When things work exactly like they are supposed to he is okay. As soon as something breaks down then he is in trouble.
As I've said before the key to playing QB is what happens between the ears. It requires the right decisions but those decisions have to be automatic, they have to be at the moment because any delay and the opportunity is gone.
Salter looks like a guy who isn't confident in making the right decision. He is thinking do I run or throw? Go to the primary or the outlet? Is the safety in position or do I have a seam? You can't think about this stuff, it just has to happen.
Again Staub may not have the physical gifts but he is comfortable doing what he can do. Juju will get there. When the game gets into a guys head like it seems to with Salter I don't know what can be done. There are certain play calls that can be used that take the thinking away. The bubble screens fit this but then when the defense figures out they are coming then they don't work and the confidence goes further down.
8:15pm on Family Weekend in front of a sold-out crowd, optimistic and hopeful for an easy win sounds like exactly the perfect environment for WYO’s backup QB to rush for 350yds and prove they are, in fact, good enough

That’s not college football. Winning teams with strong defenses have bad offensive personnel, not vanilla play calling. College football should be about dominating and imposing strength against weaker opponents. If our offense’s talent can’t do that against Delaware then it’s a much bigger problem. I’d venture most of us think we do have that explosive talent on offense, it’s just bland play calling holding the squad back.
Shurmer fails as at college because his NFL instincts are uniquely different from college: First fewer games, there is no time build consistency through strategy. Second college has a more significant talent gap across all positions. It’s not the NFL where everyone is top class on the field. Teams have to take exploit the advantages not try to fool the opponent through a bunch of setup plays.
Shurmer needs to call plays with urgency, colleges isn’t a feel it out football game.

It was Saturday against Delaware on the FG drive. I'll try to find the screen shot.
We were a 3rd and 10 handoff from being stopped on Staub's first series, going 3 and out immediately after Delaware scored a TD and only having a 10-7 half time lead. I don't think Staub has solidified anything but he has earned the opportunity to get reps with the 1s in practice and start the game. I still think they are going to continue being patient with Salter and I'm guessing they would love for Juju to make some throws like Staub and assert himself.
Even though Houston is the first game of Big 12 play, I think they are going to treat it and Wyoming in a similar fashion to Delaware in that they are going to give all three a chance to prove they are QB1 for when Big 12 play gets tough the following week against BYU.
Hodge looked unplayable. Came out of left field for me, and that is not a good sign for this year

This is exactly the play I was referring to, and the fundamentals are even worse than I recalled. Imagine if he was stepping up into the pocket as he should. Hard to think he wouldn’t have seen DM right there—what?—12 yards away for an easy TD.

Exactly where he was looking. He missed an easy TD doing so, assuming the dude catches it.
Something to note about Staubs only start in 2023 as a true frosh, yes we lost the game and it was close, but it was against a very strong utah defensive unit that year. They were easily a top 20, probably higher. Houstons defense is no where near what he played against in that game. And we had one of the worst offensive lines that year.

To add to the levity of player comps, Staub reminds me of Chase Daniel (I hated that dude at Mizzou) but he could fit it in there and seemed to play smart effecient ball. Plus he was built like the rest of us lesbians, could fill out the corduroy if you know what I mean; similar to Staub.

And,
1) game was on the road. Always loud in that stadium
2) one CU drive had 2 plays that were TDs blown by the refs
To me, Staub has lower ceiling but higher floor. I think we beat GTech if he was starter. That’s not so much praise for him but the reality of poor play by Salter. Team was noticeable more pumped/energetic when he came in. Again, he’s not a superstar but maybe the team sees that he makes better reads and calls. Juju still shows lots of potential but is very young and it shows

Chase was a beast in college. Even better than Noah. While I've seen more impressive play in one game than I've seen in Chase college and pro career from Staub, if we can get anywhere close to Daniels level consistency, that would be insane. Not expecting it, especially in this scheme. I'll settle for Noah.
That game score will look identical to the Delaware score. Trust me.
If that’s the case, then it’ll be a Kansas State/Will Howard situation where a bigger school will grab him in January while we are committed to Juju

It could happen but would Staub leave. He could have left previously. If he's productive, why would he not fight? Doesn't seem Staub like
He wasn’t going to get a bag somewhere else if he left after last season. If he has a few more good games, he will get offers he can’t turn down.
I don't need a ceiling that is sky high, don't need a star. Need a QB who will facilitate so the guys we have who do have the high ceilings can do their thing.
Our WR room is one of the most explosive in the country but with Salter then might as well be a bunch of walk-ons. Our RBs are better than they have been including an ability to do some things in the passing game.
Just need somebody to make the right decisions and get the ball to the guys who can do something with it.
