Official CU vs Delaware Game Thread

No, Salter looked overmatched. I liked what I saw at Liberty but he had a team around him that was one of the most talented in that conference. He hasn't adjusted his game to the step up in competition with GT and now he doesn't have confidence. Throws when he should run, scrambles when he should throw it away. doesn't have control of his own game and the team isn't confident in him.

Juju looks like a 17 year old freshman getting his first live action in college football. He knows that he didn't play how he is capable of playing. He's going to be fine but it will take some time and there will be some rough spots. He's not getting two years on the bench hoping to get some garbage time. He knows that as the season goes on he will continue to get more chances.
Problem is that multiple true freshman QB's are killing it, especially Underwood and that kid at Cal, so Juju may be 17 years old blah blah blah, but with a competent playbook, he could have started the season

Coach Prime not being in the building all summer (for obvious and serious reasons) had a lot to do with how close this team was or how prepared they were. Shurmur did not do his job every moment

Idk if it’s Salter himself, or if the offensive design doesn’t work for Salter, but clearly our best chance to win going forward does not include a heavy dose of Kaidon Salter.
It’s Salter. He wasn’t good at processing at Liberty. He was just good enough at that level to improvise and succeed. Schemes and talent at this level are too much.

Ya it's genuinely hard to tell if Salter is terrible or if Shurmur is just a terrible OC who isn't capable of calling plays for a run first QB. Salter was actually good at Liberty so I'm leaning towards the latter. But it doesn't really matter which one it is when the end result is bad.

Honestly Shurmur should've been fired after last season, the offense was fine but I'd argue it WAY underperformed relative to the talent level. Shedeur+Hunter+multiple WRs drafted/signed by NFL teams should've resulted in a much better offense.

Salter made his money in 2023 - 61% completions, 2,800 yards passing, 40 TDs, 1000 yards rushing, 12 TDs. But in 2024 - he was pretty average. 56% passing, 1,800 yards, only 15 TDs. 600 rushing yards, 7 TDs.
As I posted when he signed, the coaches at Liberty weren’t exactly broken up that he was leaving. Direct from 2 Liberty coaches.

Getting rid of Shurmur this season was not possible. After Sean Lewis, Deion needed to show to the coaching ranks he is not a problem.

What happens if he goes 18/31 for 195 yards with 1 TD and 2 INT in a 31-13 loss to Houston?
I'd be more scared of Salter doing that honestly. He is not very accurate, worse when he is scrambling, he misses reads and open players, he lacks pocket presence and he still seems hesitant to run.

He does have a strong arm, and on designed runs and the triple option he is serviceable.

He ain't QB1 for this team.

And JUJU ain't ready. He may get there this season, but not yet and he could also do the above as well at this point.

You gotta worry about Seaton, Juju, and the Receivers all leaving now if Prime cannot work his family magic and bring it all back together

I would not have handled it this way, and Shurmur has put the program in a tough spot and Prime is making things up on the fly without his Sheduer blanky

Da Lama, honestly, what is Juju thinking right now?
I don’t think JuJu was told he was going to be the man this year so for him nothing has changed. Salter looks to be the odd man out, his body language his horrible, he can’t thrown on the run and if Lama says he can’t process, the body of work bears that out. Staub has been the one consistent since Prime got here. He looks the part and right now that’s half the battle. Pretty sure he’s going to run with the ones this week. I’m kinda juiced to be honest.

If that was coupled with a very effective option run game and something like 8 carries for 40 yards for him it would be exactly what is needed from him.

Unfortunately, either he or Shurmur don't seem interested in him being a regular runner.

He actually had 9 rushes for 25 yards - which seems incredible - it felt like he got sacked 5 times.

1st series - Salter. 87 yards and TD
2nd series - Salter. CU gets ball at CU 47 yard line after Delaware turnover on downs - 43 yards, field goal.
3rd series - JuJu. Punt. Prime said JuJu would play 3rd series.
4th series - JuJu. Punt.
5th series - Staub. 75 yards and TD
6th series - Staub. 75 yards and TD
7th series - Staub. 49 yards and punt.
8th series - Staub. CU gets ball at Delaware 24 yard line after blocked punt. TD.
9th series - Salter. 12 yards and punt.
10th series - Salter. 2 yards and punt.

CP's decision to play JuJu on the 3rd series may have sunk Salter. Again - I don't think he has a clue what he's doing.

A few freshmen do well many more take some time. The playcalling could have and should have been better to help Juju but these statements of what he could have done right out of the box are crazy. Watching right now a Freshman for Kentucky, talented, but missing an open read at a critical time. It's a different game than high school. Let's just let Juju be Juju and let him become the guy we believe he can be.

Shurmur is a problem and Prime is going to have to get past his loyalty and move on from him.

We can't run the Shedeur offense without Shedeur and frankly it wasn't as effective as it should have been with him. Shurmur may have forgotten more about offensive football than most coaches know but he also has a long history or boring, uninspired offenses that didn't do enough to carry their teams.

I think JuJu’s game aligns more with Staub than Salter. Having 2 different offenses because your QB’s have very different games is hard. It’s obvious that Shurmur didn’t trust Salter downfield so quick bubble screens were called. Everyone needs to take a deep breath, life is all about Plan B. The post game pressor should be fun.

I’ve told you all that repeatedly. He had no expectations that he was going to get anything but occasional situational snaps. He was guaranteed to be the “future.” That hasn’t changed.

Prime admitted that they coddled Juju so he would not fail?

What? That does not process for me

You did not let him do what he wanted to do and that hurt him, but you then call him young.

If its Staub, so be it, go and win games, but cannot wait to see how you keep this locker room together

I, for one, welcome our new Staub overlord.

The D looked like crap. Soft. Missed tackles, failed to shed blocks from the Delaware Fighting Bidens.

Salter is mid G5 caliber and cannot read the game. Bring the house at him to rush him and contain him on the run, he will never throw over the top and beat you.

Juju never got any plays called to see what he can do, it was almost like they were scared to do that.

Shurmur is single handedly killing this team.

CP coaching chops are seriously in question.

Willy Fritz' sides are probably hurting right now.

The locker room likes Staub a lot. Just FYI.
Staub knows what his job is here.

He would have no issue, and create no issue, if he was the starter from here out but with Juju getting multiple opportunities to develop and even taking over as his play indicates, relegating Staub back to being the backup.

And no we aren't going to see an exodus to the portal if Staub is the starter. The portal risk may come if Shurmur is kept for next season. We have multiple guys who are here because they want to showcase for the NFL, Shurmur's offense isn't doing a good job of that.
