Official RPI Watch 2014-15

Scary thing is, at least IMO, USC is clearly better than OSU & WSU and should be better than ASU as well.

Could be an ugly year at the bottom.

Where would you put auburn in our conference.

Where would you put auburn in our conference.

I'd put them right with ASU. In fact, with all the new pieces trying to fit together those teams are similar. Auburn probably has more guys who have proven it in D1, to their advantage. ASU has had a program and system in place under Sendek for a number of years, to their advantage.

I think about 8th. Harrell, Mason, Bowers and Ross-Miller would out-gun the Wazzu's of the Pac and Pearl would find a way to pull a couple home upsets.

Thursday:

USC (1-1) vs Akron (1-0) (Charleston, SC): USC has looked awful and now faces an Akron squad that may be best in the MAC. It would be a nice win for USC if they could pull it off. Don't count on it.

Drexel (0-2) vs Miami (2-0) (Charleston, SC): Can Drexel catch Miami with a hangover after their big win in Gainesville?

Cal (2-0) vs #23 Syracuse (2-0) (New York, NY): Huge opportunity for Cal here against a Cuse squad that may take a few weeks to find its footing.

Arizona St (2-0) vs Loyola Marymount (1-1): ASU looked like absolute **** last time out, only managing 49 points (16 in the second half) against lowly Bethune Cookman. Loyola Marymount is one of the weaker WCC sides right now, but can you take anything for granted with ASU and their woeful offense?

Lipscomb (1-1) @ Vanderbilt (1-0): Lipscomb is actually one of the better Atlantic Sun teams but just got their doors blown off by a decent Belmont squad. Vanderbilt is a bottom level SEC team and hasn't faced a D1 opponent yet.

UCLA (2-0) vs Nicholls St (0-1): UCLA's early season cupcake feast continues.

Just sayin'.

Cal is playing well. Cuonzo is a good coach and has them playing a very well-honed game for this early in the season. They just responded to a Syracuse run and pushed the lead back to 18, so they're looking very good to close this out against 'Cuse in the Garden. Not an easy task, even against what looks to be a bad Orange team that looks to have little firepower and is playing about the worst matchup zone I've ever seen from a Boeheim team.

Cuse will improve as always, but they will not crack the top 4 of the ACC.

Top 4 is lightyears ahead of them. Once we get past Duke, UNC, UVA and Louisville... I'd still say that they're in a pack with NCSU, FSU, NDU, Pitt and Miami. They could fall hard this year, just like Notre Dame did last year.

They're in that mid-tier, although I still think Pitt, Cuse and ND are probably a step ahead of NCSU and FSU within that group by conference play. I expected Cuse to struggle early, we'll see if/when they figure it out. That was ugly tonight.

Friday:

USC (1-2) vs Drexel (0-3) (Charleston, SC): Both are opponents. We want USC since we play them twice.

George Washington (2-0) @ #9 Virginia (3-0): Colonials have looked good early, dismantling a weak Rutgers side on the road. They're even getting a few top 25 votes. This is a solid NCAA Tournament level team if last year is any indicator. If they keep it close or win in Charlottesville it would be further proof that we'll have a huge battle on our hands at the Diamondhead.

Cal (3-0) vs #10 Texas (3-0) (New York, NY): Cal is fresh off exposing a #23 Syracuse side (btw, is it just me, or is this is very "Cal" thing to do in hoops: pick up an quality early win). Solid early season win for the Pac, but it's pretty clear Cuse has no business being ranked. Texas handled a decent Iowa squad by 14 and is far better than 'Cuse. If Cal keeps this close or wins, it will be official proof that Cuonzo has worked some early magic and Cal is way ahead of where we thought they were. I hesitate to get too carried away with Cal based solely on Syracuse (I think we'll look back in March and see a mid-tier Pac squad beat a mid-tier ACC squad), but if they impress against Texas, I will be won over.

