UCLA Game Week -- Official Thread (8:30 on ESPN2)

UCLA shut down A&M when they needed to. If you remember that game, A&M had two running backs that were ripping off 8-15 yard carries. Once UCLA woke up, those guys stopped being as effective.
This game concerns me. I hope we have our A game for once this season. UCLA can do a lot of damage.

aTm's starting QB went out and the backup can't throw the ball.

any team left on the schedule can beat us. the p12 is tough and balanced. rosen is for real and ucla has athletes. their defense does look awful but we will need to play well and avoid mistakes to win. i think the Buffs come out and beat their arses, wire to wire.

Looking at the UCLA stats I saw Nathan Starks name. I had totally forgotten about him. He played at Cherry Creek for awhile, IIRC, and was like one of the top RBs in the country coming out of HS. Had offers from everyone. Seems like he has not had the career that was envisioned coming out of HS. He is getting a few reps in a backup role.

That whole situation was quite interesting to follow when he was suspended for transfer rules and CHSAA for awhile would not reinstate him. I think he has had a similar career at UCLA as we have seen with Michael Adkins here.

Get pressure on Rosen, get a few turnovers, and let UCLA make the mistakes they inevitably make and I think we have a good chance.
We haven't put pressure on CSU, Texas St. or UNC. What makes you think we will put pressure on Rosen?

They had 3 sacks against CSU, 6 against TSU, 1 against UNC, and 0 against UW. UCLA's OL isn't great, so hopefully it's more of a CSU-TSU type effort from the pass rush.

I'll take that without reservation. If he's better than Kordell and Detmer, I'll be a happy fan.
For me it's not about his talent. It's about his game management. But as for completion percentage, we are running a really controlled passing game throwing a lot of high percentage passes. That said, I really believe Montez can be special.

I actually don't think 65% is all that impressive in an offense like CUs. So many high percentage plays that are just an extension of the run game. I'd like to see his "air yards per completion" stats, as I think that will paint a more accurate picture. I also think those numbers say more about the history of CU QBs than it does about Montez being any kind of special. He's an average P5 QB right now that has the chance to be truly special ina year or two if he continues to develop and cut down on mistakes.

Suddenly I've come to the realization/belief that this is a really important game. That is probably because ucla looks more and more like a winnable game and because we really need to build some momentum and confidence. So this has become a very big game in my mind. It is one I considered a probable loss before the season. Now it's a possible win.

My thought is that while Montez hasn't blown us away yet so far this season, you can see the skills are there. The kid has only started 7 games, there will be growing pains, but in the end I think we will be looking at one of the best QBs in CU history.

You've just now realized that? They win this game, and I fully expect them to be competitive against WSU and Utah on the road later this year. Lose this game and I will immediately chaulk those up as losses.

Every time I get frustrated by Montez, I try to remind myself how infuriating Kordell was at times as a sophomore.
Kordell was frustrating the entire time he was at CU. Great athlete and he had the arm to make all the throws, but his foot work was so bad that I don't think I saw him complete more than 5, 10 yard out routes in his entire career at CU (and they threw them a lot). The ball would always sail way way high or and up in the turf five yards in front of the WR....definitely frustrating...but the things he could do with his legs, with crossing routes and on deep routes....made him special.
As for UCLA...I don't expect much this week, but I believe CU gets healthy next week.

the thing that frustrated me about Kordell was his inability to get UP for the big games. He had the nickname of sleepy. It really showed up against the nubs every season. He would then go like 0-10 before completing a pass.
Montez I believe rises to the occasion.
