed JoPa to keep hands off Sandusky instead of him being dealt with.

At SC the power situation is much more fluid. You have donors with influence, you have administrators with influence. Bohn is the ultimate yes man but he will do the bidding of those who hired him. This can all change every time one of the chairs above the HFBC gets shuffled.

I am wary of hiring any coach immediately after a disastrous tenure. A year or two seems to help them refocus.
