Olympic Sports- Transfers (incoming and outgoing) and other roster news

If Gabby is gone my initial reaction is that it's a huge loss for the volleyball program as it makes getting back to the NCAA tourney (I assume that is the goal for this season) much more difficult.

I'll be looking forward to Bebe's analysis of the team minus Gabby.

Sure Mark, since I'm such an expert.!!????
What I can say right now is that Gabby was out of the spring practices and scrimmages with an injury. The transfer outside hitter from Penn State was filling in at setter and the team didn't look too bad. She has prior experience as a setter when she was in high school / club. They have a highly thought of setter coming in as a freshman. She will need to adjust pretty quick to play at the high major college level. Wouldn't surprise me if the coaches are looking for another setter unless they have been working with Taylor Joachim who has setting in her background in club / high school.. It would be a bad idea to only have one capable setter on the roster. IMO you should have 2 plus someone who can serve as an emergency backup.

BeBe, you are an expert on volleyball and the Buffs in particular.

With Gabby, IIRC, she played outside hitter as well where she was effective. So that will be another area the Buffs will have to address.

She did play as both setter and right side hitter but they are in decent shape, IMO, at the RS hitter spot with senior Joslyn Hayes probably backed up by Soph Taylor Joachim. They also have a good crew of left side hitters. My main concern there is that they don't have as much height at the left side as I would like. But that isn't affected one way or another by Gabby's situation.

I'm guessing that Gabby wasn't a surprise to the coaching staff. It had looked like setter was a bit over-recruited this year, which now makes sense.

Gabby has announce on Instagram. She is not active on Twitter but has changed her intro to KU Volleyball #5

More details later (AztecBuff?), but we have 2 yet to be formally announced new transfers to the Buff Soccer team who are both excellent players...1) Courtney Kaplan, who was highly recruited and played as a Freshman in 2015 at South Carolina...she's from the St. Louis area; and 2) Tatum Barton, who was also highly recruited and played as a Freshman in 2016 at Texas Tech...she was Colorado Player of the Year in 2014, and 1st Team All-State in both 2014 and 2015. Ms. Kaplan seems not to have been on the roster for the 2016 season at South Carolina, but I don't know the reason...injury? She is 5'10" which is always a great asset. Ms. Barton played a lot of minutes for a Freshman and is known to be very aggressive on the ball and in the box. Both of these young ladies should have three years of eligibility remaining. They both played Forward their Freshman years in college. Two terrific additions to an already very strong team. Go Buffs!

Just a comment re transfers in NCAA Women's Soccer. It is common even among the top programs to lose and gain players by transfer each year. Three of the top four scorers for the 2016 NCAA Champion USC Trojans were transfers. About the only school I can think of off the top of my gourd that rarely has a player transfer out is Stanford (why would anyone leave and give-up that diploma?), but even they occasionally take a transfer in. Probably Duke and Harvard are in the same category, but Harvard and the other Ivies are usually not highly ranked teams...Duke usually is. Transfers in soccer do not have to sit-out a year like in some sports.

Wanted to mention a defender on the Buff soccer team, Brooklyn Varnadore, is no longer showing on this season's roster. Believe she would have been a redshirt sophomore this season after suffering a serious injury (ACL?) during the spring 2016 training season which kept her out all of last season. Did see her name get mentioned as almost scoring a goal in one of the spring 2017 training matches, so hopefully she is, at minimum, recovered physically.

Best wishes to her.

Picnic at Prentup
Which turned out to be dinner at Dal Ward due to the possibility of rain.

It was my first time at this event and I thoroughly enjoyed it as there was a rare opportunity to get to know some of the players beyond what I see on the pitch.
There wasn’t much info coming from the coaches, but talking to a few players I was able to obtain some info about injuries.

Stephanie Zuniga is out this fall due an ACL tear and it seems Jorian Baucom maybe as well. She injured her knee before transferring to CU.
JJ Tompkins told me she is 100%. Listening to her and Scout talk to the guests it’s easy to see why they are co-captains this season.

Both Sarah Kinzner and Marty Puketapu told me that they had to leave their respective home countries to find better competition. Kinzner said her coaches were encouraging players to get to the US. Puketapu sold herself to colleges in the US as she wasn’t recruited – she visited Portland, Oregon State and of course CU.
Puketapu hopes to be called up to the NZ national team when they are in Colorado this fall to face the US. She said she most likely wouldn’t get much playing time should she make the team.

