We played like crap... Agree?

Yeah I only saw two bad throws from montez, the end zone pick and the ball at the feet of Ross. I thought he played pretty well, pissed about the Irwin suspension. I saw a lot of uneven playcalling tonight, short passes were absolutely killing CsU in the first half and they went away and then the read option was open in the third and they stopped in the middle of drives. Just some kinks to work out as the buffs consistently drove the all and flipped field position just couldn't finish.

Overall great to see special teams outside of the missed field goal play well. Awesome to see drew lewis flying around, he is the best athlete at backer we have had in a long time. Somewhat disappointed in the offensive line, albeit one starter missing. We need to get more push but what a performance by the defense, was not expecting that at all. Udoffia was being picked on but there were some lucky throws/catches in there as well. Oliver just put up a great performance against a great receiver. Pass rush was slow at times though,

CSU outgained us and two of the four offensive PI calls against CSU were borderline at best and one of those was a TD. CU dodged a bullet and won a game that it didn't really deserve to win. I'll take it but the D was far from lights out.
The TD that was called back was on a legit Illegal Hands To The Face penalty. The PIs will be criticized and that's fair, but those also weren't guaranteed points either. Plus you can also bet on CU's play calling changing up if the game were closer. I would have liked to have seen more deep shots in the 2nd quarter to put them away.

I loved how the P12N was trying to make excuses for their ****ty camera work in replays. "It's an NFL stadium so we can't do our normally excellent replay work!"

Regarding one of the PIs: Many people are calling the one down the west sideline heading south "borderline," and I completely understand why. The camera angle & replays were from middle field end zone and not the sideline. Now that I've mentioned that, the play was heading right towards my seat, and it was so obvious the push off was forceful and impactful. However, it looked like a brush off on the replay, so I totally understand the "borderline" talk on that one. I guess that's what you get when your game gets broadcast on a ****ty third tier network that only supplied a minimal amount of cameras. That said, I felt like two of the PIs were obvious push offs that impacted the play and should have been called. The other one, who the hell knows.

Glad for the W. The Buffs offense were hitting on all cylinders for about 15 minutes in the first half. Lindsay's TD run and the broken play where Montez hit Field in the end zone on the long ball were beautiful things.

The Black Out Boyz were very good last year on downfield blocking. Last night Bobo was the possession receiver who struggled to get YAC. He was catching the ball all alone without an other WR plowing the way. I am hoping to see a return of the WR blocking schemes being used more to trip up corners and spring additional yards.

Montez has some work to do. He is not shy about taking a shot down the field to Ross or Fields even when they are double covered. Montez was guilty of overthrowing and underthrowing recievers. He has got to get the TD to INT ratio better than 1:1 in order to be considered an elite P12 QB.

The lack of consistency between the magic 15 minutes of offensive play and the painfully long and unproductive second half was opposite of what I expected. The high powered offense added rust as the game wore on. CSU was plucky and refused to go away. That Rams D got their hands on Montez too much. It was CU's conservative second half play calling or CSU doing a good job covering the pass that led to some ugly Montez runs.

The Buff O leaned heavily on the Buff D to bail them out.

Getting Frazier and Irwin back will help. But there is stil a lot of work to be done for CU's WRs and QB to earn any more accolades about being top 5 in the nation.

CU's offense scoring only 17 points in a game isn't consistent with the preseason hype. That O machine can be a beautiful thing to behold. But it was only showing flashes amongst a bunch of stalled drives.

Back to film study. The expectation is for CU to start fast and finish strong. We didn't see that last night.

But a win is a win. And for that I am grateful.

We were okay for the first game of the season. The Washington game should be the true test for the buffs.

We'll get blitzed if we play like we did last night. We have to be a possession offense because stronger, faster teams will capitalize on our D if left on the field too long.

I agree that offense must get better. We have to go faster on offense. More RPO plays.

Here's BuffSurveyor's post game bs:
1. CU came in over confident. Should have been a route according to the hype.
2. The Rammies are getting to be a decent program. They'll win games this season. Good on them.
3. The Rammies beat themselves more than most CU fans may want to admit. CSU very well could have won that game.
4. The CU football team isn't as good as they think they are. Yet anyway.
5. The talent disparity between the two programs is narrowing. CSU's new stadium and facilities will be a factor in that.
6. Little brother is growing up, so use that as an advantage to promote CU football in the future.

