Olympic Sports- Transfers (incoming and outgoing) and other roster news

For the 1st time I can remember in its ~7 years as a D1 program, looks like lacrosse has picked up a transfer, as grad transfer defender Kate White is joining the Buffs after spending her undergrad years at Dartmouth. (Sounds like the Buff history (she was an assistant here) for Dartmouth's head coach helped in this move.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

"
BOULDER — The Colorado lacrosse team has added another defender, graduate transfer Kate White, for the 2021 season, head coach Ann Elliott Whidden announced.

White joins the Buffs after playing the last four seasons at Dartmouth and will be attending graduate school in the fall. The Big Green was off to a 5-0 start this year and reached No. 9 in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association final poll. She played in a total of 33 games and earned 23 starts. In that time, she recorded 55 ground balls and 26 caused turnovers.

"We are really excited to add Kate to our program," Whidden said. "Kate and Dartmouth were off to an incredible start in her senior season. Our heart breaks for her, as it does for all the seniors who had their final year cut short. But we are so excited to be able to give her the opportunity to have one more season. Alex speaks so highly of Kate as a defender and person, we feel very lucky to be able to add Kate to our defense and expect her to make an immediate impact for us."

For her last season at Dartmouth, White played under the direction of first-year head coach Alex Frank, who was the associate head coach for the Buffs the prior four seasons. Frank is happy White will be continuing her lacrosse career with CU.

"Once we knew that our seniors were unable to continue their careers at Dartmouth, we were excited to support their future opportunities whether that be entering the workforce or pursuing a graduate degree and an opportunity to play at another university," Frank said. "I am happy that Kate White has chosen to attend the University of Colorado Boulder. She has worked tirelessly over the last four years in the classroom and on the lacrosse field, and I am pleased she is able to have an opportunity to continue to play. Having been coached by Kelsie Garrison and me, I have no doubt she will transition well into the Buffs system. I have the utmost respect for Ann Whidden and the University of Colorado Boulder and wish Kate continued success next year."

As I've also just noted in the recruiting thread, the ski team has just announced the 8 newcomers for its 2020/21 team. Included in that 8 is one transfer, men's nordic skier Sky Kelsey, who will be a junior after spending his early college years at the Univ. of Alaska- Anchorage (and is from the Anchorage area).

Once again, welcome and congrats to him!

Per the below, welcome and congrats to Andrew Kent, who will evidently be transferring from Georgia Tech to the Buffs for track and field and, maybe (???), cross country, for the 2021/22 academic year!

(Says he's from Atlanta, and has been majoring in Mechanical Engineering.)

A 13.47 5k is legit. Nice add for CU. Welcome!

With the number of talented young women, especially in the outside positions, I was assuming the volleyball team might have some movement.

Best wishes to Ms. Alcantara in Raleigh!

The NCAA, yesterday, looks to have relaxed rules on transfers for ALL sports, and institutes deadlines for when student-athletes need to notify their schools (assume that's just following the transfer portal procedures?) if they do intend to transfer.

One thing I've seen in prior rules on transfers has always been that the NCAA allowed conferences to have their own rules, especially for intra-conference transfers. For the Pac 12, my impression was that the default was that student-athletes had to sit out a year/ season after transfer from one Pac school to another. At least from a quick search for "conference" in the release and Q & A links below, I couldn't find anything that indicates conferences will be allowed to set up different rules this time.

Direct link - https://www.ncaa.org/about/resources/media-center/news/di-council-adopts-new-transfer-legislation

"
All Division I student-athletes will have a one-time opportunity to transfer and compete immediately beginning in the 2021-22 academic year, if legislation adopted by the Division I Council is ratified by the Division I Board of Directors. The board meets April 28.

The Council met via videoconference today and Wednesday.

The Council expanded the one-time transfer exception to all sports, which means student-athletes who play baseball, football, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s ice hockey have the same chance as all other student-athletes to transfer and play right away. If ratified by the board, the change is effective for student-athletes who have not transferred before and want to compete at a new school as early as this fall.

Council member Caroline Lee, the Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee vice chair, said the student-athletes she represents are “ecstatic” with the rule change.
...

Members also adopted deadlines for student-athletes to provide written notification of transfer if they want to compete immediately. The deadlines will be May 1 for fall and winter sport student-athletes and July 1 for spring sport student-athletes, but the Council also granted a blanket waiver for this year only that sets the date for all student-athletes as July 1. Members noted the May 1 deadline was just a month away, and the waiver would provide students additional time they might need to decide.