Joss Orejel would like to play with the Mexican national team when she is done with college. She has played on their youth teams, but told me that the training camps are in Mexico City so she has turned down call-ups that interfere with classes but this apparently has cost her as there isn’t and understanding by the national team coaches about getting an education.

Sarah Kinzner turned down a call-up to the Canadian national team for the U-20 World Cup in December ’16 as it would have messed up her education. She too wants to continue to play for Canada.

Brooklyn Varnadore has been medically retired.

Courtney Kaplan was at the event, but isn’t on the online roster.

Season tickets are only $25 this year and a Prentup Pass (tickets, scarf and a reserved seating section at mid-field) is $50.

The Cross Country roster was updated last week, and in addition to the freshmen, there was also a transfer added to the men's team- Mark Tedder, who will be a senior after transferring from Cornell. (Nothing much in his CU bio right now, but assume it will be filled in soon - http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11484).

Welcome to him!

Looking at his Cornell bio (http://www.cornellbigred.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=43542&path=mtrack), he's used all his track (at minimum main outdoor season) eligibility, in which case he'll probably only be a Buff athlete for this XC season. With 4 years at Cornell, and his showing as a Teaching Asst. in the Colorado.edu directory (Applied Math dept.), assume he's a Grad transfer. With last season's Cornell roster listing Physics and Mathematics as his majors, assume academics were a/the major reason he's now a Buff.

Looks like he had a nice highlight his senior track season, winning the Ivy League 10K championship per https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/4542478/Cornell/Mark_Tedder.html).

Finally, these rankings usually don't necessarily mean much, but Flotrack ranked their top "Impact" transfers of the year, and Mr. Tedder ranks #12 in their list (http://www.flotrack.org/article/60447-18-impact-ncaa-distance-transfers#.WZ3XCSh97IU).

I was just in the Cross Country team roster looking something up, and noted there's been a previously un-reported (at least in Allbuffs) transfer into the women's cross country and (I assume) track teams. Welcome and congrats to sophomore Sophie Baird, who is joining the Buffs after spending her freshman year at UCLA!

Her CU bio page - http://www.cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11537 (Not much info in there right now, other than that she is from neighboring Utah, having been part of what I believe is a traditionally strong high school cross country team at American Fork HS, American Fork UT.)

Her Bruin's bio page from last season - http://www.uclabruins.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=5039

Her times last season - https://www.tfrrs.org/athletes/5982274.html?popup=1&printable=1

I dug in to this a bit. Her 2016 Pac 12 CC Championship 44th place run would have out her 45 seconds behind CU's last finisher. That being said, she was just a freshman at a marginal CC program with UCLA. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see her take some nice jumps YoY and be a very solid part of the program as she develops.

CU has such a great tradition with Cross Country. Any kid who comes to this program is going to improve if they put in the work.

As I was updating the commitment list for this year's cross country and track additions, noted a couple of the seven red-shirt freshmen signed last season, all seven of whom were redshirted last year in both cross country and track, are no longer on the cross country roster:

Best wishes to both.

Just wanted to mention it looks like the women's cross country (and I assume track) teams may have had a transfer just pop up, as Lindsey Koch, listed as a sophomore in the results, was the Buffs 6th finisher in yesterday's Open ("B") team at the Wisconsin Nuttycombe Invitational, finishing 15th overall (per http://www.harriersolutions.com/xclive/openwomen.pdf).

From a little Google research, looks like the young woman is from Littleton, and seems to have started her collegiate running career at Creighton in 2015 (bio- http://www.gocreighton.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=141), while being at Regis Jesuit for high school. (Looks like she must be so new that there is no Buff bio page for her.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

