2018 College Football News

I was reading about this earlier. Seems much worse than the Tumpkin/Mac deal.

Apparently Meyer was trying to help him find a landing spot this summer, so he wouldn't be forced to fire him.

I am confused on the intern comment. Somehow Zach Smith being an intern somehow insulates him from being removed? Isn't it the opposite? At the very least, a second arrest should have been the final straw.

Of course, the main problem is the nepotism here (Smith is Earl Bruce's grandson).

I am surprised Jeff Long is getting so much praise from the national media after his last couple of years at Arkansas. They keep saying he is good at fund raising but that is probably the easiest part of the job at Arkansas and he completely botched the football program.

He's popular with the media (in particular the four letter) because of his work with the CFP committee IMO-especially on the Tuesday night rankings reveals they did. Personable guy who rarely answered questions in a way that felt like he was trying to tap dance.

Money talks. I don't think that the President, Chancellor and Regents give a single **** what the AD spends as long as it is paying for itself while avoiding academic, criminal & NCAA scandals that would tarnish the university's reputation. If the AD is doing that, it's sending millions of dollars to the university in scholarship tuition dollars each year while also driving easier fundraising for everyone. So the key for the AD is to build the endowment and revenue streams so that it never has to ask the university to write a check to cover it for a mistake in hiring or budgeting or facility construction. Freedom comes from financial independence. RG gets that.

I think the majority of the Regents don't care-we'll always have an idiot like Kroll who will bitch to the Daily Camera about football/athletics spending if he gets a chance. RG is doing the right thing by not talking about additional sports or facility improvements for right now-gotta make sure the FB program is on the right path.

Surprised to see the Canes are only 3pt favorites over LSU week 1 in Arlington. LSU seems like a safe bet to be a baaaad team this year.

I think Maryland at home can keep within 10 of Texas but I also think Texas is going to be good so idk.

Nebraska up to 21pt favorites over Akron, idk about that.

Homer but CU at -6 seems like easy money.

Week 1 is always a little intimidating.

So you're saying you're scared?

The grad transfer of Michigan QB Wilton Speight to UCLA is one of the most curious choices I've seen. What's the chance that he ends up not playing? Seems 50/50 at best. This after winning the job several times at Michigan, which has absolutely struggled on offense since Harbaugh's arrival. I'd give either Modster (dual threat who played some in 2017) or the highly rated Thompson-Robinson from Las Vegas the edge there. I know if I'm Chip Kelly I use year 1 to have my QB of the future get some seasoning.

The biggest surprise to me in all that is that Modster didn't transfer out of UCLA.

Yeah Speight seems like the anti-Chip Kelly QB (based on Chip's college days), plus he wasn't really that good at Michigan.

Speaking of Michigan, I finally got around to finishing the "All or Nothing" series from their 2017 season, and I don't understand how Harbaugh and the Michigan brand can't attract a decent QB. I guess they now have Shea Patterson, but man, that QB room last year was so average with such a low ceiling.

They shouldn't have needed Shea, having 5 four stars commit from 2015-2018 as QBs. Then again, one of those was Dylan McCaffrey. If that was the quality of all their 4 star QB signees, then I get it.

I guess what I don’t understand is why some Buffs fans keep dismissing the UCLA offense out of hand, like it’s a given they are going to suck. That seems like a recipe for disaster.

Well, Chip Kelly's history suggests he looks for a very specific recruit at various positions, and his personality rubs a lot of people the wrong way. It's also known that he and Mora run very different schemes, so making that switch isn't usually the smoothest process. Not to mention, fans don't play the game, so what we think about a particular team's offense is irrelevant to how the team prepares.

Look at their ugly OL situation. Then look at the schedule. That is not a schedule conducive to breaking in a new coaching staff/offense.

Cincinnati
@ Oklahoma
Fresno State
BYE
@ Colorado
Washington
@ California
Arizona
Utah
@ Oregon
@ Arizona State
USC
Stanford

What a lovely time for the Buffs to play them... (n)

I’m fully with ya. I’m just saying, we thought the same things about Mora, what’s his nuts from ASU, etc, and for some reason, as much trouble as they have in year one, the Buffs make them look like COTY.

That game and ASU are going to tell us a lot about the season overall. Buffs need some confidence heading into the tough stretch of the schedule.

We always played Mora pretty well, despite a clear talent advantage for UCLA. Never really played that well against ASU for whatever reason.

I just look at UCLA's roster and that actually seems like a pretty favorable matchup for CU.
