Pac-12 hires MGM's George Kliavkoff to replace Larry Scott as commissioner

I don't think the headquarters matter that much. The PAC will always be California centric (which I think is a good thing for the conference's identity). I think we're all paranoid over the power grab with Texas and the Big 12. Apples and oranges.

I think Phoenix would cause some heartburn with the SoCal schools. Las Vegas doesn’t have a dog in the fight, so to speak. Actually works out better that way. It’s so logical that only the P12 could possibly screw it up.
From my time living in LV, Vegas is LA East, well inside the footprint. UNLV will be at heart of a majority of the population as they are a home town team. But allegiance will be quite uniform across the conference., Arizona, UDub, Utah, SoCal, NoCal maybe are represented a bit more that’d Oregon, WSU and CU.

Vegas makes the most sense, I think most of us can agree.

That being said I don't care where the HQ is, as long as they get out of the office they are in and move somewhere that puts the conference on a more even footing with everyone else. If that is Oakland, Sacramento, Fresno, Bakersfield, etc I do not care.

I'd prefer Vegas, I'd think a lot of opportunity there. Other places you guys have pointed out would work too, hell, they need to do something.

Honestly I have no idea if the PAC 12 employs 5, 50, or 500 people. I just know from a general business perspective, it can be hard to simply move locations by 500 miles without losing a large number of employees. That’s why I would consider Oakland to be a reasonable option, although far from the cheapest one. It’s still a heluva lot cheaper than SF.
Major League Baseball just told the As to move, basically because Oakland sucks so bad.

It would seem that the major drivers of HQ for the power conferences have been central location of the footprint, proximity of an international airport and being in a media/technology/commercial hub.

Few hit it on all factors other than the Big Ten (Chicago suburb near O'Hare).

Being in a high rent district isn't necessarily bad if it's strategically optimal (Big East is on 3rd Ave in Manhattan).

Pac being in SF was logical if you believed in Larry Scott's vision of tech companies and Asian markets being the key. Duff is right to bring up LA because it checks some huge boxes.

I still believe that Las Vegas gets us the closest to having the best of all worlds on these factors, especially in consideration of it being the main convention city in America that brings all industries in on a regular basis. All that and the operating costs are extremely attractive in LV.

What needs to happen/what can the new commish do to get the conference media rights on par with SEC/BIG? Maybe not at the same level because I don’t think that’s realistic for the Pac 12 as currently constructed, but at least at the same level as the other two and in the ball park of those two?

Hell, the actual headquarters wouldn’t even need to actually be in Vegas. They could have them in Henderson and still get all the benefits of proximity to Vegas and probably pay even less in occupancy.
I am rooting for Mesquite...or Primm.

It’s where the conference basketball and football championships are played, it’s the entertainment capital of the US, it’s centrally located in the conference footprint, and it’s probably the cheapest real estate in the entire conference footprint. By far the best location. The conference should claim Vegas as its own and market the **** out of it for the championships, partner with the hotels and casinos, etc
What other conference has their HQ in a state where there isnt a conf member?

What is the significance of having the HQ located in a state with a School in the conference? I'm trying to think of one good reason other than, just because, and can't come up with anything.
The 12 schools are publicly funded state schools except for two. That means politicians In the legislature can interfere. You dont see a potential political problem with exporting 100+ jobs paid with quasi state funds benefitting a non member state?

No, and neither do politicians

That’s even more of a reason not to put it in a state with a college in the conference. Which politician decides which state in the conference gets those jobs?

Also the only power conference that doesn't overlap another and has a big flyover hole in the middle of its footprint.

Besides, if the politician & job thing was an issue as you've assumed then the conference championships and one of its major bowl games wouldn't have all moved to Vegas.

Thanks for conforming. Thats what I thought.
This reply could easily be used in response to your own deflection. You've yet to give any meaningful reason as to why it's important, much less why that reason trumps other considerations, like saved costs (relative to the current setup), centralized location to the conference footprint (you know, something most other conferences do), etc.

Yep. I'm just generally annoyed that it hasn't happened yet. It shouldn't even be up for discussion, but you know, this is the Pac12 and allbuffs, so it is. Hopefully Kliavkoff is all about it.