The dates were selected based on a desire to balance providing flexibility for student-athletes to make informed transfer decisions with protecting the interests of students who don’t transfer but will be impacted by those who do.

Some exceptions to the deadlines would apply in cases of a head coaching change or canceled athletics scholarship before July 1.

Transferring college athletes also must meet progress-toward-degree requirements and be otherwise academically eligible to compete immediately after transfer, and both the head coach at the new school and the student-athlete must certify that no tampering took place. Schools cannot object to schools to which a student-athlete wants to transfer. The waiver process will continue to be available for students who do not meet the criteria of the one-time transfer exception or who wish to transfer more than once.

Student-athletes will have access to education regarding the impacts and implications of transferring, including academic requirements and financial aid policies. An online module will be created to assist schools with ensuring student-athletes can access this education, which is intended to help student-athletes make informed decisions before entering the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Division I has been working on modernizing its transfer rules for some time. Several working groups have made some notable progress, including the 2018 change that eliminated the requirement that student-athletes get permission from their current school to speak with other schools. That change also created the Transfer Portal.

Back on April 5th, soccer announced a couple new members of its team for next season, one of whom is an incoming freshman, and one who is a transfer I wanted to post about here- 5'6" defender/ midfielder Hailey Stodden, from nearby Broomfield. She has been a Utah Ute her 1st 3 seasons, and I'd GUESS could have up to 2 years of eligibility remaining. (She was listed as a junior on the Utah roster this season, but doesn't looked to have played for them at all in 2021. Therefore, even if for some reason the "no eligibility used" rule I believe is in effect this season for most if not all NCAA sports doesn't apply in her case, assume she could use this past season as a regular redshirt year.)

OFFICIAL Welcome and congrats to her!

More on her:

Her Utah roster page - https://utahutes.com/sports/womens-soccer/roster/hailey-stodden/10795
(Although, as I mentioned above, she didn't play at all this past season, from this page it sounds like she started EVERY match for the Utes as a freshman and sophomore, and was named to the Pac 12 All-Freshman team after her 2018 season.)

A Bocopreps (by Pat Rooney) article after her transfer - https://www.bocopreps.com/2021/04/0...ley-stodden-a-huge-boost-for-cu-buffs-soccer/

Some outgoing transfer news:
  • Per the below tweet, golfer (and Boulder's Fairview High grad) Kelsey Webster is transferring from CU to Oregon State. (She was a junior this year, so should have 2 years of eligibility if she wishes to use them in Corvallis.)

  • Also, per my main source for middle distance/ distance runner track transfers (https://www.thestridereport.com/transfers), a couple women are moving on from Boulder, with Olivia Brooks moving back to her home state to attend and compete for Portland State (she's from Bend), while Emily Venters (who transferred to CU from Boise State after her freshman year) is shown as heading one state west to join the Utah Utes. (Ms. Brooks is listed as a senior on this season's roster, while Ms. Venters is listed as a junior.)
Wish only the best to all 3 at their new schools.

Looks like a few soccer student-athletes have moved on, as per the below tweets:
  • Last season RS-freshman backup goalie (RS-freshman last season) Megan Short has transferred to Southern Utah,
  • l:ast season freshman forward Hailey Harnish looks to be heading to Colorado College.
  • Last season sophomore forward Kyla Ferry has transferred to Washington.

Best wishes to them!

(Just based on comparing who was on last season's roster who's not in the recently posted 2021 one, it looks like last season freshman forward Fillipa Graneld (who's from Sweden) and goalie Emma Miller (who was a RS-freshman last season), may also have moved on, but I can't find a transfer location (if any) for them.)

Not surprised about most of these transfers in that they weren't in line to get a lot of playing time this season.

Curious that the official roster hasn't been updated with newcomers. It makes me wonder if there will be some new (over this summer) transfers coming in.

Just been looking at the soccer roster, and it looks like the team has picked up a transfer in (still) freshman midfielder Mackenzie Davis, who per her roster page attended but did not play in any matches at Baylor last season. Her high school years were spent at Thunder Ridge in Highlands Ranch, while playing club ball with Real Colorado.

