2024-25 Coaching Carousel

Utah fans seem to think they are getting Ben Arbuckle from WSU as their new OC and that the WSU QB Mateer is going to follow him.

Wow, so Mike Norvell gets a reprieve?

I think FSU's AD announced about a month ago giving Norvell the reprieve. That could change given the recent blow out losses. Florida has been peaking 2nd half of season. Norvell's buy-out is probably huge. Norvell's build from where he started (Willie Taggart was a disaster) to winning 18 in row is impressive. However, they basically lost every starter and a bunch of the quality 2-deep from the 2023 team to graduation/NFL. He built via TP so they were not very deep. No doubt, his 2-11 run has been bad.

With FSU hiring Malzahn, I'm beginning to wonder if certain teams are positioning themselves for HCing replacements via promoting from within?

Ryan Day appears on thin ice from some, but they have the ready option of promoting Chip Kelly (although he left UCLA not to be a HC), thus they might not lose much. Chip's offense was putrid w/ Mich. However, an early bad loss next season, Day is out with an experienced Kelly taking the interium helm. If they promote from within, programs can avoid the massive roster and AC flip. For Michigan, IMO Sherrone Moore did not seem to be an overly impressive hire, however they kept most of their roster winning 7. 7-5 does not look all that great for MI, but they lost to 3 teams finishing in the Top-10 and 1 in Top-20. Their other loss was to UW in Seattle. By closing out beating @Ohio State yet again, their recruiting/portal fortunes have suddenly gone way up.

There is a zero point zero percent chance that Ohio State would fire Ryan Day and then decide to promote Chip Kelly.

My point was the Chip Kelly type is someone a program can put the "interim" tag on, if Day slips with a bad loss or two early next season. Someone with good HCing experience present to navigate the interim period. If the team responds well, then they have to consider keeping him. Many appear fed up with Day in Columbus, however they will not part with Day before next season given all indicators is they make the playoff and probably host a home game. It would have to be a monumental home blowout for the fire Day chatter to really pick-up.

Uh, the chatter to fire him has already picked up.

Both sides know this will not last long-term, so unless he goes on an incredible playoff run, there is no reason to "run it back" in 2025, especially since the season opens against Texas.

We shall see. I see your point on the Day chatter, however unless Ohio State has someone ready to go Day1 (pun), the program heads into a transition period of sorts. OSU is a plum job with a talented roster.

It appears these days when a program brings in a new coach from the outside, they typically bring OC, DC, and ACs + players with them, and rosters tend to churn. Cignetti has been a great story this season. Jimbo Fisher, Brian Kelly and Lincoln Riley all looked like can't miss hires: Jimbo is already out collecting his AtM buy-out; SC appears stuck with Riley; and Kelly's tenure has been underwhelming by LSU standards. Day is 66-10, with only one 2 loss regular season, this season. Outside of losing to Mich, the only bad loss was perhaps last year's bowl game to Missou and this year Mich again.

Yes, I also think it is a little absurd that Day may get fired, but it seems like both sides would be better off with a change.

Did no one watch the game yesterday? How does Chip Kelly only score 10 with Smith, Egbuka, Tate, Henderson, and Judkins on the field? Tinker less, old man. Jeebus.
Agreed! His stupid unwillingness of test the perimeter of Michigan's defense with the best receving corp in the country was mind-boggling. What a rigid fool. He was a terrible hire and is another has-been, formerly excellent head coach, who needs to move into retirement.

I don't think you can put this loss on Chip Kelly. He has Howard, one of the worst QB to read zone coverage to work with. What does UMich do in the whole game is just simple cover 2/3 and Howard can not make quick/correct read.

OSU has been relying on run game to open up the passing game for the whole year. It's not like they can magically install a bunch of complex passing routes in a minute. As a OC, you have two options left

1. QB run
2. RB run

Both got shut down mostly in the game due to the dominance of the UMich's DL.

If anything, yesterday's game reflected the biggest failure of OSU this season: Howard.

The fact that they have two 5* QBs on their roster and still opted to get Howard in the portal should say something.

On one hand it could mean that those 5* guys suck. On the other hand it could mean tOSU can’t develop a QB.

Walters took over an 8-6 program that played in the CCG and went 4-8 and then 1-11 and was essentially 2022 CU bad.

Purdue needed to cut bait ASAP
The average score of their games was Opponent 40, Purdue 16. Throw out the opening 49-0 win against FCS Indiana State and it was Opponent 44, Purdue 13. 😬

I don't think this is a surprise but Mike Mac canned at FIU.

Last thing on the Ryan Day stuff, below is article on QB mismanagement. Will Howard did not work enough, while jettisoned McCord lit it up for the Cuse.
