Official CU vs Houston game thread - 9/12/25

It’s one thing to bring his sons and Trav, along with a handful of P4 caliber guys to HBCU and dominate. That’s him simply having more talent than his opponents.

He has a similar opportunity to do that relative to the Big 12 opponents by bringing in SEC/B1G caliber recruits. So far, he has been so-so in doing that but it becomes a wash when the staff he has can’t coach to their abilities.
He was second to Texas tech in the overall Big12 recruiting rankings in 2025 and first in 2024. This isn’t a recruiting problem. Georgia tech didn’t have more talented roster than us. Houston certainly didn’t have a more talented roster than us. It’s entirely a coaching problem and one of Prime’s biggest downfalls to this point is who he surrounds himself with. Pat being number 1 on that list.

After watching other games today, Shurmur needs to go tonight!!!

Get Bartolone and Salter in a room and knock out a 15 play playbook for Wyoming
Let Salter play the entire game unless we are up by more than 28 points and then let Juju play, and be sure to let him throw the ball, not run out the clock

Even Georgia Tech has creativity besides a power game

The Georgia Tech coach is a bit of an asshole to reporters

Kind of my point. He had great success at JSU because he out talented everyone. He hasn’t been able to do that at CU to this point and his coaching hires have left a lot to be desired.

I believe that Staub earned that start and for it to be his game (not going in knowing he's on a leash).

I also believe that Staub did not earn keeping that job.
He earned it through two drives against Delaware? Did Salter earn getting benched after leading two scoring drives to start the game? It was an absolute 🤡 show and is indefensible in hindsight.

It's absolutely a recruiting problem - he relies on outcasts from P4 schools who largely didn't do anything at their previous school and transfer grades a extremely inflated.

This team isn't talented and it has poor coaching to boot.

Just rewatched the game while choking down pumpkin spice pancakes. Not sure which made me gag more. Quick initial observation: This offensive scheme is about as basic as you'll find in college football. That said, there are receivers getting open, but the QBs are flat out not seeing them. Staub's post snap reads look very similar to Salter's. That's an issue the QB coach needs to focus on. Then I re-realize Shurmur is also the QB coach, and it all makes sense.
Next observation: Do any of our defensive players/staff know what the fvkk gap control is? How is our DL so inept at getting into gaps and maintaining? And how are our LBs so bad at getting to the correct gaps? Every damn one of them is guessing and getting washed.

I'm at a loss.

Well, turns out a couple of members here are correct. GT is a team in acc to compete for CFB playoff spots.
And one of the top heisman candidates, Klubnik, just went 15-26 for 207. 1 td and 1 int. Maybe we shouldn’t have passed such a hard judgment on Salter to start….

We did recruit well out of HS but our portal recruiting wasn't good especially considering how many seniors we had on the team last year and those that played significant snaps. To say we didn't recruit well out of HS this year is a lie. McPherson looks like a stud as does Merritt. Juju talent looks the part. Gibson and Farrakhan Jr. Looks intriguing. We added a lot of talented kids. Our issue is Portal recruiting is a failure in 2024 and outside of Seaton. We have no dudes. Our best work in the portal was on Special Teams. Buck and New Mate look tremendous.

We paid handsomely for Oatis and he hasn't lived up to it. No one has replaced Chidozie who was massive for us in 2024. No one replaced BJ yet that's a vet. No one has replaced Bentley or NHG. No one has replaced Hood and obviously no one is replacing Hunter. Byard might be able to replace Cam but let's wait and see, consistency is KEY. No one has replaced Shilo who many on this board said we can easily replace. We didn't just replace depth, we massively improved it but we didn't replace starters and definitely didn't replace the studs. The studs are critical. They can do the work of two players. Prime loves talking about hiding players but that's only possible if you have studs

Coach Phillips says we must match replacing production but the only way you can do that is by being consistent. Not just talented. Cam WR was undrafted but he was extremely consistent and productive. All 4 of our top WRs are more talented than Wester, Horn, and Sheppard those three are way more productive because they are way more consistent

You spark another concern I have: Prime & Co.'s ability to evaluate who should be on the field. Finnseth was bad last night. He was decent against Delaware, and he was mediocre against GT. Every time Byard has stepped on the field this year, he has made plays and given us a fierce attitude. I better not see Finnseth on D again...

My guess is Byard will be in there going forward but prob over Stoutmire

I have plenty of Prime issues but the biggest wasnt there in 2023. His stubborn this year. In 2023, his OC and DC would always try to attack the weaknesses of the opponent and that was their gameplan. Last year, he started this stubbornness of, this is our identity, this is what we do. It worked because well. We had major holes and we had major strengths. So we really didn't have another option even if we wanted to.

In 2025, he's just as stubborn but there is no identity. If they went back to doing what they did in 2023, they would be part more successful even if it didn't fix their issues. It would at least get us closer to understanding our identity. Prime and Pat are trying to run a Shedeur offense with elements of NFL Pat which we don't have the QB for as well as another offense we don't personnel for. We are nowhere close to having a competent college offense.

As for Rob, I really don't know know what he can do. He has a lot of backups starting and what's behind them is also backups. Rob issue might be harder to fix than Pat's

I think that Rob's issues improve a ton with guys getting reps. Recognition leading to assignment correctness and then getting faster at it or even being able to disguise it.

We need a GM now….long overdue. Nobody on the staff is effectively managing roster acquisition, NIL budgets, etc

And they are in a hurry to get caught and washed, just run like hell into the wrong gap, no patience or analysis done, that cannot actually be coached can it?

It's film study that leads to opponent tendency/read recognition, that leads to trusting your reads in play, that leads to attacking, not hesitating.

It 100% can be addressed with proper coaching.

I had no idea (obviously). Is he any good?
From the agents I've spoke with. He's a good guy. He's not someone I've heard talk like he's Bama's GM. Courtney Morgan is special. I think people underestimate the lost of Coach Rizz. That's the lost i hear the most about. Rizz had connections and he was a nice clean upper. Some of Prime’s issue had nothing to do with Prime. The cost of a starter significantly went up in 2025 and Prime had the budget for a starter in 2023 and 2024. Basically meant instead of NHG, we bargin starter shop and get French and Hughes. A lot of middle tier guys boosted their NIL and it put CU in a terrible position. This is why we are seeing, we didnt replace starters on defense.
