2021 Offseason Thread

This is not true. 1) The tweet fails to mention that the direct quote listed below says IF all the defensive starters come back. 2) I know it’s false from personal discussions.
The full quote, which got a little messed up in that graphic, makes the IF make more sense.

And the quote in the tweet itself is pretty explicit: “Nate Landman, Mustafa Johnson, Carson Wells, Terrance Lang, all those guys, they’re all back.”

Now, your info may be right, but Dorrell was very explicit.

I just got done listening to the podcast and both Karl Dorrell and Matt both explicitly state that those guys are coming back and there were no ifs. Is it possible that you had this conversation a little bit ago and things might have changed? I suppose it’s possible that Karl could be in for a surprise but he seemed pretty assured with his statements.

I had the conversation a week ago so I texted the individual after seeing this to double check and he confirmed he is still leaving. And my understanding is KD knows but not sure on that one I guess.

Welp, fair enough. Connecting the dots, it seems like the individual in question is either Mustafa or Lang. That’s a bummer either way.

Why leave a year early to not get drafted and be on practice squad?

If he's leaving early, he likely received a mid round draft grade. Another year in which these players are likely to be going through the same ****ty COVID protocols might be reason enough to want to make the jump.

Who besides Sherman getting mid round draft grade?

Just my opinion, but I don’t think Lang or Johnson are mid-round takes. Seem like R6, R7, or UDFAs. If they are mid-round picks then seems like an easy decision go enter draft.

I'm not disagreeing, I'm just saying that I highly doubt anyone is jumping to the draft for a possible 6 or 7 projection.
Mustapha Johnson is not a NT. He is a 34 DE or 43DT. Can play the 3 technique or 5 technique.
I agree he's not a NT, but he's also not an NFL 3-4 DE, at least not one any NFL team is going to spend draft capital on at 6'2".

I’ve heard from a friend that has attended practices and stood next to him that he doesn’t believe Mustafa is 6’. Closer to 5’11” he said. For whatever that is worth.

Something worth considering for players wondering if they should go or stay.

They guys who are likely to go in the first three rounds are usually considered best off to enter if they can be drafted that high. No sense risking injury or a bad year that will drop them when coming back isn't likely to improve them a lot (not common for a third round guy to move up into the first for example.) This isn't changed from most other years.

It isn't that uncommon for guys going in the back half of the draft to significantly raise their stock by staying another season in college. With the grant of an extra year of eligibility it is likely that a lot of guys who would expect to go rounds 4-7 to stay in school for another year.

What this means though is that unless they give another year next season there is going to be a huge logjam of guys looking for spots in the back half of the draft and a lot fewer of those guys this season.

For players who are on the margins of the draft this season may the one that lets them move up into the later rounds and that also has a little less competition for roster spots in the training camps. In other words if you are a guy who is for some reason looked at as a marginal NFL prospect this is probably a good year to go in rather that waiting until next year to take your chance.

I get it, but I'm relishing Dorrell's mojo on this. Everything is competition, everything is earned, nothing is given. Absolutely love what i'm hearing in terms of real motivation for the coaches and players.
