Shough is 6'5 220 with a big arm, and runs like the wind. His upside on day 3 absolutely dwarfs Shedeur's.
The Gabriel pick is how GMs get fired. Sanders made way more sense there.
Paxton Lynch was tall, strong, fairly fast and had a strong arm. Ask Josh McDaniels and Tebow's upside dwarfed the other QBs in his draft.
If you are looking for a RB, a WR, a LB, a NT, pay attention to the measurables. If a guy isn't elite in he measurables he likely isn't going to be elite at his position.
QB is a whole different thing. Payton Manning had a weak arm and didn't run well. Ryan Leaf in constrast had all the measurables. Manning only threw for 68,000 more yards and 525 more touchdowns in the pros than Leaf did. Tom Brady didn't have a rocket arm, Joe Montana had to set and step into it if he wanted to hit someone 30 or more yards downfield.
Shedeur can easily make all the throws he needs to make to be highly successful in the pros. He isn't going to run like Lamar but he has enough mobility to avoid a rush and buy time to throw. He isn't tall but has had no problem in college seeing over the line and had very few passes batted down.
I don't believe in any way that there was an "organized" plan to avoid drafting Shedeur nor do I beleive that the league office in any way had anything to do with it.
Rather I can see it as another extreme example of the kind of thinking that despite the structure of the draft and the salary cap and the scheduling system favoring bad teams the bad teams continue to be bad and the good teams continue to be good.
I have no question in my mind that had Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or a number of other consistently successful teams needed a QB Shedeur wouldn't have lasted past the second round and likely would have been gone in the first.
Those teams knew that there would be a degree of a circus surrounding him but they are confident in their ability to manage the circus. Did Green Bay not have to deal with a circus having first Farve, then Rodgers with both of them there overlapping for a period of time? Green Bay didn't need a QB at the time but drafted Rodgers knowing that he was a different personality but also knowing that he could in time win them games.
The losers and control freaks in the NFL, those coaches and GMs who know their teams are bad and they are on the fringes of getting fired are also the ones who are the control freaks. No player can be a bigger influence than they are, it is their team, their way. This is how the Broncos ended up spending first round picks on Tim Tebow and Paxton Lynch, guys who "had the measurables", "looked the part," but could be counted on comply with managements every request (Except to spend time learning how to be a pro QB in Lynch's case.) Tebow was a circus but he was a "Yes sir" man to his coaches.
Shough and Gabriel are the kinds of picks that get coaches fired.
No guarantees but Shedeur is the kind of pick that can get a coach a super bowl. Unfortunately most of the coaches and GMs that need a guy like him are too afraid of him challenging their power so they resort to justifying picks with "measurables."
