Watching Utah State at New Mexico it seems that Albuquerque has the same issue with piss poor fan support as CSU. At least UNM has the excuse of their football team being bad for quite some time but CSU has that new stadium right there in town. Meanwhile looks like a good crowd in Boise today. I also saw where Wyoming set a new season attendance record. Kind of odd that good-sized cities like Albuquerque, Fort Collins, and San Diego don't draw well for college football.

UNM is a basketball school to its core. Great arena and fan support for hoops.

Traditionally UNM basketball has owned that town.

They have had a few seasons below what the fans expect and attendance down some but still pretty good.

According to NCAA figures for 21-22 (most recent easy to find.)

SDSU led the MWC at 11,331, 30th in the nation.
UNM was 8,697

For comparison
Colorado 6,955
CSU 6,174
Northern Colorado 1,137
Denver 793

1st in the nation is Syracuse at 20,017
8th Kansas 16,253
18th Arizona 13,414

Of the top 30 biggest attendance programs biggest number are concentrated in the Midwest and Northeast.

UNM got a big win last weekend to bounce Fresno from MWC title contention.

Air Force is going to another bowl......but I don't feel like I'm being far fetched if I say that's a fairly ugly 8-4.

Yes, always has been and a big reason why the got the Final 4 in '83 and regularly get Regionals or First/Second round games. It's just too bad that some of these MWC schools can't draw at least halfway decent crowds for football.

The Pit (UNM's home arena) has been a notoriously tough place for the visitors. When the Lobo's are good it routinely sells out.

The program is trying to build itself back into prominence after a disastrous stretch under former coach Paul Weir. They had an assistant coach arrested for drunk driving, athletes who had legal issues with domestic violence and even a shooting.

I have always been puzzled by how UNM can't get their act together in football. They don't have any other competition in the market, aren't far from recruiting centers in Texas, and play in a league that has enough weak programs that building to a bowl level program isn't that hard to do.

They have simply never had the commitment from the school administration which has translated into not getting much commitment from significant donors. It seems like a major opportunity missed because with any kind of consistent success they should be able to fill that stadium.

That shooting was by an NMSU player but it took place on the UNM campus when the NMSU basketball team was in Albuquerque for a game between the 2 schools

The identified shooter was from NMSU but the incident involved players from both schools. There was another incident in which UNM students were associated with a shooting involving a highly rated basketball recruit from New Mexico. It didn't turn into a lot legally but UNM players were associated with the incident.

Overall they just had a very toxic culture that needed a thorough cleaning out.

OK, I didn't think the victim (Travis) was a UNM player although it wasn't clear.

They have no money. That's why Danny Gonzalez will likely get another year.

Texas with a big lead at halftime and Oregon is up 2 scores on OSU. It's pretty amazing that the top 8 teams have avoided the big upset this year. Of the 3 losses in the top 8, 2 are to each other and Texas' loss is to #13 OU.

The incident involving NMSU player Mike Peake who was shot on the UNM campus was blamed on non-players including Travis but there was a lot of rumor around that players were at least associated with the incident and the people directly blamed for the shooting but the media didn't put much attention on this as it was kept fairly quiet.

They also had 4* recruit JB White shot and killed before he got to campus. There isn't reason to believe that players on the team were involved but the circumstances around the shooting were such that they didn't help the reputation of the program. Alone the incident probably wouldn't have reflected on the program but combined with the other stuff going on it didn't help.