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

The cross country (XC) roster is now out for this coming season (https://cubuffs.com/sports/cross-country/roster/2021?&sort=class). As I'd mentioned in the recruiting thread when mentioning a couple frosh adds, the XC and, I assume, track and field, teams are also showing a few new distance running transfers. This includes Andrew Kent, already known about and discussed in posts 184-186 above. However, the others I didn't know about. They are all listed as seniors, so assume some or all could be grad transfers:

  • Women's team:
    • Elle (formally Gabrielle) Orie, coming in from Cornell. Her hometown is Orchard Park, N.Y., and is listed as having gone to high school at Hardin Academy in Buffalo.

  • Men's team:
    • Brendan Fraser, who was at Notre Dame. He is from Pontiac Michigan, where he attended Pontiac Notre Dame Prep.
    • Charlie Sweeney, coming in from Western Colorado. He is from Owings, Maryland, where he attended Northern HS.
OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to all!!!

Just saw the below tweet, which made me look at the tennis roster in cubuffs, and it looks like it has been updated for the coming season, and there is one incoming transfer and two outgoing Buffs for the coming season:

  • 1st, in the good incoming news side, the roster is showing an incoming player in Caroline Pozzo (https://cubuffs.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/caroline-pozo/15503) joining the Buffs after spending 4 years at Northwestern. She is originally from St. Louis. (She was already listed as a senior on their roster last academic year, so guessing (???) she may be a grad trasnfer?.?)
  • On the not so nice news front (as a Buff fan anyways):
    • last year #1 singles player Sara Nayer , who would have been a senior this season, is no longer on the roster, so assume that, as the below tweet noted, she has moved on and will be at North Carolina State next season. (NC State haven't updated their roster yet, so I can't confirm 100% she's headed there or not.)
    • In addition, her fellow Aussie Tallulah Farrow, who was also a junior on the roster last season but did not compete in any matches per the stats, is also missing from this season's roster.
Welcome and congrats to Ms. Pizzo!

And, best wishes to Ms. Nayer in Durham, and to Ms. Farrow where ever her life's journey is finding her.

Ms. Pizzo's Northwestern roster page - https://nusports.com/sports/womens-tennis/roster/caroline-pozo/9284
(From that looks like she had nice 12-5 singles and 7-1 doubles records last season, with most of her singles matches being at #5. Note that Northwestern was a GOOD team last season, making it to the 2nd round of the NCAA tournament and ending up #21 in the ITA rankings (https://www.wearecollegetennis.com/2021/05/26/oracle-ita-division-i-women-team-rankings-may-26-2021/). (The Buffs ended up #61.))

Just noticed that at some point women's golf released its roster for the 2021-22 seasons on cubuffs.com, and a previously unknown name (at least to me) popped up, Diane Baillieux, who looks to be from Dongelberg, Belgium. Although the CU roster currently lists her as a freshman, a Google search indicates to me (and it seems to be confirmed via her Instagram post below) that she will actually be a grad student transfer, heading to Boulder after spending her undergrad years at Baylor.

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to her!

Ad I'd mentioned in the cross country season thread, Coach Wetmore mentioned in his pre-season press conference that there were 2 incoming women's transfers, only one of whom was showing up in the roster. (see posts 184-185 and 196 for the other incoming cross country (and I assume in at least some cases track and field) Buffs.)

There are now 2, with the newest (and I assume last?) transfer being grad transfer India Johnson, who is joining the Buffs after spending her undergrad years at Michigan State. Assuming she is well, it definitely looks like she could be part of the women's 7 runner varsity XC team, as she earned All-American status last season with a 35th place finish for the Spartans at the NCAA Championships, helping lead her team to an overall 4th place podium finish. (From full results at https://cubuffs.com/documents/2021/3/15/03_15_21_NCAAXC_WomensResults.pdf.) Before her college years, she hailed from Hilliard, Ohio.

Something happened since last April and now. Post #187 had Alcantara transferring to NC Sate but she is now on the roster of a juco in Florida

Just saw a tweet she made, and looks like she's transferring to the Cincinnati Bearcats.

Best wishes to her there!

As I mentioned in the volleyball off-season thread (https://www.allbuffs.com/threads/20...l-off-season-news-thread.149571/#post-3170783) yesterday night, Coach Mahoney posted a tweet (also shown below for convenience) yesterday indicating a new addition for next season. Now, per the Rich Kern's website (https://www.richkern.com/vb/recruits/indexsub.asp?Div=DI&VBYear=2022), I see the newest vball Buff looks to be 6'1" outside (AKA left-side) and opposite (AKA right-side) hitter Lexi Hadrych, who will be heading to CU from UCLA. With the Covid-19 (2020) season not counting for eligibility purposes for any NCAA D1 student-athlete, I believe she should have up to 2 years of eligibility remaining, as she played for 3 seasons with the Bruins (not including a red-shirt freshman 2018 season).

