Who Should be the new QB Coach?

I disagree. I think QB is the one position where it really helps to have a coach who has played the position. It's hard to become an expert on coaching QB mechanics and unless you've been a QB who has absorbed that kind of coaching another former QB.
How many qb coaches at the p5 level or in the nfl actually played qb?

Okay. I'll bite and look at the Pac-12.

Arizona - Rod Smith played QB for Glenville State.

Arizona State - Billy Napier played QB for Furman.

California - Marques Tuiasosopo played QB for Washington.

Oregon - 2017 coach Marcus Arroyo played QB for San Jose State.

Oregon State - Brian Lindgren was an All-Sun Belt Conference QB for Idaho.

Stanford - Tavita Pritchard played QB for Stanford.

UCLA - Too lazy to search for who they just hired. 2017 QB coach was Jedd Fisch. Doesn't appear to have played football at the college level. His Wikipedia bio says, "He attended Florida almost solely for the opportunity to someday work for Florida head coach Steve Spurrier.[6]" His bio shows that he learned to coach QBs under a number of former QBs including Spurrier, Jim Harbaugh, Mike Shanahan and more.

USC - Tyson Helton played QB for Houston.

Utah - Troy Taylor played QB for Cal and the New York Jets.

Washington - The Huskies staff directory doesn't list a QB coach so I presume Chris Petersen coaches them. That is his background as a coach and he was a record setting QB for UC Davis.

Washington State - The Cougs staff directory doesn't list a QB coach. If Leach handles that himself then he would be only the second out of 11 who is not a former QB. Leach didn't play college ball at all.

Gus Malzahn moved from HS coach to OC at Arkansas. Granted, he had won a couple of state titles.
Funny thing about that... Many people at the time theorized Arkansas only hired Malzahn because they were trying to recruit his QB at the time, 2006 Gatorade High School Player of the Year, Mitch Mustain, who ended up signing and playing for Arkansas before he transferred to USC. The world now knows Malzahn was the better catch between the two. Malzahn only lasted one year at Arkansas, and Mustain transferred from there exactly one day after Malzahn announced his decision to move on to be the head football coach at the University of Tulsa.

Smith had QBs as a position responsibility at UW when he was there, and my guess is Bush Hamdan would coach their QBs next year-he played QB for Peterson at BSU.

As information-starved as we all are on this front, I'm sure when there is some news, it will spread quickly.

I guess I was just feeling something was going to pop!!!

I like the hire, experience is helpful, but recruiting is a question mark?

Roper was very close to being hired as the HC at Rice. Hopefully he still recruits Texas.

Roper appears to be a respected coach. He was hired a couple of times by Muschamp (Gators, then Gamecocks), but the USCe offense wasn’t very good and Muschamp knows this is his last opportunity as a major head coach, so he chose to shake things up. Personally, I think any OC would struggle under Muschump.

In any case, he’s a QB coach, not our OC. Looks to be a good hire in my opinion.

If a QB coach can develop QBs, he is then a good QB recruiter.
As I posted earlier, experience and the ability to develop a QB is the qualifications needed here.
We have inexperienced OCs.
Regardless, I doubt Roper is here for more than 1-2 years in any case.

This is as good a place as any. You old guys will recognize this. Every time I hear Roper's name, I think of Mr. Roper.
