Official CU vs CSU Game Thread

So - the refs.

There's no two ways about it - that one linesman, the dude who threw all 3 OPI flags - was awful. Maybe the first one was warranted, because there were 2 flags thrown on that play, but the last two, especially Gallup's, were ridiculously bad calls.

Having said that, there weren't any other phantom calls. The hands to the face that called back that TD was a good call. Ticky tack, maybe, but it still happened.
On the replay I couldn't tell who they were talking about because everyone had hands to everyone's face. As for the OPIs, there were quite a few pass breakups by CU's D toward the end that looked more agregious than those. Just sayin'.

I thought the defense was surprisingly good. On offense I noticed 2 things. First, Montez needs to work on the option read. Multiple times there was a lot of room for him to keep the ball but he almost always gave it to Lindsey even though there were 3 guys keying on Lindsey standing right in front of him. The other thing I noticed was that the O just looked flat. They weren't running much tempo and just looked discohesive standing around. I don't expect to see Montez having the same leadership that Sefo had at this point, but he needs to step up and take charge. I also didn't like Bobo's display of anger toward Montez when he threw a quick pass high. Shows a little bit of a lack of cohesion.

So did umu and Irwin get in a huge scuffle at practice where both were suspended?
I was thinking that might be related to Miller's unexpected drop on the depth chart. Maybe Umu took it too far and needed a suspension while it takes two to tango and Miller needed a slight punishment as well. Could be way off base tho.

Found out on MWCBoard that a Nevada fan reminded CSU fans that they benefited from two horrible OPI calls against Nevada (didn't specify game) so I'm like:

Rewatching the game right now as I am only half interested in the Mich-FL game.

+ Montez's TD throw to Fields was about 52 yards in the air. 40 yards down field and 33 yards (give or take) across the field. He wasn't throwing for distance - he was throwing for accuracy. In the second quarter, he missed a receiver with a 63 yard throw. This kid has an arm.
+ Big holes for Lindsey in the first half - the scoring run was drawn up very similarly to OSU's 75 yd TD run against CSU, going 4 wide and pulling the left guard and tackle.
+ We survived a holding call to score on the Montez-Fields TD - that is usually a drive killer.
+ We held CSU to 138 net yards and 3 points in the first half - this is why we shut down the offense in the second half.

I may not watch the second half given because of us shutting down the offense, but enjoyed rewatching the first half.

takeaways:
  • Montez has tremendous talent (that throw down the sideline to J-Mac was on a rope), but needs to step up in the pocket, needs more designed bootlegs ala Jake Plummer, and needs to control the type of emotion he shows (making the money gesture after the TD throw to Shay, clearly dropping multiple f-bombs after the first unlucky INT)
  • I can agree with the "playing it smart" angle, but I was surprised to not see Phil cut-up for a few extra yards on his sweeps...call it game management but I hate how our fb and bb teams can't play with a solid lead without putting it in neutral
  • did any LBs see time other than Gamboa and Lewis? I really like how they compliment each other, but we need a third guy in there for some freshness come Pac play
  • O-line seemed to really struggle in pass protection, lots of factors went into it, but that should be concern numero uno
  • the tailgate scene was embarrassing – are kids getting dumber every year or am I just getting older?

also, is there a number 16 on the DL? I thought it was Mulumba but noticed he's listed as 99 on the roster – my eyes could be deceiving me but I was curious about it during the game

I was sitting on the west side 30 yard line on that throw, threw my hands up like lane kiffen when that Cb bit on the wr comeback. Everyone looked at me like I was retarded lol then all smiles.

It doesn't appear that they have yet allowed Montez to audible out of plays. I saw a number of time where defensive alignment would have called for changing a play and it didn't happen. Either that, or Montez is allowed and simply isn't at the point to actually call it.

Did anyone get a good angle on the first personal foul penalty on the hit to Montez? I don't recall when it happened but it was pretty early in the game and I remember thinking, "wow that had to be a cheap shot," because it didn't look possible for him to get hit when he released the ball. I rewatched the game when I got home but they never showed the replay of it.

Yup, if you are talking about the first one when he was standing, the guy was very late and dropped his helmet but held up at the last second so he didn't take him down. Still, he was very very late, probably 3 steps.

16 is Mulumba

Probably a lot of students voting.....They want this game. The season ticket holders don't.

Hangover from us sucking so long that our students actually think this game is worthy of us.

Taking a campus tour this summer, the tour guide called CSU "our biggest rival". Grrrrr.

Going from memory but I think a part of the first PF on Montez was that the defender while hitting him had a hand or arm up at the head. Becoming pretty standard in college football that if you get close to a QBs head on a pass rush the flag is coming out.
