Official CU vs. Kansas Game Thread 11/23/24

We really struggled to deal with Jalon Daniels. A lot! I think he was the difference maker in how we defended KU. We gotta figure out how to deal with these twitchy QBs.
That’s a million $ question, especially as it relates to a twitchy QB that plays on a fairly complete team

And tonight. If we get an a big tiebreaker it is going to be common opponents and then record against the next best team, so we want the teams we beat up top.
CU already got their breaks. Controlled their destiny. Had the ball on their racquet. Bungled it. Would be a karma miracle if they got another chance.

I know there wasn't really any success tonight, but there also needs to be a willingness to keep trying if the first couple of runs don't hit, and it'd be nice to have more than like 2 runs in the first 15 plays.

I think 3 of the 8 handoffs were on the final drive.

I think Augustave getting hurt changed that. There's a big drop off to Hayden. And either Welch wasn't healthy enough or he didn't have the reps.

I know we don't have the best run blocking, but all year long, there has been nothing with Hayden running the ball inside. Different results with the other backs.

Have to put him in position where he has to throw the ball and get it downfield. Do that and he will throw it to you.

Let him control the game with the running game and play from favorable down and distance he can (and did) take advantage of forcing defenders to make a choice.

Yep

It’ll be even worse!

Better talent. As awesome as our LB played this season, it's not hard to upgrade there.
NHG is going to be hard to upgrade from next year unless they are able to pull a proven stud in the portal. If they can close on NOB, I expect him to have that potential, but probably not in year one. Definitely shouldn’t be hard to find an upgrade over Bentley. He’s an average player.

Bentley can be easily replaced by a talented freshman LB. He's basically the Hank Z. Of the defense.

The OL letting SS get harassed a bunch was much more concerning to me. Kinda feels like we still need some help.

I missed a lot of the first half.

As Bill McCartney said "possess the football". We have to be able to run the ball and the clock. The TOP disparity tonight was a killer.

We also ran a small number of plays because Kansas couldn't be stopped, so the 8 carries probably isn't as horrific as it sounds. Still, I'd be happier than a pig in **** if there are 5 called runs in the first 15 plays next week.

I think we played to contain Daniels, and that allowed Neal to gash us. But Neal is a legit back. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see him be a very good pro back.

We did and when we sold out to stop Neal, Daniels got us. We couldn't deal with Daniels. Neal killed us clearly but it wasn't like Giddens. This was really Daniels

I think we'll get better and deeper now that it's clear we are a serious program and that Prime surrounds himself with serious football people. But SS and Trav are probably good for 2-3 wins. So we may drop back in win total even though we are improving as a program. 2026 will be the bellwether.

The QB matters the most against us. If you got a QB who can really do damage, we can't defend that with the current personnel. That's our weakness. NDSU was in it against us because of the QB. Also, our pass rushers don't have great speed. We saw it earlier in the season because of the QBs we played but since, we played against slower QBs and our EDGEs were cooking but now we are against these twitchy QBs again and we are struggling.

We really lack speed up the middle. Our safeties aren't fast just instinctive. Our LBs aren't fast, just instinctive. Same for our DTs which is expected. We need to recruit more speed. Wester at LB is our only LB with speed and he's small. He gets hands on him too easy. We need speed plus size on D.

Offensively, we need a legit #1 RB. Isiah makes due but no one else is a #1. Micah could be but he really should be redshirted on most teams.

Giddens/Johnson and Daniels/Neal exposed some problems with tackling. A bit of thunder and lighting combo of problems.
