Shedeur Sanders - 2023-25 Tracking History Thread - Drafted by the Cleveland Browns (NFL)

Vic says that he has insider info on why Shedeur fell. He cites two things. First, evaluators view sacks as a QB stat and not an OLine stat. They were really concerned over how many sacks Shedeur took. Second, they believed that Prime was padding Shedeur’s stats by gearing the offense to make him look good.

I get the sack issue. It was troubling watching Shedeur taking sacks time and time again. And not just sacks but huge sacks. Twenty and thirty yard sacks.

The padding issue is a little more difficult for me to wrap my head around. Shedeur and our receivers were our strength. We had 3 receivers drafted! Of course we were going to throw the ball! I think that’s a criticism where Prime being Prime and being Shedeur’s dad hurt Shedeur.

Sounds amazing for an Offensive Lineman. What do they evaluate them on? Did they think we had an awesome run game as well?

I think their point is that when protection breaks down, which IS on the OLine, they want a QB to have the awareness to get rid of the ball. I mean, with today’s rules, there is rarely a reason not to get rid of it.

So, at a party yesterday, a neighbor clown of mine, who is a CSU Ram fan, started telling someone "did you see the letter that Shedeur sent to the NFL"... What letter? WTF is he talking about? I called him out on it and he said it was "out there" and of course didn't engage further. I told him that I hadn't seen this and I read a lot.... Did I miss something?

Looking forward to seeing Vic fight with everyone on Twitter later today.

His fall had maybe 5% due to game film or physical traits

Anonymous sources in the NFL will say all sorts of things. Im willing to acknowledge we overestimated him as a first round QB, but anyone suggesting the sacks and offense he played in being the primary reasons for sliding to the 5th is an idiot, which Vic Lombardi very much is when it comes to anything outside of the Nuggets at this point in his career.

How dare Prime build a team to suit one of it's best players at the most important position. . . this is unprecedented stuff, never before has a coach built around their QB.
From 1 very fortunate win to winning 9 games 2 years later. Of course it was a roster with a number of holes and spotty depth. Prime ran things through 2 playmakers who were at the top of their positions in the college game because he's not an idiot.

I give it about a 10% chance that Vic will suggests Dave Logan to be the next Nuggets HC.

Shough is 6'5 220 with a big arm, and runs like the wind. His upside on day 3 absolutely dwarfs Shedeur's.

The Gabriel pick is how GMs get fired. Sanders made way more sense there.
Paxton Lynch was tall, strong, fairly fast and had a strong arm. Ask Josh McDaniels and Tebow's upside dwarfed the other QBs in his draft.

If you are looking for a RB, a WR, a LB, a NT, pay attention to the measurables. If a guy isn't elite in he measurables he likely isn't going to be elite at his position.

QB is a whole different thing. Payton Manning had a weak arm and didn't run well. Ryan Leaf in constrast had all the measurables. Manning only threw for 68,000 more yards and 525 more touchdowns in the pros than Leaf did. Tom Brady didn't have a rocket arm, Joe Montana had to set and step into it if he wanted to hit someone 30 or more yards downfield.

Shedeur can easily make all the throws he needs to make to be highly successful in the pros. He isn't going to run like Lamar but he has enough mobility to avoid a rush and buy time to throw. He isn't tall but has had no problem in college seeing over the line and had very few passes batted down.

I don't believe in any way that there was an "organized" plan to avoid drafting Shedeur nor do I beleive that the league office in any way had anything to do with it.

Rather I can see it as another extreme example of the kind of thinking that despite the structure of the draft and the salary cap and the scheduling system favoring bad teams the bad teams continue to be bad and the good teams continue to be good.

I have no question in my mind that had Kansas City, Philadelphia, San Francisco, or a number of other consistently successful teams needed a QB Shedeur wouldn't have lasted past the second round and likely would have been gone in the first.

Those teams knew that there would be a degree of a circus surrounding him but they are confident in their ability to manage the circus. Did Green Bay not have to deal with a circus having first Farve, then Rodgers with both of them there overlapping for a period of time? Green Bay didn't need a QB at the time but drafted Rodgers knowing that he was a different personality but also knowing that he could in time win them games.

The losers and control freaks in the NFL, those coaches and GMs who know their teams are bad and they are on the fringes of getting fired are also the ones who are the control freaks. No player can be a bigger influence than they are, it is their team, their way. This is how the Broncos ended up spending first round picks on Tim Tebow and Paxton Lynch, guys who "had the measurables", "looked the part," but could be counted on comply with managements every request (Except to spend time learning how to be a pro QB in Lynch's case.) Tebow was a circus but he was a "Yes sir" man to his coaches.

