Official 2020 Fall Camp Thread

I was actually going to say the same thing, but even under Brohm they haven’t won more than 7 games. Is that really their ceiling?
With the right coach I’d say a run like Cal had with Tedford might be the ceiling. Bowl games most season, a little over .500 in conference and one conference championship over the course of a good 10 year run.

It’s also a program that can just as easily piece together a decade of crap football with a series of bad hires.
 
1. You keep acting like momentum is a thing that can be accomplished without skilled salespeople as ACs. Who are these mythical assistants on staff that can spread the gospel of Dorrell? He may not be tied to them forever, but he is tied to them through the bulk of this recruiting cycle.
2. We will not contend for anything relevant this season. It seems like we have terrible upperclass options at QB. Why not give game run to a player who will be available when we return to relevant play in future seasons?
3. I agree that there’s a lot of difficulty handicapping this season, but bad is bad. This team will not win more than two games. Hoping we have a better record and not getting game time evaluations of players who will be here going forward is a big mistake.

1. Mythical assistants on staff who can spread the gospel of Dorrell......like Tavares Tillman and Alfred Pupunu (I'd have to go back Embree or Hawkins to find two worse AC hires) spread the gospel of Tucker?
2. Because you can't run a true freshman out there in an opener for a season that involved no Spring Ball.
3. If Sam Noyer impresses, we can surprise.

Your biases on Sark are showing. Dig deeper.
 
You act like what you start with is all you will ever become - did you peak in elementary school or something? Quit hating on a guy before he had even had a chance and let’s see what he can do. Any coach who is “known” by some people was at some point “unknown” to those same people.
We have a very good idea of who DK is. Why was he fired from UCLA, why didn't he get other college HC jobs.
He is a good man and a good coach. He failed at UCLA because he and his staff didn't recuit well enough rise above mediocre. And this was in the middle of one of the best talent pools in the nation with a school that is highly desirable to recruits and for many their dream school.

I had hoped that in the years between then and now that he had evaluated what happened and made a real commitment that if he got another college HC job that recruiting would become the kind of priority that it needs to be for success. This kind of change of attitude doesn't happen often but as I said KD is an intelligent man and I hoped.

It may still happen but what have we seen so far that indicates that he is moving recruiting to a higher level than it was for him at UCLA.

His team can’t generate success with mediocre players. Selling early playing time and a committed CU culture is what he’ll need to do. Instead, he won’t. Recruiting will suffer not because of results. We don’t have ACs who are closers. Unless we cut the dead weight from the AC staff, our fate is sealed.

Recruiting is sales, period. Recruiting is getting talented kids to commit to spending a few years of their life at your school and being part of your program instead of going to one of the other schools that is trying to get that same commitment.

Before I went into education I was in a sales business. I know that a number of posters on this board are in sales. I'd welcome any of them to tell me and convince me that I am wrong but I'll address this at manhattenbuf because I know he is in the sales end of the auto industry, one of the most sales intensive businesses out there.

The auto companies spend tens of millions, even hundreds of millions of dollars trying to give their models a competitive advantage over the competing companies, they do research and development, they do marketing and advertising, they do training, they put significant money into bonuses and incentives.

With all of this ultimately success often rides with the ability of the retail salesperson to sell the product, to close deal. The people who are the outstanding performers don't rely on their company being the "best" to make sales, they can succeed with what they have. In fact it is not unusual for the outstanding performers to leave a dealership and go down the street and continue to be an outstanding performer with a different dealer and a different product line or lines.

I used to go out of my way to try to hire top performers away from the local car lots because even with a totally different product line (appliances, home electronics) they would usually be top performers for me as well and make me money.

Much of this success was rooted in a sales ethic or mindset. A willingness to work harder, take the extra time and effort to establish the relationship, to determine the customers needs and to satisfy those needs.

I am still waiting to see that mindset from KD and his staff. Without it his time here will be a repeat of his time at UCLA except with lesser results because he doesn't have the same built in advantages here as he did there.
 
It for sure doesn’t help and has the potential to hurt momentum if a recruit reads the boards. Plus, it just frustrates people who actually want to support the staff and give them a chance.
Have you paid attention to recruiting? This staff does not get recruiting. Look at who we are going after. Most kids do not have other P5 offers. We are in the bottom of the Pac-12. Lopez is a dinosaur who does not understand 21st century recruiting. This board is not the reason this staff is going to fail, they are doing that all by themselves
 
You’re right, my bad. I forgot he also sued USC after he broke the terms of the contract he signed. This all sounds like exactly what CU needed.
Knowing what you know about both guys - would you choose Dorrell over Sarkisian if you had the choice?

Yep. I’d rather recruit and win.
He was 34-29 at Washington never winning more than 5 conference games and had a 1-2 bowl record. It’s fine to not like Dorrell (doesn’t seem fair) but let’s not pretend Sark was going to be the program savior.

Never said I was all in on KD. Simply saying give the guy a chance. And let’s not pretend Sark is what makes Alabama’s offense go.

You were asked the direct question of KD vs Sark. Your argument is (somehow) that we should hate Sark’s record in a worse program, but give KD a chance because of his similar program in a better situation.

Sark is recruiting very well and has their offense humming. You’ll need to go back over two decades that a KD directed offense has done anything remotely resembling what Sark is doing today.

When a personal with a medical problem is getting treatment for their issue and has been doing much better in managing their life for several years, I look at their work. Frankly, I prefer a guy who has recruited and coached at a high level recently.

Success at this level is a big deal to me, might not be to you.
 
How many P5 battles did CU win? And against who?

Manhattan, he has shown great discipline and fortitude working on his disease. As well, he has displayed a matured willingness to attend, learn from and grow in the Saban 12-Step Coaches Recovery Program with humility and self-reflection, personally and professionally.

I consider those strengths, not liabilities.
