The 2021-2022 Coaching Carousel

I think the main reason this carousel is spinning so quickly is because a lot of these guys were on the downward trend but some of these schools didn't want to fire during the COVID year. AD's stuck between a rock and a hard place so it makes sense to me.
Absolutely. Not because of any kindness or sentimentality during a pandemic, but because the optics and politics were horrible for paying a multi-million buyout to a coach while universities are doing layoffs, pay freezes and non-renewal of contracts.

I don't think that really keeps him off the market this carousel. PSU just protected themselves so they don't lose him without a solid payday after this season, but just means USC would have to pony up $12m + whatever it takes to lure him to LA.

Possible, but I think USC and LSU (aka the big name vacancies we have known about for a bit) are out. They've had 2 months to make their pitch and they either never did or this is his answer. Never say never tho and who knows who pops up, but I think the likely scenario is that PSU bought themselves a year.

I really think that USC is gonna make a solid run at Pete Carroll and bring him back to LA! He has so much cred and if he can really get the Assistants and run the program like a mini-NFL operation, they would be back on top, which would suck

Absolutely needs to be a top notch recruiter to go against Kirby. Cristobal or Tucker seem like the only ones that would check that box. Maybe lane?

Would you hire Cristobal after that egg his team laid on Saturday night on national TV?

He can recruit, but that program is softer than ****ing Charmin.

Whoa. Wait. Hold on a second.

They’re interviewing other candidates before their existing head coach actually leaves?
Dykes has been the leader in the clubhouse for that gig since it opened. He's taking it. I'd expect that to become official after SMU and TCU both finish their seasons.

I agree with you on there being changes in Seattle, but I don't think Carroll's going back to USC. He's 70. I can't see a guy who is that old wanting to play the recruiting game after being in the NFL for over a decade. Guessing he retires or takes another gig in the NFL.

Carroll back to USC would be a head scratcher. I can see the logic behind it, but those kinds of hires very rarely work out. He’s been out of the college game for a long time. With the money USC has, I could see them making a big push to hire Sean MaVay, though.

Because I have a different opinion of cristobal than you do. He is going to win 10 games again this year and is the best recruiter in the conference as a head coach. He also recruits the lines very well.

Pete Carroll is 70 years old

and wasn't it Carroll's fault USC got fined for recruiting violations ?

Schmiolations
He would be a CEO/GM and provide stability and they would likely pull back many of the kids that are heading out east
Agreed a younger guy would be great, but I could see Bohn and Carroll putting it together, because I think the Seahawks need a new voice also

One, you talk about him winning 10 games like he's been doing that at Oregon regularly. He's done it ONCE. Two, Oregon State's no gimme. Smith has done an excellent job there, and Oregon could easily come out flat because their CFP dreams are now over with the ass-whipping they took in SLC. Three, we're talking about Oregon. They have a hell of a lot more resources than a program like.......this one does, and they should be demanding more out of him than just winning 9-10 games a year. They've got what they need to be as dominant as Alabama, Georgia, and Ohio State are in this sport.....but when you lose to 3-9 Stanford and get absolutely housed by Utah-that lies squarely at the feet of MC. He might be the greatest recruiter in the history of the sport, but his teams typically blow a game or two that they shouldn't. Stanford this year. Arizona State in 2019. Arizona in 2018.

Jesus ...his buyout is LESS than Dorell's
Nah, PSU gave Franklin a fully guaranteed contract just like Dorrell, but they also covered their ass financially if another program decides to poach him this year. There are only a few programs out there who would be willing to drop $12m just to satisfy PSU, and then pay $8.5-$10m/year for his salary, on top of the massive AC pool he would likely want.

Florida, LSU and USC are certainly 3 candidates who could pay that if they really wanted, but as jens said, it's unlikely at this point, otherwise Franklin likely doesn't even go to the negotiating table with PSU. He'll be a hot candidate next year for some program, though.

Okay well I think they will win against oregon state and he will have won 10 games again. That would be two out of three years that he has won that many games when he had the opportunity to. Last weekend was bad for sure. Stanford officiating was a complete joke. But to sit here and act like he is garbage is not a very good take. Oregon has resources but they aren’t on the same level as the programs you listed. Cristobal is exactly the guy you want to go head to head against Kirby on the recruiting trail.

Assholeskin is the same guy who thinks his takes on Mel Tucker all season are now justified because of the Ohio State game. Nothing to say of the 9-2 record and #12 ranking in year two. If a coach isn’t winning a Natty in year 2 or 3, he’s not a good coach

They don't need to be on the same level as those three. Why? They've got a lot more resources than pretty much everyone in this league. As far as Stanford.......they're likely heading for 3-9. They're awful. The officiating is an excuse......especially when both Washington State and Oregon State (who don't have Oregon's talent) beat Stanford.

I could think of guys I'd rather have going against somebody like Smart-Ryan Day, James Franklin, and Lincoln Riley (all of whom have higher ranked recruiting classes than your boy Mario does) all come to mind here.