If nothing else, seems like there might be (???) an interesting sports story re Ms. Koch, and I hope all (continues to) go well for her at CU both academically and athletically-
  • 1st noticed her name when she ran unattached and CONVINCINGLY won the Rocky Mountain Shootout late last month (by 22 seconds). Granted, the "varsity starters" were at another meet this year, but she still beat some solid Buff talent at that race. (Fun (admittedly total trivial) questions from a fan- Did she join the team after that result? Was it a rehearsal for the coaching staff? Or, is the team just late in adding her to the roster on cubuffs.com? (The cubuffs article about the Shootout doesn't mention her as having any Buff team affiliation at that point- http://www.cubuffs.com/news/2017/9/30/cross-country-wins-both-rocky-mountain-shootout-titles.aspx.))
  • Compared to most runners who end up at CU, she looks to have had a pretty "quiet" high school running time, with no state or even regional appearances showing up on the track. She does look to have improved every year in XC, peaking with a 23rd place finish in the 5A state cross country championships her senior year (per athletic.net). (her high school cross country and track results can be found at https://www.athletic.net/CrossCountry/Athlete.aspx?AID=3804529#/L0 and https://www.athletic.net/TrackAndField/Athlete.aspx?AID=3804529#/L0 .)
  • Her result in Wisconsin was a little below what the Rocky Mountain Shootout finish would indicate, as she did defeat at least 3 of the Buffs at the Shootout who finished ahead of her in the Cheese State. However, per the 2015 Creighton stats (http://www.gocreighton.com/custompages/w-crosscountry/15ccresults.pdf), she only ran in 2 early season races there, so this may have been the biggest/ most crowded race she'd ever run in, and even those smaller Creighton races were over two years ago. Therefore, other issues (dealing with the crowded trails, overdoing the pace early due to adrenaline, etc..) could have caused her Wisco result rather than an indication of her fitness/ speed level. (Of course, I also have no idea what the coaches were looking from its runners in the Shootout, so that may also have contributed to Ms. Koch's win there?)
With the Buffs GREAT depth on the women's side this season (I wouldn't be shocked if all 7 Buffs chosen for NCAA's earn All-American status with top 40 overall finishes), and Ms. Koch's training maybe being a little behind those who have been training with the team since summer, assume she won't be looked to contribute to the top traveling (top 7) team this season when the NCAA races start up next month, but it will be interesting to see how she develops over the next couple seasons. (The team is allowed to bring 10 per gender to the Pac 12 Championships, so assume she might (???) have a chance to make that team based on her Shootout win, although maybe not (???) if the coaches go more off the Wisconsin results.)

Well, this looks to me like Jaden Newsome may be planning on transferring out of CU VB. Post on VolleyTalk fits her to a T
http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/72089/setter-looking-transfer-permission-contact
including the posters board name of "mrskkn" when Jaden's bio says her mother is Kristi Newsome. We know that Jaden was #36 in the 2017 Senior Ace list and we know she is on a Power 5 roster and we know she red-shirted this past season. She also didn't seem to fit in on the Buffs since she was beaten out as starting setter by Brynna DiLuzio and the Buffs have another Senior Ace setter coming in the class of 2018, Jenna Ewert ranked at #72.

I was speculating with another fan just the other day (during halftime at the WBB Westminster game) how the coaches would resolve the setter questions for the upcoming season. Jaden transferring would simplify the situation for the coaches and probably be the best move for her as a player.

Jaden Newsome transferring to Mizzou

Red-shirted this past season, so we couldn't watch her play, but seemed to keep a positive influence on the bench. As a highly rated Prepvolleyball.com "Senior Ace" (#36 overall for her class), obviously has showed lots of potential. Wish her only the best as a Tiger.

From the Volleytalk forum transfer thread (http://volleytalk.proboards.com/thread/71737/d1-transfers-2018?page=15)- Also wanted to mention regarding Pac 12 volleyball transfer news- VERY tough break for OSU, as their Pac 12 freshman of the year winner this past season (who must have been BARELY selected over the Buff's Ms. DeLuzio), setter Kylee McLaughlin, has decided to transfer from Corvallis to the U. of Oklahoma (which doesn't have much of a vball tradition). (She is from a Dallas suburb, so the thought is she must have wanted to move back closer to home.)

Taylor Joachim, a redshirt sophomore this season, announced on Instagram last night that she will be transferring in the fall to DU and will have two years of eligibility to play at DU.

Looking at her stats on cubuffs.com, she played 17 minutes in her two seasons at CU.

Hopefully, DU will be a better fit for her.