Part of my bewilderment is that we hung 44 on them last year. That was also our first game. Yet nothing has really changed with our offense or their defense...so what gives? I'm not in the "a win is a win" camp. This team should be past that and if we want to compete in the Pac-12, a lot of stuff on O gotsta change.

Agree on all of these points. The fact the we had 1 good year and came in over confident is really stupid. Feel like you need multiple bowl seasons before you earn the right to do act and speak like they did this past week.

CSU with more total yards, first downs and got jobbed on 2 of the 3 PI calls. Other then the 1st quarter, I never felt CU was clearly the better team.

CSU is a good team, have talent, and now have great facilities. BTW, both CU and CSU being good is a good thing for football in this state.

Glad we won, lessons learned, now move forward.

Tldr. I didn't like how ultra conservative we got. Punting on their 35 with 2 yards needed on 3rd and 4th down should be fireable tbh. CSU got all the yards back on one play anyway ffs. I'm not full analytical guy because I know it can work against you like Oregon going for all those 2pt conversions last year and losing to Nebraska because of it. But this one is inexcusable.

I also didn't like Montez freaking out after that first INT. I know it happens but his composure is one of the only things I've been worried about and he didn't look very composed during that *****-fest.

The Lindsey toss play with Adkins instead was ugly, I hope we don't see that anymore. From CSU's side, I don't know why they didn't use Boddie more? Matthews was definitely running over us in the 2nd half as we wore down but Boddie scared me more. Still, our run defense was okay.

We got pressure up the middle, but I was expecting Coleman or McCartney to replace Gilbert's edge rush and we didn't get that at all. Callier was a nice surprise there but still. McCartney actually reminded me of '16 Gillam a little where he made a few plays (I think) but it also looked like his knees were locking up a little and he didn't look as freak athletic. Maybe that will change as he gets more conditioned.

Stevens was all class in a post game interview even tho the CSU reporters kept begging him to complain about the refs. I respect that he always got back up and delivered strikes. He played well enough to get a win against a better defense than we played against.

Oh well, 1-0!

Looked like a typical opener to me. Played well enough to win while being far from peak form.

Yup. Now that you've played someone (other than yourself) you begin to see where you are exposed and the things you need to work on. The problem is that there is not much that presents a real challenge between here and Sept 23 to tell if you fixed it...

I kind of like that Montez got humbled a little bit. He looked really good in the first quarter and, just maybe, got a bit overconfident. The pick in the end zone was a pass he never should've thrown. Without that we probably would've scored to go up by three scores. He needs to be smarter.

Didn't he throw a couple of picks against Oregon that let them back in the game? INT's are going to happen but some are worse than others and throwing them when you have a lead can shift momentum in a hurry.

We won. Thats what we wanted. The D looked solid and better then expected.
Both units will improve. I think the vanilla play calling was intentional.

I think part of what bothers people about the game is that it wasn't what most of us expected. I know I was thinking our offense (returning something like 9 starters) was going to move the ball at will and our defense might struggle to stop CSU. Instead it played out pretty much the opposite. We also didn't seem to be going balls out 110% effort (Lindsay running out of bounds for example, never thought I'd see that).

-Montez needs more game reps I think, he has the arm and feet, but doesn't feel pressure well and it seems his reads are questionable at times.
-Lindsay looked good in spite of the running out of bounds which is so not Lindsay to us. I'm glad he's playing it smart. I'd rather see him healthy all year than getting injured going for an extra yard or two.
-WRs disappointed, they seemed like they didn't progress from last season where they disappeared in the 2nd half of the season.
-OL was hit or miss. Irwin being suspended is obviously a big deal, but I wonder how much we were missing Alex Kelley, some missed calls on blitzes and backside pressures.
-DL had some highlights. Edwards got pushed around a bit, hopefully he gets better every week.
-I felt like Gamboa was MIA, Lewis was all over the place and seems to have a knack for blitzing. McCartney also didn't seem to flash much, possibly rusty after missing most of last year. Obvious highlight being Callier, he's going to play a lot this year
-DBs are a step down from last year, but I think there's potential back there. Udoffia might get picked on a lot so we'll see how much better he gets as the season progresses. Worthington seemed good, Oliver is really good.
-ST as a whole seemed good, kicking of course questionable. Next kicker must be a recruit from Scandinavia or else we'll be forced to bite the bullet and recruit an American kid that grew up kicking footballs and not soccer balls.

