2023 NCAA Tourn. Thread-6 seed//20 ranked WOMEN'S Bball (Sweet 16 game in Seattle vs. 2 seed/ 3 ranked Iowa; Friday, Mar. 24th, 5:30 PM MT; ESPN)

From Iowa 247 site - bulletin board material:

Colorado looks like a team Iowa should beat. 6 of their 8 losses were by double digits in regulation. They also took an L to a Texas Tech team that ISU blew out twice.

Colorado is not a good 3 point shooting team. They have 1 starter above 36%, while Iowa has 4 starters above 38%. They're ranked #196 in made 3s while Iowa is #11. They have a couple tall posts but their starting center looks like a plodder. Czinano struggles more against athletic lanky posts. I think she can get this one in some foul trouble.

I watched the entire game. Colorado missed a lot of easy lay ups. Their 3 point shooting looked so-so. I doubt anyone on the Colorado team will slow down Caitlin very much. Dukes defense looked better than Georgia's. Glad we play Colorado. Granted there is no easy game going forward. But we do match up well with Colorado. Also, a lot of energy was expended by both teams in the overtime win.

Wait, was this the infamous computer simulation?

CC is gonna get hers most likely, she's scores like a mofo, hell of a player. Thing is, and I'm not saying don't pay attention to her, don't let the ladies around her kick your ass too. Try to limit her some and D the **** up on people that aren't supposed to beat you, don't let any of them become the lady Brady Heslip or whatever the hell his name was.
His name was Scott.

Scott's a dick.

We don't talk about that game.

It's a Southpark joke - was used a lot back then for that guy.
Must've missed that one. I wanted to jump through the tv and kill him though. Jam a Acme rocket up his ass and send him to outer space was the only alternative. Unfortunately, I couldn't accomplish that. :D

I have had a hacking chest cough for the last two days. I was hoping that it would pass by now, but it sounds even worse today, so we have decided not to go to the game. I'm bummed.

Hopefully, I can be there for the next game, after they dispatch Iowa tonight.

And no, it's not COVID (as of yet). I have tested twice.

GO BUFFS

I don't have the level of Iowa experience that buffgal does, but I do have an emotional attachment to the state and girls/women's basketball. Grandparents, aunt and uncle, etc., were born and raised in Iowa and I have heard stories about 3 v 3 girls basketball. My grandfather (football), mother and one sister went to college at Grinnell. I was at the Knapp Center for the Georgia game and watched Linda Lappe play a game in the state tourney. Boy does the Girl's state tourney get a lot of attention! Nothing like it in Colorado.

In almost any other circumstance I would be rooting for thee Hawkeyes (or Bulldogs, Cyclones and Panthers.)

The 3 on 3 game was fantastic. At the time I was in high school (I lived in Des Moines), it was only rural schools that played it. It started in the bigger sized schools 3 years after I graduated.

I also was at Drake when we lost to Georgia. Flew back to Iowa when Shelley Sheetz was inducted to the Iowa High School Girls' Basketball Hall of Fame.

I also was back in Iowa for one of the last 3 on 3 tournaments and got to see Lappe play. I believe her team played in the championship game all 4 years she played and won twice, her freshman and sophomore years. Lappe was all state all 4 years.

Sheetz played when consolation games were still played. Her team got 3rd.

Since the fancy new arena in downtown Des Moines opened and the Barn is no longer used for basketball, the entire feel of the state tournament has changed and not for the better. It still has pomp and circumstance and is very entertaining. The best player in the tournament this year played in the smallest school classification like Lappe did. She is going to Iowa State.

My mom played the 3 on 3 game. That's how she and my dad met. We went to girls' basketball games as long as I can remember. We used to go to the state tournament on Wednesday because you would see all of the teams who were going to end up in trophy games play.

I know Sabrina Scott is going to the game. Saw Bri Watts driving in to Seattle. Lappe let Bri sit on the bench for 3 years and never tried to develop her. JR did more for Bri in one season than Lappe did in 3 years. The highlight was that JR has times that different position players have to meet when running the mile. Bri said she could never do it. JR said she could. By the time Bri was in shape enough to make the time, JR ran the entire mile encouraging her and she made the time.

Ceal might have done that in her younger years but I don't see KMM or Lappe doing that with a player.

By that time, Bri's father had passed away suddenly and her mother had been diagnosed with cancer that eventually took her life. Bri had to grow up very fast and she raised her siblings. So proud of that young woman for the way she handled what life threw at her.

Was that the thing where you had 3 defenders on one side of the court and 3 offensive players on the other, and players couldn't cross half-court?

Reading about the old girl's basketball game as it was once played, I found this quote by Bill Self, Sr (father of KU coach Bill Self, Jr) from 1984:

"I'm sure there are a lot of states that think we're still back in the sticks," said Bill Self, an assistant with the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association in charge of basketball. "But people in Oklahoma think it's a better game. They like having a separate game for the girls. To us, the five-player game would simply be a poor version of the boys game. It would be more like a junior high boys game than high school girls."

Granted, this was almost 40 years ago, but wow - cringe factor 3000.

Iowa girls who were relegated to the guard court had to threaten to sue under Title IX to get the 5 player game. For several years, both games were played. The small schools played 3 on 3 and the big schools played 5 on 5.

1993 was the last season the 3 on 3 game was played. Guards did not get scholarship offers for college. Forwards had never played defense and many did not do well in college playing 5 on 5.

Utah just gave it away vs LSU. LSU hit 2 FTs to take a 64-63 lead. Then Utah missed 2 FTs. Pretty rough final 20 seconds. Utah had to foul, LSU made both for a 66-63 lead and then the Utes had to force up a 3 (missed) with 2 seconds from an inbounds. Ouch.

Heck of a first quarter.

Need to keep playing defense like the last half of the quarter. I think it strongly favors Iowa if the scoring is on an over-80 pace. That's the way they want to play.