As mentioned in the 2018 Olympic Sports' signing period thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/20...-soccer-2-7-regular-4-11.129780/#post-2379338 ), post #24, a soccer transfer was announced by the team (see below instagram) in 5'3" forward/ midfielder Sofia Weiner, who must have red-shirted last season at her prior school Virginia (who ended up ranked #9 in the country), as the insta says she still has 4 years of eligibility. She is yet another soccer transfer coming "home" to Colorado, as she played high school ball and attended Evergreen HS, and played for the Colorado Rush club team.

Welcome and congrats to her!

A few things I could find for her-
Her Virginia bio - http://www.virginiasports.com/sports/w-soccer/mtt/sofia_weiner_1044632.html
(Some highlights from that- she was the #73 ranked recruit for her 2017 class per the IMG rankings. She also played for the Under 18 U.S. National team; Was named the Colorado high school player of the year after the 2017 season; She was named to the All-State (Colorado) 1st team in high school 3 times (2014, 2015 and 2017), and was 2nd team in 2016. Also looks like she is VERY strong academically, with quite a few honors there.)

Her topdrawersoccer profile - https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/club-player-profile/sofia-weiner/pid-56200 (They had her at 3 stars. Also, from her soccer honors tab, she had the following - U.S. Soccer Training Invite, ODP Regional Team, ODP State Team, Team Captain, National Team Roster - U16, PDP Invite, iD2 Selection, ECNL Event Award.)

Topdrawersoccer also named her to the spring 2017 high school All West-Region team- https://www.topdrawersoccer.com/hig...hs-girls:-teamsnap-spring-all-region_aid42114. (Note- Most of the big western states (California, et al) must play soccer in the fall, as all the players in this list are from Colorado.)

Her high school stats (for some reason, her senior year stats are in a different page, even though it looks like she was at Evergreen HS. Looks like it may have been caused by a roster # change.) - http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/sop...MAAmVebBJg/gendersport/girls-soccer-stats.htm and http://www.maxpreps.com/athlete/sof...-Oz0u-e-FA/gendersport/girls-soccer-stats.htm .

Re new soccer transfer Sofia Weiner (see post above), one nice thing noted in the now- released official announcement article of the 2018 soccer class (http://cubuffs.com/news/2018/2/7/soccer-buffs-add-five-on-national-signing-day.aspx) is that Ms. Weiner is already at CU this spring semester, so will have time to integrate with the school and team, academically, socially and athletically (during the spring training period).

Noticed that volleyball now has a spring roster listed (http://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?path=wvball). Assuming it's not just a website error, looks like a second freshman from this past season, Anyse Smith, is no longer on the team. (Jaden Newsome, as was discussed earlier in this thread, is headed to Missouri.) Like Ms. Newsome, Ms. Smith didn't play at all this past season, so if she plans on continuing playing at another school, assume she would be a redshirt freshman there.

(Assuming, again, it's not just a website error)- Best wishes to her in whatever her future plans are.

Sorry to quote myself, but .... happened to see the below tweet, which looks to have Ms. Smith as one of the players in the picture. And, looking at the 2018 spring roster, she is now showing (back?) on the team. Impossible for me to know if it was a change of heart, website error not having her listed for awhile, or ????.

In any case, glad she's still on the team!

Women's track and field looks to have picked up a rare JC transfer (especially for the Olympic Sports) for next season from hurdler/ sprinter Dani Johnson, who spent at least this year at San Diego Mesa College after going to high school at Cathedral Central, also in SD. (Per the tweet, she has 3 years of eligibiliy left.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Also noted in the thread about Coach Kenneally retiring, but per the below tweet the Buffs #1 singles tennis player from this past season, freshman Linda Huang, is transferring to Rice University. (She went 8-10 at #1 singles and 1-0 at #2 in 2018, and 1-7 at #1 in Pac 12 play.)

Best wishes to her in Houston.

Hadn't looked at it in a long time, but just noticed that the CU tennis roster has been updated for the 2018/19 season, and is showing a new transfer in, Monica Malinen (https://cubuffs.com/roster.aspx?rp_id=11886). She hails from Oulu, Finland and, most recently, Western Kentucky University. She will be a junior next season for the Buffs.

Welcome and congrats to her!

(Looks like she mainly played at #4 singles and #1 doubles for WKU.)