other random thoughts: we played like it was our first game and CSU played like it was a short week for them. We got a little lucky on some of those offensive PIs and they got a little lucky Mac seemed content to just vanilla this one out. Pretty sure we could've pushed it and scored more, but didn't. The key is 3-0 and we're 1 game into that goal.

I also had the UW game on in the background and they had a slow start against Rutgers too. The week 4 matchup might be a defensive snoozefest as their offense looked iffy. But a month from now both teams may have fixed a lot of issues on that front.

I can't really add much since I didn't see it. As far as calls, you play long enough, you'll be on both sides of the fence on that. Sometimes you'll get some breaks from refs, sometimes you'll get the direct opposite. Frustrating but, quite frankly, it's part of the game. I, more or less, knew what was going on in the 2nd half with play calling. They just wanted to get outta there with a W, probably why they went vanilla. Sometimes you gotta do that. Overall, just happy with the W. Time to go to work now.

Does anybody think that the buffs were vanilla because they were trying not to unleash the playbook? For Washington's sake?

To be somewhat fair, the ideal camera placement points for thoroughly covering the action are different if you have 8 cameras vs 15. And the camera placement points are hardwired into the stadium and can't really be changed.

I know the answer is to use 15 cameras, which would probably have happened if it was later in the season and the network was broadcasting 2-3 games this weekend instead of 6. But I also understand that it doesn't make sense to buy enough cameras and camera operators for one or two weekends a year when this is an issue.

I think we went vanilla because we were up 2 scores, Montez was rattled, and we needed some possession time to run some clock. Also to limit mistakes. If it was down to one score or less would have been different. We were laughing because it was 100% predictable Lindsay up the middle on first down the whole 4th quarter but an ugly win is better than any loss any day of the week.

This approach is a 180 degree turn-around from the comment captured by MacIntyre in the locker room a year ago beseaching his players to "not call off the dogs" in the 2016 drubbing of CSU.

A big part of the charm in The RISE was the culture of Mac making a statement by keeping the pedal to the metal. "Start Fast. Finish Stong. WTTF"

Yes, and I also think that CU coaches had little fear of CSU's O so they weren't afraid to play the field position game. There were multiple occasions where I was hoping for them to go for it on 4th and short and coach Mac elected to play it safe and punt every time.

Didn't know where to put this but hilarious story. Went to mile high station before the game to get beers, saw a CsU fan in shorts and some douchey ass cowboy boots. Just commented on how much of a tool he was. Anyways, go back after the game to get some beers and wait for the traffic to die down and call and Uber, we hear this loud ass thud behind us and look over and the same kid is face down on the floor knocked out cold. Apparently just passed out and smacked the front of his face on the ground and layed there for a good minute or so while the cops and paramedics came to help him out.

He did call off the dogs in 2016. We did almost nothing in the 2nd half, and could have very easily hung 70 on the Rams.

We played like garbage and WON. Now the real improvement can begin and we get two of our offensive starters back in the mix.

Get the W and give the coaches a ton of stuff to correct and harp on during film study this week? Sounds pretty much like the perfect scenario if you ask me. Would have loved to score way more points, but I think this offense needed to be humbled a bit. They have all the potential in the world, but it isn't just going to happen for them this year, they have to work for it.

I hope he feels it today...

When I first fired up the Uber app, it was going to be a $71 charge to get home. We grabbed two beers, kept checking, kept checking - sold for $37!

Kind of a amazing it can vary that much.

Nothing to do with the game itself, but, damn, we should be better than this.

Ya completely appalled as we walked back to our cars last night. Not sure if this was common in both CU and CSU lots, but that CU lot looked like a tornado ripped through it. Horrible.
The inside of Folsom looks like that after pretty much every home game. After the big home games, it looks like that within a 1/4 of the stadium in almost every direction.

People are pigs. More so when they are drunk.