Welcome and congrats to her!

For more on her, her UCLA roster page - https://uclabruins.com/sports/womens-volleyball/roster/lexi-hadrych/10598
(From that, she also spent her prep years in Southern Cal, having attended Vista Murrieta HS in Murrieta.)

Per my main source for distance running transfers, thestridereport.com (https://www.thestridereport.com/transfers ), looks like the men's cross country and track and field teams have picked up a transfer for the 2022/23 academic year from the Univ. of Wisconsin, Seth Hirsch. (He attended HS in Omaha.) Since he already shows as a senior in the Wisconsin rosters I linked to below, assume he'll be a grad transfer with one year of eligibility for all 3 seasons (cross country, as well as indoor and outdoor track and field).

Per the results from this past weekend's Big 10 Outdoor Track and Field Championships (https://live.pttiming.com/?mid=5020). he helped the Badger's scoring by finishing 6th in both the 5000M and 10000M. He was also his team's 3rd finisher, 84rh overall, at the 2021 NCAA Cross Country Championships last November.

Welcome and congrats to him!

OFFICIAL welcome and congrats to goalkeeper Lindsey Smith, who will be joining the soccer team next season after spending her 1st 2 years at Memphis!

From the article I linked to below, assume she could have up to 4 years available. (Per that, she didn't play at Memphis in her 2 years, and assume those could count as one redshirt and one Covid-19 year.)

BOULDER—Head coach Danny Sanchez announced the signing of transfer goalkeeper Lindsey Smith on Tuesday. Smith will join the Buffaloes in the fall and will be ready for the 2022 season.

Smith, a native of Toledo, Ohio, spent her first two seasons at the University of Memphis without appearing in a match.

Smith landed at Memphis after a four-year career at Saint Ursula Academy in Toledo. The 6-foot keeper earned four varsity letters and was First Team All-Conference and All-District her senior season. Smith helped the Bulldogs to conference titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020.

Smith played club soccer with Pacesetter Soccer Club and the Greater Toledo Football Club. She spent seven seasons with PSC and played her final club season with GTFC. PSC won the 2017 and 2018 State Cup, while GTFC won the Cup in 2019.

The addition of Smith adds to CU's depth at the goalkeeper position, joining incumbents Dani Hansen and Bella Grust.

Per the below Instagram post, the women's cross country and track and field teams have picked up a new Buff for next academic year in distance runner Bailey Hertenstein, who will be coming to boulder from Indiana U. (Bloomington). Per IU's roster, she originally hails from Lithia, Florida.

Even though listed as a senior on Indiana's roster (see link below for her page), per thestridereport.com (thanks to them for alerting me of her transfer), she'll have 2 years of eligibility remaining in all 3 seasons in which she can compete (cross country, and indoor and outdoor track and field) as she begins grad school.

Already a 2 time All-American in cross country (finished 31st at the NCAA Championships in 2019 as a sophomore and 28th in 2020 as a junior), she should quickly help out next season on the dirt. On the track, looks like she's earned solid times in distances from 800M-5000M. (She easily earned times that qualified for NCAA preliminaries in both the 1500M and 5000M the past 2 seasons. However, this season, can't see where she competed either at Prelims or at the Big 10 Championships, so assume she either decided not to compete due to her transfer plans, and/ or is recovering from injury.)

Welcome and congrats to her!

Only qualifier from IU? Wow. My best buddy from high school ran cross country and track at IU back in the day and won a Big 10 Team Championship, along with a number of top 3 team finishes.

In a sport which often seems to have transfers, here's the 1st outgoing transfer I've heard of FROM CU this year..

Best wishes to Ms. Barton.

Looks like a nice pickup for the men's track and field team, as a solid sprinter (seems to be most successful in the 400M), James Milholen, has signed on to join the Buffs next season after spending 3 years at Arkansas. With the Covid-19 year, I'd GUESS he has 2+ years of eligibility in both indoor and outdoor seasons if he and the coaches wish it. (Looks like he originally hails from Bentonville, Arkansas.)

OFFICIAL Welcome and congrats to him!