Shough and Gabriel are the kinds of picks that get coaches fired.

No guarantees but Shedeur is the kind of pick that can get a coach a super bowl. Unfortunately most of the coaches and GMs that need a guy like him are too afraid of him challenging their power so they resort to justifying picks with "measurables."

He would have been a 1st rounder if he didnt bungle his pre-draft stuff (his dad didn’t help either)

I don't believe I misevaluated Sanders. I've watched every game from his first at Florida A&M to his last in San Antonio against BYU. I believe they misevaluated Sanders.

I also believe he has 4 elite traits
Football IQ
Feel for the game
Toughness
Intangibles

I also believe he has a skill that translates at an exceptional level day 1 to the NFL which is quick pass game, which is like the PnR in the NBA. No shock, Dillion Gabriel is exceptional at it too. Clearly, something Coach Stefanski valued. Bo Nix also had it, and it shone in the NFL.

Shedeur had a crap process but that shouldn't change how we view him.

Let's not act like he wasn't in the top 3 talks. We know for a fact he was even with the Titans.

The Nuggets and chicken.

And I wonder why he did it. I think it's obvious that the Sanders family made some mistakes here.
I mean his dad cornered the market on Primetime and swagger and was obviously influential during the process. Shedeur followed suit and really made a name for himself and a lot of money with his persona in college. So why not continue what worked, right? Clearly the NFL disagreed and put their foot down and made an example out of him

Seems pretty clear the NFL said there is only one brand, and it is the NFL brand

Also, to all the experts here, How long until Shedeur is an NFL starter? Will it be next year? For the first time in a very long time, I am mildly interested in watching some NFL games. Never thought it would be the Cleland Browns

Maybe he wins the job in camp (although I think that's unlikely given the presence of 2 vets in Flacco and Pickett), maybe he start this season once they start cycling through QBs, maybe he starts in 2-3 years or maybe he never starts and doesn't make the roster.

This is the first time in his life where he's an underdog.

I actually think it's more about Prime's comments in many interviews over the past year about how Shedeur and Travis are for sure going in the top 5 and there will be certain organizations they won't be playing for. CP was very open and up front about that for a long time, but that talk really went away quickly over the past few months and I'm going to assume someone got in his ear and said he better knock that **** off.

I think the overwhelming reason for his slide is due to their arrogance around Shedeur not playing for certain organizations. The NFL model relies on bad teams getting to pick the best players and Shedeur and Prime represent the biggest threat to that model in the new era of CFB and the NFL squashed that.

none of this was a good look for the program. I think a lot of it was just pure bull****, honestly. but, I hope 2 puts his head down and works his ass off and wins, wins, wins. that will be the best revenge.

also another anonymous thing from NFL scouts that kept coming up and made me cringe--- they cited how simple and easy the offense we ran is.

that could mean a few different not-good things--- I mean shurmur knows. how to install an offense, so why were we doing that?

anyhow, go kick some ass, SS. forever buff.

I keep having to post this. The only things that matter with QBs are:
1) Can they get the ball to the right place on time
2) Can they own a huddle
3) Can they avoid turnovers

Shilo and Shedeur said on a stream that they were getting agents, because their dad was their agent and that didn’t work out too good for them.

My primary concern is that Kevin Stefanksi and Andrew Berry might not even want him. I know they came out and said that Haslam had nothing to do with it, but IMO, taking Gabriel over Shedeur kind of says a lot about how those two individuals view the two QBs.
If they want to be working in their current jobs in the NFL they had better not ignore him. Joe Flacco or Pickett have already proven they aren't the guy to elevate a bad team.

I give Flacco 5-8 games then he will be on the bench and the coaches will be in job saving mode, again. There is always someone who get elevated to QB 1 status for the draft (Cam Ward this year) but unless they want to tank for Arch Manning this staff needs to start winning. And I doubt that the Coaches will be around another year if they are in position to get Manning.

Tyler warren also got a prank call, apparently.

When I see the info coming out with Shedeur I think they just plain overplayed their hand and thought they had something when in fact they didn't.

This is from Bruce Feldman and meshes with what I read elsewhere. Some teams felt like they weren't interviewing him, but the other way around. I guess we'll see how Shedeur handles being the underdog for the first time in his life.
All that well could be, but it doesn't fit with all the mocks having him going in the top 10 until a couple of days before the draft, then at worst them saying there was an outside chance he'd fall to the Steelers at #21.