Oregon (2-0) vs Toledo (1-1): Danger alert for Oregon. This Toledo squad is solid. Preseason favorite to win the MAC. We've already seen the MAC embarrass the Pac, with Akron's 20 point win over USC. Toledo played #15 VCU very close on the road before foul shots made it a misleading 9 point loss. Major thing working in Oregon's favor is Toledo was just out in Richmond on the 18th so they may be jet-lagged and worn down after a hard fought loss.

Stanford (2-0) vs UNLV (2-0) (Brooklyn, NY): Johnny Dawkins vs Dave Rice. Coaching comedy could be on tap. Stanford has taken care of business, albeit somewhat unimpressively against Wofford and South Dakota. UNLV, meanwhile, has looked like complete **** in a 60-59 win over Morehead State and a 59-57 win over Sam Houston St. Stanford should handle these guys. UNLV has some talent (picked 4th in MWC), but they're declining under Dave Rice and a far cry from the side we met in the Dance a few years back. Loss here would be a blow for Stanford and the Pac.

Georgia (1-1) vs Troy (1-1): Troy is a lower level Sun-Belt team. Georgia should coast, but this is non-Kentucky SEC hoops we're talking about so you never know.

#25 Utah (1-1) vs UC-Riverside (1-1): Utes' first game after losing @ SDSU in a downright ugly game. Riverside is probably the worst Big West team. Utes should roll.

Washington State (0-2) vs Idaho State (0-2): Wazzu has been nothing short of a disaster thus far, coming off a 27 point throttling by a **** TCU side. Idaho State is abysmal themselves. Surely Wazzu can't lose this one...

Oregon State (2-0) vs Oral Roberts (1-1): Beavs are only favored by 1 at home against a mid-level Summit League side. That about sums it up. Sure, OSU is 2-0, but who wouldn't be when you've played something called "Corban".

Colorado State (1-0) vs Georgia State (1-1): Sneaky tough test for CSU. Georgia State is the best team in the Sun Belt and won't be put away easily.

Auburn (1-1) vs Louisiana-Lafayette (1-1): ULL is the second best Sun Belt squad. Auburn should win, but if they're caught sleeping and demoralized after CU, we may beat them twice.

Washington (1-0) @ Seattle (1-1): Cute of Washington to get a "road" game for the RPI. Huskies should win comfortably, but it's a cross-town "rivalry" so you never know.

Watching Drexel vs USC on ESPN3. Drexel ran out to an early lead, but USC has been chipping away.

29-20 Drexel with about 5 minutes left in the half.

Lots going on right now:

GW vs UVA... down 9 in the 2nd half

Oregon vs Toledo... up 11 in the 2nd

Stanford vs UNLV... up 25 in the 2nd

Georgia vs Troy... up 19 in the 2nd

Cal vs Texas... down 10 at half

Utah hosts UC Riverside at 7 MT (PACN)

CSU hosts Georgia State at 7

Auburn hosts LA-Lafayette at 7 (FSN)

Washington at Seattle at 8

UVA beats GW 59-52. For GW, If their big man Larsen can be shutdown like he was tonight, we'll beat them. They aren't good from outside.

From Rugby Road to Vinegar Hill, We're gonna get drunk tonight.
The faculty's afraid of us, They know we're in the right,
So fill your cups, your loving cups, As full as full can be,
And as long as love and liquor last, We'll drink to the U. of V.

Pretty good day for our eventual SOS so far.

Utah, WSU, OSU and Auburn all just closed out wins.

CSU struggling with Georgia State, though. Down 5 at half.

Washington with a dud of a 1st at Seattle. Were down 20-21. They've started the 2nd on an 8-0 run to get it going.

Washington took care of business, 63-48. Romar is gonna be pissed about giving up 21 offensive rebounds to Seattle, though.

who cares about romars attitude, they won.

Remember when we first joined the p12, the ONLY "good" non-con win was CAL over CSU?! They called the RAMS a "GOOD" non-con win.

We (as a conf) have already notched more (and better) wins.

Rams had some good basketball teams. They did finish top 30 in rpi the year we joined the Pac.
