Official 2025 Opening Week - Georgia Tech Thread

I agree. I would also point out that this improves with film study and live reps (read, recognition, fits and reaction). Our LBs have a lot of room to get better quickly and they should. The ultimate upside is much higher than what we had in 2024, which was exploitable and limited Livingston in what he could game plan or call.
Yes, but that relies on LB coaching too, so we’ll see I guess.
It was hardly a surprise that this position group was the weakest link in terms of preparedness, even if on paper going in they looked like a strength.

There's a good point here underneath the rose colored glasses. Basically, if the QB and offense had performed to its capabilities on Friday the defense was doing enough & with more rest/ GT playing from behind and passing more the D would have done enough to get the win (maybe a comfortable win).
This is why I was so pissed with the playcalling on the second drive.

First drive, Micah got 4, 4, and 16 on handoffs; plus the first play was the swing pass to Q Gibson that was basically a run for 6 yards.

Second drive, starting at the 48:

Granted, Kaidon should have tucked it and run instead of chucking that one at Sincere on 3rd down; but first or second down needed to be a handoff or read option.

Sometimes I feel like I'm really old school, because I really hate on a visceral level when I see 2nd & 10.

I agree with Schlereth when he talks about establishing the line of scrimmage. Even if you don't gain a lot of yardage you let your linemen beat on the defensive players, you force them to think about the run instead of just pinning their ears back and rushing the QB, you force the second level and third level of the defense to at least look for the run at the snap instead of just going straight to coverage. It also gives your QB a mental and physical break. once he takes the snap he just delivers the ball to the back and maybe runs a little fake but he has time to collect his thoughts and prepare for the next play.

Klatt was talking with Urban Meyer on his podcast this week, highlighting how the young QBs might get coached by Sark and Day ahead of that big game. Urban talked about just getting a couple of first downs being a successful drive a lot of the time to flip the field and give your defense a chance to reset, and that 4 yards a play is winning football.

For my money, if you're able to run effectively, 75%+ of first downs should be runs.

This is me shaking my fist at the clouds like Abraham Simpson muttering, "3 yards and a cloud of dust..."

If those first down plays aren't runs they should be run type passes, screens, RPOs, etc. Statistics show that 2nd and 10 kills a lot more drives than 2nd and even 6 or 7. 2nd and 3 or 4 is a defensive coordinators nightmare, the offense can use the whole playbook.

I’ll say it one last time.

GT put up 42 on UGA last year, and King threw for 300 yards against that defense.

If you think GT isn’t potentially great, playoff caliber team if he stays healthy, you’re wrong.

As was already covered, they lost two of their Gabe’s with him out and lost two tight games to really good teams last year.

Turn 2 of those into wins, and no one is bitching about losing to what would have been a 9 win team returning most of their production.

I’m gonna laugh when GT finishes ahead of Clemson.

Honestly, after reading all the replies here, I don't think people understand how good GT was last year.

They lost to Syracuse, at Syracuse, because McCord had one of the best game of his life.

They lost to Louisville in a very tight game, at Louisville, the score gap looks big because of a fg block TD. Otherwise they would have tied that game late in the fourth quarter.

They lost to Georgia, at Georgia, because of some bad calls from the refs, otherwise they would have won in regular time.

The games they lost to ND and VT, King was hurt so they played backup QB.

And their main productions mostly returned this year.

Listen, they might underperform this year due to injury or whatever bad luck. There is always such possibility in CFB. But based on the available information we have as of now, you are crazy to think GT is not a very good team
No doubt they have a team that knows that offensive scheme and runs it to perfection. I can’t remember more than a few plays where I felt like I could guess the next play they were going to run, even knowing they were going to run.

Our defense had no idea what was coming next. That makes it incredibly hard to stop them, except happening to be lucky to be in a good call, or base D working.

Completely different looking at our O. I think D coordinators simply gear up to stop everything we try to do to the flats and outside running, then just rely on their guys to win inside straight up. There’s nothing confusing going on, at all.

This is exactly what I've been saying. Defense did enough. This loss was primarily about QB play.
Tough for me to argue they did enough when they gave up 320 yards rushing and I think we made them punt, what, twice?? Aside from the early turnovers, I never felt like we did much to stop them. Most runs were going for 6+ yards and even when the entire stadium knew that King was going to keep it, we couldn’t stop it.

QB play was not great and I think the play calling was even worse. I’m hopeful that Salter will do a better job of seeing the field (I thought the OL did a solid job) and using his legs when it can move the chains. And because of the good pass pro, I’m intrigued to see JuJu get some reps this weekend and see what he’s got.

Agreed, they took GA to 8 OTs, beat #4 Miami and lost 2 games b/c King was out. Their offense is a bad match up for CU's D, especially in an opener. There is much left to be desired for the offense and the use of TOs was not good, but at multiple junctures CU put themselves in position to win the game. We seemed to be behind the learning curve (Salter having trouble with the headset), but I think Salter will settle in. I saw some good in him.

our qb was really tentative to start the game, not good reads on rpo. we didn't capitalize on their **** ups and they settled down and worked. I do really like the gt offense. that offense could win bigly right now in the b12.

I am not on the fire Shurmur bandwagon but Jesus he could have done a better job helping the qb out too. the defense got gashed but if we have any offense at all, we win.

I agree with you on this. Felt the same thing about predicting GA Tech's offense. It reminded me of K-State last year in many respects.

Agree with you on O. At present, I think CU lacks a blocking RB for 2nd and/or 3rd and long, which we really need. Atkins was ok, but not a weapon or escape route for QB. He was wide open a few times in middle and did not call for the ball, this can be fixed. Agree with most posters that the Oline looked much improved, but not sure they are good enough yet to pass block consistently on longer downs to either establish a pocket or make for an easy roll out. Still appeared we had some guys beat or missed assignments. Maybe with Hayden back he can be that blocking RB. Salter should settle in over the next 3 games, iron out the helmet audio and just improve. He did have 1st game jitters, but was not Jordan Webb out there.

CU was great in 2001 with Brown and Purify, but Corten Johnson was huge for those longer downs and distances, and that Oline + TE, had three 1st rounders. Johnson won them some games doing the dirty work at RB.
