That's awesome! Phil is way smarter and more humble than I would be in his situation. Very happy for him.
On the smart guy thing: My post was along the lines of
1) UBL
2) Helicopters fly themselves
3) Tini's mom
4) 130 degrees in the shade
If you recognize any of those, hopefully that helps you understand the nature of my post.
Crap, I'm clearly still a newb.
Good move for him. Solid financially but even better he has a quality family.
Should make it a lot easier for him to deal with the ups and downs of an NFL season. Get him a stable diet, not have to worry about taking care of bills and an apartment.
Be a big help to him being around his dad as well. His parents did a great job raising the family.
I'm really proud that helicopters flying themselves has stuck around so long. I have no idea why, but at least I can smile knowing that somewhere, the walrus winces every time he reads it.
I don't see the downside at all to him living at home. From all accounts there.i are a very close family and his mom hasn't been in the best of health from some of his public comments. I see this being more of an opportunity to help out at home rather than a situation of not wanting to take responsibility for living on his own. He is humble and driven.

He is on a non guaranteed league minimum deal. Should he under perform, or get injured, or whatever that money stops. The smart move is for him to bank as much of that pay as possible. You are right, he isn't a moron.
Phil living at home is great. It gives him a chance to get some large checks, and still have a structured environment around him so that he can try and use/save that money wisely as he spends that first year learning the ropes. Even at the minimum, he is still getting more money every week then he has ever received before.
The NHL has a great tradition like this, where a young rookie often spends his first year or even two living in a spare room of a veteran player. The veteran player usually is in his mid-30's and has a family. The rookie gets a structured environment to learn what it means to have that money shoved into your lap without the sudden freedom and bad social influences that lots of NFL rookies face. Meanwhile, the rookie also gets to maintain some semblance of responsibility, watching kids from time to time or helping with chores.... getting to practice and events early, etc. It helps to ground this young guys at a critical time in their careers and provides them a mentor to hopefully teach them about money and a professional league.
It might sound a little childish, but I think it really helps smooth the transition for the young NHL players into professionals.

Even though I bet he gives his parents a huge chunk of that to pay off their house or to help siblings college bills. You just know he will.

Awesome journey for the undersized kid from Denver
When he was picked up I thought the running back room was full and had no idea if he’d make it at his size. This story is incredible to me.
Appears to be Phil's dad's birthday today too. Not a bad present.
